The Battle of the Medina
Losoya, TX
On August 18, 1813, Spanish royalist General José Joaquín Arredondo crushed the Republican Army of the North—a mixed force of Anglo-Americans, Mexicans, and Native fighters under José Álvarez de Toledo—in a battle remembered for its ferocity. The defeat ended an early bid to wrest Texas and Mexico from Spanish rule. It remains among the bloodiest battles ever fought on Texas soil.
