Wood River Massacre Memorial
Madison County, IL
On July 10, 1814, during the War of 1812 on the Illinois frontier, several children and young people of the Moore and Reagan families were killed in what became known as the Wood River Massacre, near present-day Madison County. The attack came amid the wider frontier violence that swept the Illinois country as the war entangled settlers and Native nations. This monument names the victims and keeps their story part of the region's early history.
