The Story
Built in 1874 by Czech-Moravian immigrants, this Brethren church stands near the site where the first Czech Protestant worship service in Texas was held in 1855. It marks the spiritual roots of one of the largest Czech settlements in the American South, where newcomers preserved their faith and language on the Fayette County prairie.

The Rev. Jindrich Juren
Fayetteville, TX
Born in Bohemia in 1850, Jindřich (Henry) Juren studied theology and mastered five languages before immigrating to Texas in 1876 as a newly ordained pastor to Czech-Moravian settlers. Traveling by buggy and train, he ministered to Czech congregations across the state while also teaching public school for four decades. He became a revered leader of Texas's growing Czech community before his burial here in 1921.
Fayetteville Brethren Church Cemetery

Czech-Moravian Brethren settled at Ross Prairie in the early 1850s and, in 1855, held what is remembered as the first Czech worship service in Texas. Their society Osveta founded the state's first Czech-English school in 1871, and in 1874 the Jecmeneks gave land for a church, parish house, school, and this cemetery. Among the graves is that of Reverend Jindrich Juren, who served as pastor and schoolmaster here for some 45 years.
Spacek House
Fayetteville, TX
Built in the late 1800s for the Forres family, this Fayetteville dwelling grew the way many rural Texas homes did—room by room, as fortunes and families expanded. Its German vernacular lines reflect the central Texas communities settled by German-speaking immigrants in the nineteenth century. A 1920s saloon fire next door scorched its south wall, and the house passed down through the family to Minna Spacek, staying in their hands until 1978.
Sarrazin Store
Fayetteville, TX
German immigrant brothers Edward and Leopold Sarrazin opened a mercantile in Fayetteville in 1875 and moved it into this building in 1890. Under one roof they sold groceries, dry goods, and hardware up front, kept feed, wagons, and farm equipment in the rear warehouse, and even raised chickens in the yard to ship to Houston by rail. Passed from Leopold to Edward and on to Edward Jr., the store thrived with as many as eighteen clerks until it finally closed in 1967.
