Bethany Lutheran Church
Fredericksburg, TX
Fredericksburg's German settlers first worshiped together in the communal Vereins Kirche, but in 1887 the Rev. John Heinzelmann and about 80 families organized their own Evangelical congregation. They built a sanctuary on East Austin Street in 1889 and carried on services in German well into the 1940s, only gradually shifting to English as the community Americanized. Renamed over the decades, the congregation became Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1954.
