Jack Lummus

Jack Lummus grew up on an Ellis County farm, starred as an athlete at Baylor, and played professional baseball and football before joining the Marines in World War II. On Iwo Jima in early 1945, he led his rifle platoon against a network of fortified enemy positions, pressing the attack even after being wounded, before a land mine cost him his life. For his extraordinary courage that day he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
