Victoria, TX

On May 15, 1852, a small band of eight men and women—among them an enslaved person—organized the First Baptist Church of Victoria on the Texas coastal plain. In its early years the congregation shared a Methodist meeting house and later built a frame sanctuary above an Odd Fellows lodge hall. A steeple bell recovered after a storm scattered the port town of Indianola has followed the congregation through each new building since 1878.

Waco, TX

Organized in 1851 by the Rev. Noah Byars and a small band of charter members, this congregation first borrowed the Methodist meetinghouse before building its own sanctuary in 1857. Fire, growth, and time brought successive buildings, culminating in the present house of worship raised in 1907. The church became deeply entwined with Baylor University after the school moved to Waco in 1886, with every Baylor president since keeping membership here, and it counted among its leaders B.H. Carroll, founder of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Waxahachie, TX

In 1861, as the Civil War opened, a dozen Waxahachie residents gathered in the town's Methodist church to organize a Baptist congregation and call W.H. Stokes as their first pastor. For two decades the young fellowship met wherever it could until raising its first building in 1882, then rebuilt across the generations, dedicating the present sanctuary in 1959. For well over a century the church anchored its Rogers Street corner before relocating in 2019.

Weslaco, TX

Just two years after Weslaco was founded, visiting Southern Baptist evangelists helped area believers organize this congregation in 1921, meeting first in the Stephen F. Austin School. Its members were often the very civic leaders building the young Rio Grande Valley town. Over the decades the church leaned into mission work — overseas medical service, a well-baby clinic, and the founding of four Spanish-speaking congregations in Weslaco.

West, TX

Founded in 1858 in the pioneer settlement of Bold Springs under postmaster-farmer Alberto Vaughn and 32 charter members, this Baptist congregation first worshiped in a frame building south of the settlement. When a rail line reached the growing town of West in 1882, the fellowship moved to the corner of Spruce and Pine, building its first sanctuary there in 1899. After fire destroyed that structure in 1938, the present sanctuary rose in its place.

Wharton, TX

Baptist worship in this corner of the Colorado River bottoms may reach back to about 1822, in the home of "Old 300" colonist William Kincheloe, one of Stephen F. Austin's original settlers. A Sunday school followed around 1829-1830, and a formal congregation was organized by 1847, becoming a founding member of the Colorado Baptist association that year. Known since 1913 as the First Baptist Church of Wharton, the fellowship built its first sanctuary in the late 1850s.

White Deer, TX

Baptists in the young Panhandle town of White Deer first worshipped in the Presbyterians' building before organizing their own missionary church in June 1912 with missionaries of the Palo Duro Association. Funded by gifts and the sale of wheat and cotton crops, the congregation dedicated a Mission Revival–style brick sanctuary in 1921 and paid off its debt within five years. The building sheltered residents during a deadly 1951 tornado and later served as a school cafeteria and education building, remaining a hub of community life.

White Settlement, TX

Six charter members founded this congregation in 1868 as New Prospect Baptist Church, gathering in a one-room log cabin that doubled as Grant's School and a community hall. A permanent sanctuary followed in 1905, and after a 1946 lightning fire the congregation rebuilt again by 1953. The wartime arrival of Consolidated Aircraft and Carswell Air Force Base swelled the surrounding population and, with it, the church's reach.

Whitehouse, TX

As Anglo settlers pushed into Smith County in the 1840s and gathered around a white-painted schoolhouse, a Baptist congregation took root in 1869 as the New Hope Church of Christ, Baptist. Early members worshipped once a month, built a one-room sanctuary in a pine grove in 1887, and followed the town as the railroad drew the community to a new center. Through relocations and rebuildings the congregation endured, taking the name First Baptist Church and becoming a fixture of Whitehouse life for well over a century.

Wichita Falls, TX

Founded in 1883 with just eight charter members meeting in a log schoolhouse, this Baptist congregation grew alongside the young North Texas town of Wichita Falls. The classically styled sanctuary seen today—the congregation's third home—was begun in 1919 and finished two years later, a permanent statement of a frontier church that had put down deep roots. It was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1982.

Wills Point, TX

Founded in 1873 with the physician Dr. J. L. Matthews as its first pastor, this congregation erected a building in 1876 that a tornado is said to have destroyed the same year. Undaunted, the church grew, broadened its educational programs, and became a charter member of the Van Zandt Baptist Association in 1905. Over the years it sent out several of its own members as missionaries and pastors.

Winnsboro, TX

Organized in 1872 as the Providence Baptist Church during the Reconstruction years, this Wood County congregation took the name First Baptist in 1880 and built a brick sanctuary here in 1904. In 1907 it hosted memorable services led by the Rev. Dr. George W. Truett, one of the most prominent Baptist preachers of his generation. The congregation expanded through the twentieth century while sustaining a long tradition of local and foreign mission work.

Winona, TX

Founded in 1849 as Harris Creek Baptist Church by Pastor William H. Ray and fifteen charter members, this East Texas congregation met in members' homes before raising a pine-log meetinghouse in 1850. Its cemetery, begun in 1858, held both white and—in a separate section—African American members, who belonged to the church until Emancipation. Surviving a cyclone, relocations, and repeated name changes, it became the First Baptist Church of Winona in 1947.

Wylie, TX

This Baptist congregation reaches back before 1870 to the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Nickleville, whose members met in private homes. When the settlement folded into the new railroad town of Wylie around 1887, the church took the town's name, and in 1905 it bought this site and built a sanctuary. Steady growth brought a full-time pastor by 1914, and the congregation has carried the First Baptist name since 1942.

Yoakum, TX

Yoakum sprang up in 1887 when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad pushed through, and the First Baptist Church organized on April 7, 1889 — a month before the town itself incorporated. Seven charter members began under the Rev. H. M. Rowland, worshipping first in a one-room frame building before a brick sanctuary with six stained-glass windows rose in 1912. The congregation has long carried on local and foreign mission work.

Zephyr, TX

In the Central Texas ranching country of Brown County, twelve settlers gathered in John J. Driskill's home in 1886 to organize a Baptist congregation. They raised their first sanctuary in 1892, rebuilt after a devastating 1909 tornado, and held frontier revivals under the Zephyr Gospel tabernacle. More than a century later, descendants of those charter families still fill the pews.

Malakoff, TX

In 1894 the Rev. Monroe F. Jackson arrived in Malakoff and founded a congregation he named Good Hope Baptist Church, with trustees acquiring land at this site the same year. Over the decades the fellowship helped seed several other churches across western Henderson County, including Antioch and Macedonia. After a 1939 merger with Mt. Olive Baptist Church, the congregation took its present name.

Bryan, TX

A member's letter dated November 1866 captured the hopeful founding of this Baptist congregation in the raw years just after the Civil War. Its first house of worship, one block west, was a two-story frame building that had been a bowling alley and saloon, where the earliest pews were planks laid across kegs. The present 1927 sanctuary is the seventh house of worship in the church's history and the third built on this site.

Lewisville, TX

Organized in 1883 at the Willow Springs School as Big Valley Baptist Church, this frontier congregation grew alongside the schools and Sabbath schools that anchored rural Denton County life. Over the decades it merged with a neighboring fellowship, moved to the new town of Hebron in the early 1900s, and completed its first sanctuary in 1920. Known today as First Baptist Church, Hebron, it has sent forth several ministers and remained a pillar of community leadership.

Sabinal, TX

First Baptist Church has served Sabinal since 1899, when eight charter members organized the Sabinal Missionary Baptist Church and worshipped once a month in borrowed halls. The congregation built its first sanctuary in 1905 and moved several times as it grew, all while supporting missions—including a local Spanish-speaking mission and a later church in nearby Concan—and charitable work at home and abroad.

Nephi, UT

This marker records the site remembered as the birthplace of baseball in Utah, in the frontier town of Nephi. As the national pastime swept across the country in the decades after the Civil War, even remote Great Basin communities took up the game, weaving a distinctly American sport into pioneer life.

Stinnett, TX

In the closing months of the Civil War, thousands of Comanche and Kiowa warriors — allied with the Confederacy — clashed with a Federal column of some 372 men led by the famed scout Col. Kit Carson near the ruins of an old trading post on the Canadian River. Though Carson mounted what he called the greatest fight of his career, the vastly outnumbered soldiers were forced to withdraw, making this one of the largest Indian engagements of the war. A decade later, some of the same warriors would face buffalo hunters at the 1874 Battle of Adobe Walls, a fight that helped open the Panhandle to settlement.

Bay City, TX

Freedpeople in Matagorda County began gathering to worship the moment emancipation reached Texas in 1865, meeting in homes, under trees, and in a local schoolhouse before raising their own sanctuary in 1896. The land was sold for five dollars by Odo and Fatuma Van, both born in Africa before being captured and sold into slavery, and the congregation took its name from Berea, an early Christian community named in scripture. For more than a century the church doubled as school, assembly hall, and the heart of the Vann Settlement.

Burnside, KY

Two years before the Boy Scouts of America was chartered, a schoolteacher named Myra Greeno Bass gathered fifteen boys in the Cumberland River town of Burnside, Kentucky, in the spring of 1908 and began leading them on hikes and camping trips. Working from the official handbook of the British scouting movement that Robert Baden-Powell had launched only a year earlier, she taught woodcraft and outdoor skills that would look entirely familiar to a scout today. Her group called itself the Eagle Troop, and it predated the national American organization that would soon sweep up boys across the country.

Philadelphia, PA

On Christmas Day 1723, a small band of German immigrants gathered at the water's edge in Germantown and performed the first American baptisms of the Church of the Brethren, a pietist movement born in Schwarzenau, Germany, in 1708. Fleeing religious persecution in the Old World, these settlers had found in Pennsylvania the freedom to practice their faith — including their signature rite of full-immersion adult baptism. That winter service planted one of the earliest peace-church congregations in the American colonies.

Matagorda, TX

Benjamin and Esther Wightman, Connecticut natives who had lived in New York's Herkimer County, followed their son Elias to Texas in 1828, arriving aboard "Little Zoe," the first sailing vessel to enter the port of Matagorda. Elias held the grant to the Matagorda town league under the Republic of Mexico, and his parents' graves became the first burials in the town cemetery.

Springfield, IL

When John Kelley raised his cabin here in the spring of 1819, central Illinois was still raw frontier, only a year out from statehood. That single dwelling became the nucleus of a settlement that would organize Sangamon County, seating its first commission and court in April 1821 on this very ground. Within a generation the little prairie crossroads grew into Springfield, the future state capital.

Baird, TX

The first Callahan County jail was built in 1878 at Belle Plaine, the original county seat. When a contested election shifted the seat to Baird, that town's citizens paid to have the jail moved there in 1883. Recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark, it survives as a relic of the county-seat rivalries that shaped young West Texas communities.

Johnstown, PA · est. 1997

In 1873, workers at a Johnstown tannery gathered in a loft to form a congregation of their own, part of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church that had grown out of Black Americans' determination to worship free of discrimination. Organized formally the next year, the church soon moved to this site. When the catastrophic Johnstown Flood tore through the valley in 1889, the building was swept from its foundation, yet the congregation rebuilt and endured.

Austin, TX

When Austin was chosen as the seat of the Republic of Texas, its first capitol rose on this site in 1839. Every president of the Republic conducted some official business within its walls during the brief, precarious years of Texas independence. The modest building embodied the ambitions of a frontier nation governing itself.

Whitehall, PA · est. 1947

At Coplay in 1871, David O. Saylor produced the first portland cement made in the United States, freeing American builders from reliance on imported European product. Less than two decades later, in November 1889, the same locale saw the first commercial use of the rotary kiln — a breakthrough that let cement be manufactured continuously and at scale. These innovations turned the Lehigh Valley into the heart of the young nation's cement industry.

Amarillo, TX

This cemetery sits on the old LX Ranch, the first ranch in Potter County, founded in 1877 by two Boston industrialists and later sold to a British cattle syndicate. Its graves read like a chronicle of the open range: a bookkeeper's wife who died in Tascosa in 1887, ranch children, and cowboys killed by falling horses, quicksand, and hard weather. After the syndicate was liquidated, a former employee tended the plots for decades until a descendant of the ranch took up the care.

Roma, TX

Around 1840, in the borderland community of Roma along the Rio Grande, residents built a small chapel with volunteer labor on donated land and from contributed materials. For more than a decade before the Oblate Fathers arrived in 1853 to build a proper church, this humble structure served the faithful — some 500 people received the sacraments here from visiting secular priests who lived across the river in Mier, Mexico.

Santa Clara, CA

California had barely become a state when its settlers began founding institutions of higher learning, and in 1851 the California Wesleyan College was chartered here — the first chartered college in the young state. Established by Methodists in the Santa Clara Valley, it grew into what is today the University of the Pacific, a lineage stretching back to the very dawn of American California. This plaque marks the original ground where that ambition first took root.

Eastland, TX

First Christian Church organized in Eastland in 1878 under the Rev. Cyrus Scarborough, counting several town founders among its early members. It moved from the county courthouse to its own facilities in 1886 and built on this site in 1907. Over more than a century it built a reputation for ecumenical cooperation and community service, from a park constructed in an African American neighborhood during segregation to food pantries, a jail ministry, and holiday drives.

Albany, TX

In December 1886 evangelist J.P. Pinkerton gathered 26 people from 19 families to found this congregation, which first met in the Shackelford County Courthouse. A $50 gift bought land for a one-room frame church completed in 1889, and by 1921 the growing congregation dedicated a larger building with a fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms. A church of the Disciples of Christ, it has worshiped in Albany for well over a century.

Sulphur Springs, TX

In the 1850s, Disciples of Christ in the pioneer town of Bright Star — better known as Sulphur Springs — worshipped in neighbors' homes and a vacant store before traveling evangelists formally organized this congregation in 1870. In a mark of frontier practicality, the young fellowship once shared a former Methodist sanctuary with the Baptists, the two flocks worshipping on alternate Sundays. As the town grew, so did the church, raising a Gothic frame building, then a brick sanctuary in 1914, and a modern one in 1962.

Pecos, TX

Faith took root in the West Texas railroad town of Pecos through a Sunday school begun in a hotel in 1881, blossoming a decade later into the town's first organized church. Led at first by a pharmacist acting as lay leader and revived by two women's Ladies Aid Society after it briefly disbanded, the congregation raised its first sanctuary on donated land in 1899. The handsome brick edifice completed in 1909—the oldest brick church in Pecos—still anchors a community that grew alongside the railroad and the cattle trade.

Palo Pinto, TX

Palo Pinto's oldest church building serves a congregation believed to be the first of any faith to worship here, organized in 1857 in the home of lay preacher Dr. Stephen S. Taylor. Members raised the sanctuary in 1882–83, and despite storm damage that same year it has stayed in continuous use — sometimes lending its walls to other faiths in their infancy. Among its early pastors were Addison and Randolph Clark, founders of what became Texas Christian University.

Van Alstyne, TX

This congregation descends from the first Disciples of Christ church in Texas, gathered in the winter of 1841–42 near the Arkansas border under Collin McKinney, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The group migrated west to the settlement of Mantua, where an 1854 meetinghouse divided men from women by a center aisle and members bound their own hymnals. When the railroad created Van Alstyne, the church moved here, merging the old and new congregations by 1891.

Knox City, TX

Organized in 1907 under board chairman Sam Anderson, this congregation first met in the local schoolhouse until its own church was built in 1909, with W. C. Wright called as its first minister. It stands as the oldest church building in Knox City still in continuous use. The little sanctuary reflects the founding of civic and religious life in a young West Texas town.

Crowell, TX

Organized in 1906, the First Christian Church was among the earliest congregations in the young Foard County town of Crowell, its first officers a roster of the community's founding families. The building site was donated by a local settler and chosen by three members of the fledgling congregation. The original church building served continuously for 61 years, anchoring the town's religious life.

Snyder, TX

Eight founding families gathered in 1898 to organize this congregation on the West Texas plains, building their first sanctuary on land donated by A. C. Wilmeth beside Deep Creek—where worshippers sometimes had to wade the swollen water after a rain. The distinctive octagonal building earned the affectionate nickname "Little Round Church." Growth forced a move in 1909, and after oil transformed Snyder's fortunes the congregation doubled by 1950, raising its present church in 1953.

Mason, TX

Organized in 1875 with M. E. Gibson as its first minister, this Mason congregation soon bought land and raised a sturdy sanctuary of native sandstone, built by local contractor August Brockmann and dedicated in 1879. A classical revival porch, designed by a Philadelphia architect, was added in 1926. The building reflects the craftsmanship and permanence that settlers brought to their frontier town.

Palestine, TX

Organized in 1847, this East Texas congregation was led in part by lawyer Joseph A. Clark — later the founder of the college that became Texas Christian University — and farmer John F. Taylor, both followers of the Campbell-Scott movement for Christian unity. Sixteen charter members of differing faiths bound themselves together with shared "Articles of Faith," and the church committed itself to evangelism from the start, planting congregations across the region even as the Civil War briefly interrupted the work. Four sanctuaries later, it was still serving Palestine by 1955.

Arlington, TX

First Christian Church grew from a small band of believers gathered by the Rev. William H. Wright in young Arlington in 1882, formally organized as a Disciples of Christ congregation in 1890. Three of its members helped found Arlington College in 1895—the institution that became the University of Texas at Arlington—beginning a bond with the school that endures today. Over its first century the church built successively larger sanctuaries and grew into one of the city's leading institutions.

Pettus, TX

Built in 1905, this was the first church to serve Protestants in the small South Texas town of Pettus. At the request of land donor Mrs. S. B. Hodges it was called a Christian Church, and contributions came from across denominations; the following year it was formally organized as a Disciples of Christ congregation of twenty-five members. For years Baptists, Methodists and Disciples shared its Sunday School, and its tall white spire became the town's landmark.

Kingsville, TX

Organized in 1911 by charter members drawn largely from the workforce of Kingsville's brand-new railroad, this Disciples of Christ congregation raised its first building on community donations in 1913. The present sanctuary dates to a 1955 project, and across the decades the church endured the bitter 1922 railroad strike, two world wars and the Great Depression. Its language school, women's groups and food programs extended its reach well beyond Sunday worship.

Kerrville, TX

In the early 1880s a small band of pioneer Kerrville women raised the money to build a union church, completing a modest sanctuary in 1885 that several denominations shared for years. Through the efforts of two local leaders, the Christian (Disciples of Christ) congregation gained sole ownership of the building in 1925. Its members went on to build a lasting record of outreach and missionary work in the Hill Country.

Lockhart, TX

This Disciples of Christ congregation organized in 1852 with just seven members and built its first sanctuary in 1858, only to outgrow it as the town of Lockhart swelled. In 1898 local architect Tom Hodges, known for several of the town's public buildings, designed the present Gothic Revival church with its lancet windows, decorative brickwork, and corner turrets. It has anchored the community for well over a century.

Smithville, TX

This Disciples of Christ congregation took shape in Smithville in the mid-1890s, worshiping first in an opera house and then in a shared Presbyterian building before raising its own church in 1903. Two brothers built it — one from this fellowship and one from the Presbyterian congregation — a small sign of how frontier towns pooled their talents. Its bell tower and stained-glass transoms still mark it as a fixture of the young railroad town.

Gatesville, TX

Gatesville's First Christian Church took shape in the 1880s and organized formally in 1892, building this Greek Revival sanctuary with arched windows and a steeply pitched roof. The congregation worshiped here until it disbanded in 1972, after which other groups used the building. In 1990 it was deeded to the Coryell County Museum.

Anna, TX

This congregation's roots reach to Liberty Christian Church, founded in 1846 by pioneer Collin County settlers Collin McKinney and J. B. Wilmeth and counted among the earliest Christian churches in Texas. When the Houston and Texas Central Railroad bypassed the community of Mantua in 1872, the town declined and its congregation split toward the new rail towns of Van Alstyne and Anna. Former Mantua members helped organize First Christian Church of Anna in 1882, worshipping in the Sherley home until it burned, then building a sanctuary here around 1890.

Aubrey, TX

The Disciples of Christ in this area first worshipped alongside other denominations under a brush arbor and in a schoolhouse in the Spring Hill community before establishing their own Christian church in Aubrey in October 1894. A frame sanctuary served the congregation until a tornado leveled it in 1918, after which members quickly rebuilt while sustaining their missions and charitable work. An early emphasis on Bible schools fueled rapid growth and set the congregation's long course of worship and outreach.

Bay City, TX

When the Bay City Town Company laid out its townsite on Bay Prairie in 1894, churches, businesses, and schools followed the arriving families. In 1904 trustees bought lots for the first permanent home of the First Christian Church of Bay City, which served as sanctuary and social center until a 1909 hurricane destroyed it. The congregation rebuilt, relocated a chapel from Old Gulf in 1939, and grew through the mid-century, raising a larger sanctuary in 1960.

Beaumont, TX

First Christian Church of Beaumont traces its roots to 1894 revival meetings led by Dallas evangelist A. J. Bush, and by 1899 the congregation worshiped in a relocated former Episcopal building. Growth carried it through new sanctuaries in 1904 and 1962, and the church helped plant several other Beaumont congregations. Over the decades it built a youth camp and launched programs feeding the elderly and aiding the needy through its 'Some Other Place' outreach.

Big Spring, TX

In 1882, the very year Howard County was organized, seven charter members founded this Disciples of Christ congregation, first gathering in the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Eddins under the Rev. J. Wright. As Big Spring grew from a raw West Texas railroad town into an established community, the church built and rebuilt its sanctuaries, from a small frame building on Gregg Street to later homes on Scurry and this site. For more than a century it remained a steady spiritual anchor for the town.

Bonham, TX

English-born Charles Carlton, educated in West Virginia under Alexander Campbell of the Disciples of Christ movement, settled in Bonham in 1867 and soon founded Carlton College. In May 1868 he organized the First Christian Church with 27 charter members, who worshiped in a frame building raised in 1878 on a lot bought from Col. Jack R. Russell. The present classical revival sanctuary followed in 1912.

Brenham, TX

Growing out of the missionary work of A. J. Bush and W. J. Jones, this congregation organized with 18 members in 1877 and counted many prominent Washington County settlers among its early ranks. The fellowship worshiped in various places until its sanctuary was finished in 1898. Built by noted local craftsman Alex Griffin, the Gothic Revival church features round-arched and lancet windows and an elaborate tower.

Bryan, TX

Organized in 1866, just after the Civil War, the First Christian Church took root in the young town of Bryan, holding early meetings in businesses and homes before raising a red-brick sanctuary in 1868. Fire destroyed the church and its records in 1925, and the congregation rebuilt again, later relocating to Ennis Street as Bryan and College Station boomed with military personnel during and after World War II. As one of Bryan's earliest religious organizations, it has continued a long tradition of community service.
