Douglassville, TX

Douglassville Baptist Church was organized in 1869 by fourteen charter members and two elders, in an era when congregations of every faith often shared a local schoolhouse. Volunteers raised its first frame chapel in 1870; storm-damaged and rebuilt, that building was moved in 1948 to serve as a fellowship hall beside the present church. Though the congregation never counted more than fifty resident members, it sent out a striking number of ministers, teachers, and business leaders across Texas and the nation.

Douglassville, TX

This East Texas burying ground began with land donated by Williamson Petty, a Sulphur River ferryman who settled his claim in 1850. In 1855 Col. John C. Douglass of Georgia bought the rest of Petty's claim, and the growing cemetery took the name of his town, Douglassville. Its earliest legible stone, from 1859, marks the grave of Henrietta Cook and her infant twins, among some 400 burials still tended by a cemetery association.

Southlake, TX

After the 1843 Bird's Fort Treaty between the Republic of Texas and several Native nations opened this land to settlers, families streamed into the Eastern Cross Timbers and by 1846 had organized the Lonesome Dove Baptist Church and school. The village of Dove grew up around a store and post office at the crossing of Dove and Lonesome Dove roads, prospering on cotton, melons, and dairy, with a swimming hole that doubled as a baptismal site. The community endured until the federal government completed Lake Grapevine in 1952 and Southlake annexed the area in 1979.

Mertzon, TX

On January 8, 1865, Confederate troops and Texas militia clashed with a large party of Kickapoo who had entered Texas without authority while making their way toward Mexico. After some five hours of fighting, the Texans withdrew, having suffered 22 killed and 19 wounded. The encounter embittered relations, and later Kickapoo raids on the frontier were traced back to the fight at Dove Creek.

Mertzon vicinity, TX

On January 8, 1865, in the closing weeks of the Civil War, some 2,000 Native people clashed here with Texas Rangers and state troops under Captains John Fossett and S. S. Totten in one of the bloodiest frontier fights of the era. Four officers and twenty-two of their men were left in unmarked graves near the mountain. The battle exposed how the frontier's Indian conflicts raged on even as the great war between the states drew to a close.

San Francisco, CA

You stand on the old Point-Lombard and Greenwich Dock, a San Francisco waterfront berth from the age of sail. Here in the 1850s and '60s the great cargo clipper ships tied up after harrowing voyages around Cape Horn, braving its fearful storms to reach Gold Rush California. These sleek, fast vessels carried the goods and dreamers that transformed a frontier port into a booming city.

Crockett, TX

This ornate Eastlake-Victorian home was begun about 1891 and finished in 1893 for Crockett businessman J. E. Downes, who imported much of its material from out of state. In 1911 it passed to Armistead Albert Aldrich, a civic leader and historian who lived here until his death in 1945. The Aldrich family long remained in the house.

Austin, TX

This ground has been a home for African American athletics for more than a century—donated to Samuel Huston College in 1914 and used for baseball by the late 1920s, including the semi-pro Austin Black Senators of the Negro Leagues. As L.C. Anderson High's football field, it saw a 1942 state championship and the play of future Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick Night Train Lane. Relocated here in 1954, Downs Field was named for Rev. Karl Downs and remains the home field of Huston-Tillotson University.

Waco, TX

Downsville Baptist Church grew out of a Robinson Baptist Church revival, organized in May 1894 by elder A. J. Moore with nineteen founding members and swelling with dozens more that same summer. Neighbors deeded land in 1896, and a sanctuary and schoolhouse rose together—reflecting how rural churches served as both spiritual and educational centers. Generations of added halls and Sunday-school rooms trace a small McLennan County community's endurance.

Jefferson, TX

Built in 1858 and held together with square nails and wooden pegs, the Doyle Bower House is typical of early Texas construction on the eve of the Civil War. Its survival earned it recognition as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966.

Kerrville, TX

The Doyle School opened in 1909 when Kerrville's small African American community pooled $53 to move a discarded frame schoolhouse onto land donated by teacher Anna W. Doyle. Under revered principal B.T. "Prof" Wilson—who named the school for Doyle—it grew from a one-room building with no utilities into a campus with an auditorium, band, choir, and athletic teams. When Kerrville integrated in 1964, its Black students moved into the town's schools, and the building endures today as a community center.

Austin, TX

In 1874, two Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross arrived at the Doyle Farm on the rolling land south of Austin — the seed of what would grow into St. Edward's University. The farm had belonged to James Doyle, an Irish immigrant who reached Texas in 1835, on the eve of its war for independence, and built a life on this frontier ground. When the Catholic teaching order took up the land, a working Texas homestead began its transformation into one of the state's enduring centers of learning.

Doylestown, PA · est. 2003

After the Civil War, thousands of midsize metalworking firms powered America's rise as an industrial giant, and the Doylestown Agricultural Works was one of them. Built in 1867, the factory turned out farm machinery and ironwork that reached markets around the world, and for decades it was the area's largest employer. Its later years traced the industry's consolidation — it briefly passed through General Motors' Sampson Tractor Division before closing in 1937.

Dozier, TX

In the ranch country of northwest Collingsworth County, Dozier Cemetery took its name from Dozier Creek and a cowboy camp at its head. People had lived in this land for thousands of years, and the first Anglo pioneers arrived in the 1860s to farm and run cattle across scattered communities. The graveyard opened in 1893 with the burial of a man named Elam who died of tuberculosis, followed soon by a rancher murdered over a grass-lease dispute, and it later gathered the dead of half a dozen surrounding settlements amid tree rows planted by 1930s WPA crews.

Graham, TX

Dr. John William Gallaher brought his family to the frontier town of Graham in 1884 and built a thriving medical practice while helping lead the community, serving among its first aldermen when Graham incorporated in 1893. After retiring in 1906, he and his wife Belle built this Queen Anne–style home, where Belle hosted club meetings and where the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Club organized in 1911. Its rough-faced concrete block, cross-gabled roof, and diamond-pane windows reflect the tastes of turn-of-the-century small-town Texas.

Texarkana, TX

Ruby Lee Williams, born in Texarkana in 1900, married Jamaican-born dentist Austin Hervin Archibald Jones, a Howard University graduate, in 1928. A decade later Ruby designed this distinctive bungalow—crowned by a cubical tower and decorative brickwork—and had it built by African American craftsmen. The Jones home became a haven for touring Black entertainers barred from segregated hotels, welcoming guests such as Louis Armstrong and Dinah Washington.

In the early 20th century, A. S. W. Rosenbach reigned as the most famous rare-book and manuscript dealer in America, the man great collectors and libraries turned to when they wanted a Shakespeare folio or a founding-era document. With his brother Philip he assembled a personal treasure trove and then gave it a permanent public home as the Rosenbach Museum & Library. The brothers lived on this Philadelphia block for the last quarter century of their lives.

Mineola, TX

Born in North Carolina in 1823, Dr. Adolphus Leander Patten trained as a physician and set out for California in 1854, only to settle in Quitman, Texas, instead. He practiced medicine, took an active role in civic life and Masonic affairs, and served as a surgeon with the 22nd Texas Regiment during the Civil War. In the 1870s he moved his family to Mineola, where he continued caring for patients until his death in 1900.

Matagorda, TX

A Dutch immigrant who reached the United States in 1818 and trained as a physician, Albert Moses Levy threw in his lot with the Texas cause in the mid-1830s. He served as chief surgeon at the Siege of Bexar in late 1835 and later aboard a warship of the fledgling Texas Navy. Afterward he settled in the coastal town of Matagorda, married, and took an active hand in state and local affairs.

Jesup, GA

Born in Ohoopee, Georgia in 1862, Alexander Jackson Gordon floated logs down the Altamaha River to pay for medical school, graduating from the Georgia Medical College at Augusta in 1888. After practicing in Lyons and Waynesville, he settled in Jesup in 1917, buying the local drugstore and joining a boyhood friend's practice. Beyond medicine he served on the city council, helped found two Presbyterian churches, introduced Hereford cattle to Wayne County, and — true to his Hippocratic oath — saw his last patient the day before he died in 1943.

Towanda, PA · est. 2016

In the early twentieth century few women held senior posts in American science, yet Alice Evans built a career as a federal bacteriologist just as germ theory was reshaping public health. Her research traced a dangerous recurring fever in people to bacteria carried in unpasteurized milk, and she spent years pressing a skeptical dairy industry and public toward pasteurization. Her path began here in the Susquehanna Valley, at the collegiate institute where she was educated.

Claude, TX

Dr. William Warner and his wife Phebe married in Claude in 1898 and spent thirty-five years as beloved fixtures of the Texas Panhandle frontier. The doctor rode by buggy to far-flung calls and delivered more than 2,000 babies, many in earthen dug-out homes, while Phebe—the tireless "Little Brown Wren"—founded women's clubs across the Panhandle and worked to better rural life. Together they embodied the civic and medical care that knit isolated frontier communities together.

Waco, TX

Andrew Joseph Armstrong, a Kentucky-born scholar of Robert Browning, and Mary Maxwell, whom he met while both taught English in Rusk, married in 1911 and moved to Waco when he became chair of Baylor's English department. After the poets' son died without a will in 1912 and his estate was auctioned at Sotheby's, Armstrong began a decades-long quest—aided at every step by Mary—to acquire Browning papers and belongings. Their creative fundraising, from educational tours to celebrity campus visits, ultimately raised over a million dollars and opened the Armstrong Browning Library in 1951.

Chester, PA · est. 2019

At the turn of the twentieth century, a woman practicing surgery was a rarity, and prenatal care as we know it barely existed. Dr. Anna E. Broomall, trained at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, opened what is recognized as the first prenatal care clinic in the United States at the Woman's Hospital in Philadelphia. Her advances in obstetric surgery helped lower the toll that childbirth then took on mothers and infants. She spent her career teaching the next generation of women physicians.

Wichita Falls, TX

When Wichita Falls' 1918 oil boom swelled its African American community, Dr. Anne Elizabeth Davis Roark answered the need for professional care, practicing podiatry downtown for nearly six decades after opening her first office in 1923. Remarkably for the Jim Crow era, her practice served white patrons even as she and her husband built Black institutions on the east side — a hotel and coffee shop that doubled as a poll-tax station and waitress-training site, and the Isis Theater that hosted Black artists and welcomed Black servicemen barred from facilities at Sheppard Air Force Base.

Charlotte, NC

In 1885 Annie Alexander became the first woman licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina, opening her office here in Charlotte. She built a respected practice at a time when few women entered the profession, and during World War I she served as an acting assistant surgeon at nearby Camp Greene. Her career opened doors for generations of women in medicine.

Houston, TX

Dr. Bedford Forrest Coop and his second wife, schoolteacher Ethel Reed Coop, came to Houston in 1914 seeking a fresh start and quickly became civic leaders in the Heights. While he built a downtown medical practice, Ethel served on the Houston school board and social service board, taught for the Red Cross, and led the Housewives League during World War I, when future president Herbert Hoover named her a speaker for the national food-conservation campaign. In 1950 an elementary school was named in her honor. Their 1914 Craftsman house, later a boarding house for young teachers and a bed and breakfast, still stands with much of its original character.

Pleasanton, TX

When the FCC lifted its postwar freeze on new radio stations, chiropractor-preacher-rancher Ben Parker and his wife Mona—both veteran broadcasters—helped form a local company that won a permit for Pleasanton station KBOP in 1951, its call letters nodding to the "bop" of emerging rock & roll. Broadcasting first from the Parkers' ranch, KBOP mixed news, country music, and Spanish-language programming that other stations ignored, serving rural South Texas listeners. Mona Parker, who built the tower and transmitter, was the first woman in the United States to earn an FCC first-class engineering license.

Anderson, TX

Born in Virginia in 1799, Dr. Benjamin Briggs Goodrich took part in the 1835 Consultation at San Felipe and, on March 2, 1836, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos. He lived out his life at Anderson, Texas, where he and his wife Serena are memorialized. The state erected the marker over his grave.

Houston, TX

Born on a Falls County farm around 1871, Benjamin Jesse Covington trained at Meharry Medical College and, with his wife Jennie Belle Murphy, moved to Houston in 1903, where he practiced medicine for 58 years and co-founded the Houston Negro Hospital. In an era of rigid segregation, the stately home the couple built in 1911 became the city's unofficial guest quarters for distinguished Black visitors—among them Booker T. Washington and singers Marian Anderson and Roland Hayes. Both Covingtons led civic and medical organizations that served Houston's African American community.

Reading, PA · est. 1951

This was the home of Dr. Bodo Otto, a military surgeon who served the Continental Army from 1775 to 1782. As surgeon-in-chief at Valley Forge during the brutal winter of 1777–78, the aging physician tended troops battling smallpox, exposure, and starvation in the encampment that became a symbol of American endurance.

Palestine, TX

Bonner Frizzell (1882–1968) devoted his life to public education in East Texas, rising from teaching two children algebra at eighteen to leading Palestine's schools as superintendent and business manager for 31 years. A TCU graduate who also studied journalism at Columbia and pursued doctoral work at the University of Texas, he threw himself into civic life through the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and YMCA. His students remembered him for his knowledge, fairness, and kindness, and he championed public schooling until his death.

Clute, TX

Branch Tanner Archer was among the Virginia-born physicians and firebrands who threw their lot in with Texas during its break from Mexico. In 1835 he presided over the Consultation, the provisional assembly that set the colonists on the road to revolution, then sailed east as one of three commissioners sent to win money, arms, and sympathy from the United States. A frontier county still carries his name, a common way early Texas honored the men who argued its independence into being.

Edna, TX

Dr. J. M. Bronaugh, a practicing physician, built this home in 1866 in the town of Texana, framing it from Florida heart pine held together with square nails. When the railroad bypassed Texana in the 1880s, the house was moved to the rising town of Edna in 1883—a common fate for buildings in a frontier region reshaped by the rails. It survives as a tangible link to the earliest Anglo settlement of Jackson County.

Beaumont, TX

Arriving in Beaumont in 1918, the Rev. Dr. Charles F. L. N. Graham—born in British Guiana and educated across the American Midwest—devoted his ministry to the health, recreation, and dignity of the city's Black residents. He founded a church and a community center, and in the racially tense early 1940s helped launch the Beaumont Negro Goodwill Council to ease conflict. He became a U.S. citizen only in 1943, months before his death.

Groom, TX

Charles L. Fields grew up poor, cutting wood to support a mother widowed by the Civil War and working as a carpenter to pay his way through dental school in Chicago. Licensed in 1890, he brought dentistry to the Texas Panhandle, settling at Canadian in 1903 and Groom in 1916. He rode to far-flung ranches and towns with a collapsible chair and foot-powered drill, forded rivers to reach patients, ran his own denture lab, and was often paid in beef or produce.

Amarillo, TX

Dr. Charles Newton Gould, an Ohio-born, Kansas-raised scientist who taught his way into paleontology and geology, became a pioneer of using earth science to hunt for oil and gas. His reading of the Texas Panhandle's rock led him to pick the drilling site for the 1918 Hapgood–Masterson well, opening the enormous Panhandle-Hugoton gas field—the world's greatest known source of helium—and he set the location of the region's first oil well the next year. Gould also identified the Alibates flint quarries as the source of tools made by Ice Age Folsom hunters, a landmark discovery in American archaeology.

East Fallowfield Township, PA · est. 2005

Born in the Quaker village of Ercildoun in Chester County, Charlotte Moore Sitterly became one of the leading physicists of her era. A career researcher with the U.S. Bureau of Standards, she authored more than a hundred books and articles and produced authoritative reference tables on the spectra of the sun and other elements. Honored by the American Astronomical Society in 1937, she became the first woman elected to Britain's Royal Astronomical Society in 1949.

Upper Frederick Township, PA · est. 2023

Dr. Chevalier Jackson, a Pittsburgh native, helped build the modern medical fields of laryngology and bronchology, devising lifesaving techniques to retrieve objects accidentally swallowed or inhaled. His crusade against household poisonings helped bring about the 1927 Federal Caustic Poison Act, one of the nation's early consumer-safety laws. He taught at five Philadelphia medical colleges and, at his home Sunrise Mill, designed many of the specialized instruments that carried his methods forward.

San Antonio, TX

English-born physician C.E.R. King came to America as a boy and served as a Confederate Army surgeon during the Civil War before settling in San Antonio. In 1880 he hired fellow Englishman Alfred Giles, one of the region's most celebrated architects, to design this native-stone Victorian building that housed both his home and his medical office. His descendants lived here until 1929, when the Junior League of San Antonio bought it for use as a tea room and meeting place.

Fort Worth, TX

Completed in 1912 for railroad surgeon Dr. Clay Johnson, this Fort Worth home blends the low horizontal lines of the Prairie School with classical touches like semicircular windows and a rooftop balustrade. Its architects, the local firm of Waller and Field, gave the city an elegant example of early 20th-century residential design. Dr. Johnson, chief surgeon for a Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad line, lived here until his death in 1948.

Wichita Falls, TX

Born in Terrell in 1920, Dr. C.B. Fuller earned his medical degree in 1947 from Meharry Medical College — the South's first medical school for African Americans — and opened a practice in Wichita Falls' east side in 1948. He won admitting privileges at the city-county hospital, where a converted broom closet served as his nursery, and in 1955 became the first African American physician admitted to the Texas Medical Association. He later served on a federal judge's biracial schools committee and was elected to lead the hospital's medical staff.

Philadelphia, PA · est. 2015

Dr. Constantine Hering, a German-born physician, settled in Philadelphia and became the leading figure in American homeopathy during the 19th century. He helped establish the country's first homeopathic medical society and its first homeopathic medical college, and he authored foundational texts still cited in the field. From a home office on this site he pursued the research and teaching that shaped a major alternative medical movement.

Lockhart, TX

Trained in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Alabama-born D. Port Smythe became a pioneering physician in Lockhart. When war came he served as a Confederate surgeon with Texas mounted units across the frontier and the Trans-Mississippi, and the letters he sent home—full of worry over his children's reading, the crops, and the family's debts—read like a portrait of countless Texas Confederates. In later years he taught chemistry at Galveston Medical College and became the first full-time college physician in Texas.

Bonham, TX

Born in Virginia in 1786, Dr. Daniel Rowlett came to Texas in 1836 and quickly became one of the young republic's most active frontiersmen. He engineered the creation of Fannin County in 1837 and served several terms in the Congress of the Republic of Texas. In 1840 he helped organize Constantine Masonic Lodge No. 13 and became its first Worshipful Master.

Waco, TX

North Carolina–born physician David Richard Wallace came to Texas in the 1850s, taught at Baylor University, and served during the Civil War before becoming one of Waco's most prominent doctors and civic leaders. He helped organize state and local medical associations and, as an early pioneer in psychiatry, was chosen to head the state asylums at Austin and Terrell. His career spans the professionalization of medicine—and of mental-health care—in nineteenth-century Texas.

Gladewater, TX

In the boom-era piney woods of East Texas, physician Edgar L. Walker and his wife Nannie put down roots in Gladewater in the 1890s, opening a medical practice and drugstore. Around 1910 they completed this ambitious three-story Neoclassical residence of concrete block, crowned by a two-story Ionic portico and a rooftop widow's walk, and originally meant to double as an infirmary. As oil derricks and storage tanks spread across their land toward the Sabine River, the house became a local landmark—and even surrendered its elevator to a World War II scrap drive.

Port Lavaca, TX

Born near Port Lavaca in 1909, Edward F. Knipling grew up watching the screwworm fly ravage livestock, an experience that shaped his life's work. As a USDA entomologist he pioneered the sterile insect technique—flooding a population with sterilized males to collapse it—a once-controversial idea that eventually wiped the pest out of the United States by 1972. His wartime work on insect control also earned him national and international honors.

Hamlin Township, PA · est. 2016

In the early twentieth century, federal eradication campaigns nearly wiped out the lobo, the great gray wolf of the American West, as cattle country treated it as vermin. A Pennsylvania physician, Edward McCleery, gathered surviving wolves and bred them at a park near here, determined to save the strain from extinction. His enclosure became an unlikely refuge and an education center where scientists and curious visitors could see the vanishing animal up close.

Lockhart, TX

Built in 1899 and dedicated in 1900, this library was funded by a bequest from Dr. Eugene Clark, a New Orleans–born, Tulane- and Vienna-trained specialist who practiced in Lockhart and San Antonio before his early death in 1897. Designed and built by T. S. Hodges in an ornate French Renaissance style, it rose beside the opera house in what was then Lockhart's cultural heart. It endures as one of the oldest purpose-built libraries in Texas.

Boerne, TX

Born in Hesse-Darmstadt in 1820, Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig von Herff came to Texas in 1847 with die vierziger, a band of idealistic young Germans whose Bettina socialist colony soon failed; he returned, married, and settled near San Antonio in 1850. Over more than fifty years he became one of Texas's great pioneer physicians, achieving surgical breakthroughs and helping bring the railroad and St. Mary's Sanitarium to his retreat at Boerne. A Union sympathizer who nonetheless served briefly as a Confederate brigade surgeon, he treated all in need, including Native Americans.

Boerne, TX

A veteran of the Prussian Army from a prominent German family, physician Ferdinand Ludwig Von Herff first reached Texas in 1847 amid the wave of German immigration to the Hill Country. By the 1860s he was a leading San Antonio doctor and civic figure, known across the Southwest for his medical innovations. He and his wife Mathilde owned a ranch here and helped nurture the growth of Boerne, where residents later raised a monument in their honor on a hilltop they loved.

Easton, PA · est. 1993

Born on this Easton ground, biochemist Florence Siebert overcame the lasting effects of childhood polio to build a pioneering scientific career. In the 1920s she developed a method to make intravenous therapy safe by eliminating the fevers caused by contaminated solutions, and in 1934 she refined the tuberculin skin test into a reliable form. Her purified protein derivative became the international standard for detecting tuberculosis.

Dallas, TX

Built about 1924, this Dallas building housed the veterinary practice of Dr. Frank E. Rutherford, who had treated animals in east and south Dallas since roughly 1906. After his death in 1932, his son-in-law finished veterinary school and took over the practice, while Rutherford's widow Nell held the building's title until 1975. Its transom windows, simple parapet, and tile-roofed canopy mark it as a distinctive early-20th-century commercial structure.

Irving, TX

Franklin Monroe Gilbert began as a teacher and principal before earning his medical degree at the University of Texas in Galveston, then returned to Irving to practice alongside his prominent physician father. Over a 59-year career he was not only a doctor but a civic pillar—serving on the school board, as mayor, and as president of Irving State Bank—and his two physician sons carried on the family's medical legacy.

Galveston, TX

Dr. Frederick K. Fisher and his wife Lucy Adelaide built this Victorian stick-style house in 1888, both members of longtime Texas families active in Galveston civic life. Fisher served as a quarantine officer, work that placed his family at the center of the island's public health and the tragedy of the 1900 storm, which killed his brother Walter's family. The couple raised an orphaned nephew here and, after his early death, donated land for a memorial park.

Pacific Grove, CA

This IEEE Milestone plaque in Pacific Grove, California, honors Dr. Gary A. Kildall, who demonstrated the first working prototype of CP/M in 1974. CP/M became one of the earliest widely used operating systems for microcomputers, laying groundwork for the personal computing revolution. Kildall's innovation helped make general-purpose software possible across many different early machines.

Springtown, TX

George and Ruth Jones both came to Springtown in the frontier decades after the Civil War, taught school together, and married in the town's Methodist church in 1891—a building George had helped raise. After medical training in Louisville, Dr. Jones built a flourishing practice, and in 1915 the couple built this American Foursquare house with a Neoclassical porch, its south side serving as the doctor's office.

Fort Worth, TX

Built in 1922 by prominent Black contractor George Powell, this Craftsman house was the home of Dr. George Murry Munchus, the son of formerly enslaved Alabamans who became a physician in Fort Worth. Munchus founded and ran the city's Negro Community Hospital, providing care to a population excluded from segregated white institutions. The handsome two-story frame residence stands as testimony to Black professional and civic achievement in early-twentieth-century Texas.

Austin, TX

George Moffit Patrick joined the Texan cause early, standing among the volunteers at Anahuac in 1832 and serving in the 1835 Consultation before commanding the schooner Flash in 1836. Virginia-born, he later led Texas Freemasonry as grand master and died in Grimes County in 1889.
