Mt. Tom B-17 Memorial
Holyoke, MA
Late on the night of July 9, 1946, a B-17 Flying Fortress carrying twenty-five servicemen home crashed into the slopes of Mount Tom in poor weather, killing everyone aboard. The men had come through the Second World War only to die on a domestic flight bound for discharge and home. It remains one of the worst air disasters in the region's history, and this memorial marks the mountainside where they were lost.
