Dr. Edward Fred Knipling

Prior to Dr. Knipling’s work, livestock production in North America was plagued by enormous losses each year due to infestations of cochliomyia hominivorax, commonly known as the screwworm fly. Edward F. Knipling was born near Port Lavaca on March 20, 1909. As a young man working the fields and tending the animals, he witnessed the devastating effects of the screwworm fly and other pests. Knipling graduated from Port Lavaca High School at age 17 and became interested in entomology while studying agriculture at Texas A&M University. Harkening back to his observations on the farm, he formulated the vision of the need to manage insects and prevent damage. Edward continued his education at Iowa State University where he met his future wife, Phoebe Rebecca Hall. In 1931, he began work at USDA trapping screwworms, population monitoring and treatments, though he still believed a prevention was needed. Knipling theorized that the introduction of sterile male flies to the population would eradicate the species. This controversial method became known as the sterile insect technique (SIT). During WWII, Knipling’s work was diverted to the military effort. Credited with leading the USDA team that saved millions of lives developing MYL and DDT, Dr. Knipling won the 1947 U.S. Medal of Merit and the 1948 King’s Medal for service from the United Kingdom. After the war, he received his doctorate from Iowa State University and moved to Washington, D.C. to lead USDA entomology research. In 1953, he and his team achieved eradication of the screwworm fly on an island in the Antilles. In 1959, the screwworm fly was eradicated from Florida and, by 1972, the entire U.S. was free from the infestation. Dr. Knipling remained an active researcher and consultant for USDA until his death in 2000.

As a USDA entomologist he pioneered the sterile insect technique—flooding a population with sterilized males to collapse it—a once-controversial idea that eventually wiped the pest out of the United States by 1972. His wartime work on insect control also earned him national and international honors.

Gilbert Onderdonk and Nursery, Texas

Pioneer horticulturist Gilbert Onderdonk (1829–1920) left New York for the warmer Texas coast in 1851 for his health, and after the Civil War built a renowned nursery business in Victoria County. When the railroad reached the area, his family opened a branch nursery in 1883 around which the town of Nursery grew, complete with a post office where Onderdonk served as postmaster and shipping agent for his mail-order trade. He earned a national reputation developing new varieties of peach and other fruit trees.

The Rockport Marine Laboratory began humbly in 1935 aboard a houseboat named Vivian, helping the Texas Game, Fish and Oyster Commission manage the coast's fisheries. A permanent lab with a public aquarium followed in 1947, and after the agency became Texas Parks and Wildlife, the facility anchored long-term research into finfish, shellfish, and other marine life on the Gulf. Its decades of work helped make Texas a national leader in sustainable fisheries management.
Howard Gallemore Hartzog, Sr.
Port Lavaca, TX
Born in Tolosa, Texas, in 1901, Howard G. Hartzog earned degrees from Baylor and George Washington University and even played a season with the New York Giants before returning to practice law in Port Lavaca. Elected state representative in 1933, he spent fourteen years writing bills on education, vehicle safety, and water conservation, then served seventeen years as Calhoun County judge across six terms. His tenure saw the Lavaca Bay Causeway, the Matagorda Ship Channel, a new library, an airport, and hospital expansions as the county boomed in mid-century.
Civil War Torpedo Works
Port Lavaca, TX
In February 1863 local inventor E. G. Singer tested a torpedo with a novel spring-action ignition system on the shores of Lavaca Bay. With partner Dr. J. R. Fretwell, Captain David A. Bradbury, and other Lavaca citizens, Singer won Confederate authority to manufacture underwater and land mines at an experimental works here. His devices were installed in rivers across the South, from Mississippi's Yazoo to Alabama's Mobile Bay, and helped defend the Matagorda Bay area throughout 1863.
