Boesch House
Whitney, Hill County, Texas

When Whitney town lots were auctioned in 1879, German native Edouard Boesch (1842-1911), an east Texas lumber wholesaler, shipped the first load of lumber for the new town. Three years later he moved here and bought the lumberyard of William Cameron. Boesch became one of Whitney's leading residents and served as a school trustee for fourteen years. In 1885, he and his wife Emma built this two-story residence. Designed to withstand storms such as the tornado that struck the town that year, it was constructed on a foundation of heavy cypress timbers.

The Story
When the new town of Whitney auctioned its lots in 1879, German-born lumber wholesaler Edouard Boesch shipped in the first load of lumber, then moved to town and bought out a rival lumberyard. He became one of Whitney's leading citizens and a long-serving school trustee, and in 1885 he and his wife Emma built this two-story house. Set on heavy cypress timbers, it was deliberately engineered to ride out the storms — like the tornado that struck that very year.

Boesch's story reflects the German immigrants who helped build central Texas towns, and the practical, weather-wise construction that survival on the storm-prone plains demanded.

Bond's Alley
Hillsboro, TX
This narrow Hillsboro passage, named for Bond's Drug Store that opened here in 1881, was the town's informal stage for politics, peddlers, whittling, and the occasional cockfight or fistfight. Its neighbors ranged over the years from a Chinese laundry to an early auto assembly shop. In fair weather people sunned in the alley; in foul, they crowded into the drugstore.
Gebhardt Bakery
Hillsboro, TX
German immigrant Charles Gebhardt opened Hillsboro's first bakery in 1901 and moved it into this handsome brick building when it was finished in 1905, living with his family on the second floor. The structure blends Romanesque and Italianate touches, with arched upper windows, decorative brickwork, and corner turrets. After its baking days, the building housed millinery and barber shops.
West
West, TX
The town of West grew from a stagecoach stop, store, and post office that entrepreneur Thomas M. West established at the Bold Springs Settlement in the late 1860s. The arrival of the Katy Railroad in 1880 and the rise of cotton farming drew a wave of Czech and German immigrants, and by 1910 the community had swelled into a bustling town of some 2,000 people. Its Czech heritage still headlines the annual Westfest.
Groppe Building
West, TX
August Groppe, Sr., one of the first German settlers in the area, had this structure raised in 1892—the very year the town of West was incorporated. A prosperous cotton farmer and businessman, Groppe hired local brickmasons and used bricks made near West to build the first brick building in the town's business district. Over the following century the building housed a succession of enterprises, from dry goods store to grocery to drugstore.
