Sagamore Hill Trail
Sandwich, MA
This trail climbs a rise in Sandwich, on Cape Cod, where the layers of the past sit one atop another. Long before Europeans arrived, Sagamore Hill served as a council gathering place for the region's Native people โ a "sagamore" being a subordinate chief among the Algonquian nations of the Northeast. Centuries later, during World War II, the same commanding ground was pressed into service as a coastal military installation, part of the chain of defenses that watched the Atlantic shoreline for enemy ships and submarines.
