World War Memorial US Army and Navy & Polish Army
Lower Burrell, PA
This memorial honors the men of the New Kensington area who served in the Great War between 1917 and 1920 — both in the U.S. Army and Navy and, strikingly, in the Polish Army. During World War I, tens of thousands of Polish immigrants and their sons in America volunteered for a "Blue Army" to fight for the liberty of the old country as well as the new, many shipping out even after the 1918 armistice as Poland fought for its restored independence. The twin dates, 1919 and 1920, capture that longer struggle in Eastern Europe.
