Carthage, TX

Born out of gospel meetings in the late 1880s, the First Christian Church of Carthage received a lot from Hamilton Pollard in 1890 and completed its first building the next year, often relying on lay members and visiting preachers when it had no settled minister. The East Texas oil and gas boom of 1943 swelled its ranks and paid for a new sanctuary in 1947. The congregation's fortunes rose and fell with the resources beneath Panola County's soil.

Center, TX

Formed in 1856, First Christian Church of Center is among the oldest congregations in Shelby County, gathered by a group of founding families who first worshipped in a house in the Pleasant Grove community. The church erected its first building in 1886 and called its first pastor in 1893 after years of lay leadership. Its present sanctuary, built in 1905, was moved to this site in 1930, and its fellowship still counts descendants of the original charter members.

Commerce, TX

Families of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) began settling around Commerce in the 1850s and worshiping together, first in a local schoolhouse and later in a shared Union Church on Live Oak Street. The congregation formally organized in November 1890 during a revival, bought this property in 1891, and finished its first church building in 1893. Its history traces the slow gathering of a frontier faith community into a settled congregation.

Crockett, TX

Members gathered for about two years before formally organizing this congregation in 1901 under the Rev. Harry Hamilton. A wooden sanctuary built that year served until 1949, when a larger brick church replaced it, and a fellowship hall followed in 1960. Membership dipped in the mid-1970s, when ministerial students led worship, then rebounded so strongly that a new fellowship hall was built by the end of the decade.

Denton, TX

Established in 1868 under Elder Terrell Jasper, this Denton congregation first gathered in the local Masonic Hall before raising a frame church in 1876 and receiving a state charter in 1902. A brick building followed at Hickory and Piner streets, the first of three structures the church would occupy there. Its current home on Fulton Street, completed in 1959, was designed by the celebrated Texas modernist architect O'Neil Ford.

Detroit, TX

This congregation was organized in 1901 by the Rev. A. H. Darnell, just as the railroad settlement of Bennett Station was becoming the town of Detroit. Under Darnell's leadership the members raised this sanctuary the next year, framing it from lumber cut in nearby mills. Its carpenter Gothic design—lancet windows and a corner tower entry—typifies the modest but graceful churches of small East Texas towns.

Duncanville, TX

In the young farm town of Duncanville, informal 1890s gatherings led by a visiting Lancaster minister grew into a formal congregation of seventeen charter members in 1893. Robert and Frances Daniel anchored the effort, funding the first sanctuary in 1913 and, in Frances's case, deeding the very land beneath it. The church weathered a devastating 1917 fire and a bank failure that swallowed its rebuilding funds, yet pressed on to complete a new sanctuary by 1919.

El Paso, TX

In the booming border town of 1880s El Paso, a Pennsylvania blacksmith named Philip Miner gathered thirteen charter members to found this Disciples of Christ congregation, refusing any pay for his preaching. Since coming to Texas in 1849 he had devoted himself to planting churches and public schools, and he continued that work on the far western frontier. From rented rooms in south El Paso the fellowship built successive sanctuaries and helped seed other congregations as the desert city grew.

Fort Worth, TX

First Christian Church was organized in 1855 by the Rev. A. M. Dean, a frontier farmer-preacher who, legend has it, came to the rowdy young settlement on the Trinity carrying both a hymn book and a revolver. Early services were held in a log house and a concrete building that also hosted Fort Worth's first public school, run by Col. John Peter Smith. Later ministers included the Rev. Joseph Clark, whose sons founded Add-Ran College in 1873—the forerunner of Texas Christian University—making this the oldest church in Fort Worth.

Frankfort, KY

Founded in December 1832 by the noted minister-educator Philip S. Fall, this congregation belonged to the Restoration Movement whose champion, Alexander Campbell, preached from its pulpit. After fire destroyed the church in 1870, philanthropist Emily T. Tubman funded a new building, part of which survives in the sanctuary completed in 1924.

Garland, TX

As the village of Duck Creek took shape in 1858, four denominations shared the local schoolhouse, and in 1875 the Rev. W. B. Cole organized First Christian Church with 21 charter members. The community's fortunes shifted when the Santa Fe railroad missed Duck Creek by a mile in 1884, spawning the rival town of Embree; the two merged in 1891 to become Garland. The congregation built its own house of worship in 1886, moved it to this site, and grew steadily into a thousand-member church by 2000.

Granbury, TX

This congregation took shape in the 1870s with the help of Addison and Randolph Clark, whose father Joseph A. Clark founded the Add-Ran Male and Female College nearby at Thorp Spring in 1873. That school would grow into Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The Clark brothers served as the church's first pastors, and the men of the fellowship raised a frame sanctuary in 1889.

Grapeland, TX

This congregation took shape around 1870 in the community of Red House, a spot where an Indian village had earlier stood, before following the railroad to the new town of Grapeland in 1872. Like many frontier congregations it first gathered in the local schoolhouse, then raised its own sanctuary in 1895 — a building still in continuous use, expanded in 1947 with a dining room and educational wing.

Howe, TX

When the Houston and Texas Central Railroad pushed through the old Peters Colony settlement of Summit in the early 1870s, a new town rose around the tracks and took the name of a railroad official. In 1872, the same year the town was established, a handful of families gathered to organize a Disciples of Christ congregation, worshiping first in homes and schoolhouses before buying this lot in 1893 and raising a Victorian-influenced frame sanctuary. It was one of four Protestant churches built in Howe during those years, and it served the community until declining membership led the congregation to disband in 1982 and give the building to the town.

Huntsville, TX

This Disciples of Christ congregation was gathered in January 1854 by Joseph Addison Clark, who with his brother Randolph would later found Texas Christian University. A dozen members first met in private homes and even in the Walker County Courthouse before settling into their own buildings. Over more than a century its rolls included figures like Dr. Joseph Baldwin, a president of the school that became Sam Houston State.

Johnson City, TX

Organized in 1903 by traveling evangelist the Rev. Tom Smith and twenty-six charter members, this congregation built its first sanctuary in 1905–06 on land given by Judge N. T. Stubbs, relying in its early years on itinerant ministers. Among its members was young Lyndon B. Johnson, who joined in 1923 at age fourteen after his baptism in the Pedernales River.

Kaufman, TX

Organized in 1861 under the guidance of R. A. Hindman — who also founded Kaufman's first newspaper — this Disciples of Christ congregation worshipped in members' homes before buying its first sanctuary from the local Presbyterians in 1877. Over the next century the church weathered a destructive 1961 fire and, resourcefully, moved surplus military barracks up from Dallas's Love Field to build a new home. The story mirrors the improvised, make-do spirit of small-town Texas congregations across generations.

Lancaster, TX

On July 5, 1846—the very year Texas joined the Union—Roderick Rawlins and thirteen settlers gathered to found this Disciples of Christ fellowship, meeting in homes and a one-room log schoolhouse. For years traveling preachers served the little congregation, which regrouped after the disruptions of the Civil War and reorganized in 1880. Fire claimed its first church house in 1918, but the congregation rebuilt and endures as one of the oldest of its kind in continuous service in Texas.

Llano, TX

This Llano congregation began worshiping together around 1882, meeting first in a two-room schoolhouse and then the county courthouse before settling on this site in 1888. In the frontier fashion of the Texas Hill Country, early converts were baptized in the Llano River. The congregation took the name First Christian Church in 1910 and expanded its 1888 sanctuary over the following century.

Longview, TX

Twelve charter members organized this congregation in 1875, meeting first in a schoolhouse before building a frame sanctuary on land deeded by the Texas & Pacific Railroad — a reminder of how the railroads seeded churches and civic life in East Texas towns. James P. Holloway, a prominent local landowner, served as the first pastor. Successive buildings in 1906 and 1936 mark a congregation that grew steadily alongside Longview itself.

Lufkin, TX

When a rail line from Houston to Shreveport bypassed the old county seat of Homer around 1884, the new town of Lufkin sprang up at the depot—and many of Homer's residents, church members among them, simply moved. The Lufkin Christian Church was formally organized in 1894 and worshiped in halls and a converted schoolhouse before building homes of its own, growing alongside the town for more than a century.

Luling, TX

The congregation grew from the initiative of Eula Nichols, who moved to Luling in 1891 to attend school and persuaded Rev. A.J. Bush to hold a revival there in 1892. Out of that meeting First Christian Church was organized under resident minister Rev. G.S. Kimberly, worshiping for decades in the lower level of a local Masonic lodge. A 1947 sanctuary burned and was rebuilt in 1979 as the church carried on its youth and outreach work.

McGregor, TX

Four families gathered in the 1870s at Comanche Springs to form a Christian congregation, then followed opportunity to the new railroad town of McGregor in 1883, building a church on Main Street the next year. When the wider Christian movement split over doctrine near the turn of the century, one group kept the property and became the First Christian Church of McGregor. A larger sanctuary rose on the same site in 1907, and the congregation remains active more than a century later.

McKinney, TX

On April 1, 1848, about twenty worshippers gathered at the Wilmeth home, then traveled to the new county seat of McKinney determined that its first institution be a church, organizing the First Christian Church on the future courthouse square. They met at first in an unfinished barn and the log courthouse, led by lay preachers who had studied under Alexander Campbell, a founder of the Christian Church. Despite frontier hardship and the upheaval of the Civil War, the fellowship endured, calling its first full-time pastor in 1872 and raising successive church buildings over the following century.

Midland, TX

Chartered in 1890 by sixteen members who first met in private homes, the First Christian Church of Midland took root as the frontier town itself was still forming. Charter member S. E. Townsend's early pledge helped fund the first of its downtown buildings, and the congregation grew steadily into a large new home by 1950. More than a century on, it continues its tradition of community outreach.

Orange, TX

The First Christian Church of Orange traces its roots to 1885, when a handful of residents began gathering for worship and some charter members were baptized in the waters of the Sabine River. The congregation formally organized under the Rev. J.C. Mason in 1894 and built its first sanctuary the next year. After decades of growth it relocated to its present site in 1954, remaining active in charitable and ecumenical work.

Palmer, TX

This congregation traces its roots to an 1853 church near Rockett and Brushy Creek whose members helped plant new churches across the area. When Robert "Uncle Bob" Smith and his wife Lavisa moved to Palmer in 1868, they helped organize the First Christian Church there, first meeting in a one-room schoolhouse and later sharing a community "union" sanctuary with the Baptist and Presbyterian congregations, each taking its assigned Sunday. The congregation built its own home in 1898 and moved to the present brick church in 1940, still ringing a bell salvaged from the old union building.

Paradise, TX

In the late 1880s this congregation began with home worship services in the original Paradise townsite, but the arrival of the Rock Island Railroad drew residents to a new location nearer the tracks, and the church followed. Merchant, school superintendent, and farmer among its early trustees bought land and built the Gothic Revival church about 1905, its steeple still holding the original bell. Membership once dwindled to as few as three, yet services never ceased.

Plano, TX

The First Christian Church of Plano grew from land settled by Kentucky natives William and Ruth Forman, who came to Texas in 1846 and whose family ties led to a congregation founded on the Barnett farm in the mid-1850s. A small frame building first served as both school and church, lit by coal oil lamps with a single table for pulpit and communion, before larger sanctuaries rose in town over the following decades. Through what members called its 1899–1949 "Golden Age" of growth, the church became a lasting fixture of community life in Plano.

Rockdale, TX

Organized in 1887, this Rockdale congregation was first led by the Rev. A. J. Bush, Sr., a Civil War veteran who helped plant Christian churches across Texas. Generations of members worshiped on this site, raising a new brick sanctuary largely with their own hands in 1958. The church's long record of local and foreign mission work made it a fixture of the Rockdale community.

San Marcos, TX

This San Marcos congregation began in 1853 with just two members and grew quickly through the antebellum years before lapsing during the Civil War, when a visiting Austin minister revived it. Its 1893 sanctuary, designed by architect Edward Northcraft on land donated by banker Edwin Green, still stands; a revival in 1895 and a new sanctuary in 1910 marked its continued growth.

Santa Anna, TX

A congregation gathered in Santa Anna in 1894 and, after years of borrowing space, built its own frame sanctuary on this lot at the turn of the century. Dedicated in 1901, the church still shows its origins in a brass bell in the entry tower, original beaded ceilings and wainscoting, and a vestibule lamp once fueled by kerosene. Its survival marks the steady settlement of West Texas in the decades after the frontier gave way to farms and small towns.

Seymour, TX

Twelve charter members organized this congregation in March 1880, worshipping first in the Baylor County Courthouse and later in a modest rock building. Cooperating with the Masonic Lodge, they raised a two-story building in 1884 before erecting the present Gothic Revival sanctuary of local stone in 1906–1907. The church's growth mirrors the settling of the West Texas plains.

Taylor, TX

Founded in December 1877 by twenty-two members newly arrived from their "old home" states, this congregation grew quickly after Gen. R. M. Gano preached a week of daily services. Meeting first in an Odd Fellows hall and then a modest 1878 building, the church raised its present Gothic Revival sanctuary in 1891, designed by architect E. B. Mackin.

Terrell, TX

Organized in 1876 with fewer than two dozen charter members, the First Christian Church of Terrell met in borrowed rooms before building its first sanctuary here in 1881. Explosive growth—membership rose tenfold in less than twenty years—drove a succession of ever-grander buildings, from a steepled, stained-glass structure in 1895 to the brick sanctuary dedicated in 1923. Its expanding facilities trace the prosperity of a growing North Texas railroad town.

Tyler, TX

The Disciples of Christ first put down roots in Tyler by 1859, raising a red-brick sanctuary just before the Civil War scattered the fellowship in 1861. For two decades only a small Bible school kept the flame, until a state evangelist's 1889 revival in the Albertson Opera House organized a fresh congregation that met in a tabernacle on West Erwin Street. From that second founding the church grew steadily — new sanctuaries, a Sunday school, a women's missionary auxiliary — and sent out a notable number of ministers and missionaries.

Weslaco, TX

When the Weslaco Townsite Company platted the new town in 1919, it offered lots to Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, and Christian congregations, who at first shared a community house and rotated Sundays. First Christian Church organized formally on December 16, 1921, with 44 charter members and has remained on its original site ever since. Its members later helped lead a federation of church women that established a local well-baby clinic.

Weston, TX

The First Christian Church of Weston was organized in 1900 by Dr. and Mrs. Moses Hubbard and their neighbors in the community of Roseland, west of Weston. Its first building, raised that same year, was shared by Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist worshippers alike before the Christian congregation moved to Weston in 1914 on land donated by Sam Dorsey. Under Rev. Douglas Darnell the church grew, adding a tabernacle in the 1920s, and it remains part of community life.

Wills Point, TX

Founded in 1882, this congregation first met in the town's Presbyterian church and baptized its members in a cotton-gin pond north of town before erecting its own building in 1886 and adding the town's first baptistry in 1891—offered freely to other area churches. A parsonage was bought on Pecan Street in the 1920s, and over the years the church became a training ground for many student pastors from Texas Christian University.

Canadian, TX

Bought in 1890 for the old Presbyterian Church, this was the first church bell in Canadian, Texas, and it was shared by several faiths in the young Panhandle town. The congregation held suppers and other fundraisers to pay off the bank loan taken out to buy it. Later moved to a new Presbyterian church, the bell was still ringing when the marker was placed in 1967.

Junction, TX

On the West Texas frontier of 1881, the celebrated circuit rider Andrew Jackson Potter organized this Methodist congregation, part of his lifelong work planting churches across a raw and thinly settled country. For years the faithful gathered in a schoolhouse or under a brush arbor near Copperas Creek before neighbors hauled lumber by wagon from Menard and donated their own labor to raise a church here in 1917.

Austin, TX

On September 15, 1883, the University of Texas held its very first classes in the Temporary Capitol on this site, and 52 of the 218 original students enrolled in the new Law department. They studied under two towering figures of Texas jurisprudence: former governor Oran M. Roberts and former state supreme court justice Robert S. Gould. Graduates of that first class went on to notable careers, including Albert Sidney Burleson, later U.S. Postmaster General.

Lincoln, CA

This marker commemorates the founding of Gladding, McBean & Co. and the erection here of the first clay sewer-pipe plant west of the Rocky Mountains, after high-grade clay deposits were discovered nearby in the nineteenth century. Founded by Charles Gladding, Peter McGill McBean, and George Chambers, the works grew into one of the West's great terra-cotta and ceramics manufacturers, and the town of Lincoln rose around it.

Austin, TX

In the years surrounding emancipation, Austin's African American Baptists moved from worshiping as enslaved members of a white congregation toward a church of their own. Under the Rev. Jacob Fontaine, a Black preacher and community leader, the congregation was formally organized in 1867 with thirteen charter members, holding early services in a blacksmith shop and a church basement before the city deeded land for its first sanctuary in 1869. For more than a century it has been a cornerstone of Black religious and civic life in the city.

Comanche, TX

When Comanche County organized in 1856, this modest dwelling in the little town of Cora did double duty as its first courthouse. Once Comanche won the county seat in 1859, the building simply reverted to being a home. It was later moved and restored.

Mason, TX

On February 5, 1847, in the Texas Hill Country, a band of Penateka Comanches under Chief Ketumusua approached the camp of German immigrant surveyors led by John O. Meusebach, agent for the Adelsverein colonization society. Rather than fight, the two parties shared gifts and a meal and agreed to talk further. That first encounter opened the way to a formal peace council weeks later—a rare voluntary agreement to share territory that both sides largely honored.

Garden City, TX

On November 9, 1925, wildcatter Fred Hyer's well 'No. 1 H.R. Clay' struck oil at 1,508 feet on land many had dismissed as worthless. The strike touched off a rush of speculators and drillers into West Texas and helped open the Permian Basin, one of the richest oil regions in the state. Howard County alone has since produced more than 300 million barrels.

Sangamon County, IL

During the 1930s, as automobiles reshaped rural Illinois, civic groups took up the cause of beautifying the new highways. This roadside planting, finished in 1934 along the road to New Salem State Park, was among the state's first comprehensive efforts to line a route with trees. It was sponsored by the Women's Horner Clubs of Sangamon County, a nod to how women's civic organizations shaped the era's public landscape.

Cooke County, TX

Massachusetts-born Daniel Montague came to Texas in 1836 and took up the dangerous work of surveying the Fannin Land District, helping settlers stake claims while defending against raids. He joined the 1843 Snively Expedition against Mexican traders in the Republic's disputed borderlands and captained a company in the Mexican War of 1846. When Cooke County was organized in 1848 he became its first surveyor, and like fellow surveyor John H. Reagan he was honored with a county bearing his name.

Tyler, TX

At a time of failing crops and depressed farm prices, Smith County became the birthplace of the county agricultural agent. In a historic meeting on November 12, 1906, Dr. Seaman A. Knapp of the U.S. Department of Agriculture joined County Judge S. A. Lindsey and dozens of local leaders to appoint William C. Stallings the first county agent in Texas—and the first in the nation to serve a single county. Building on Knapp's earlier farm-demonstration work, this step helped launch what became the worldwide Cooperative Extension Service.

Castroville, TX

Built in 1854 of native limestone with walls eighteen inches thick, this was the first permanent courthouse of Medina County, whose seat was then at Castroville along the old road to San Antonio. Mason Joseph Burger raised it to replace the temporary quarters the county court had used for six years. After the seat moved to Hondo, the sturdy building served as a school and now houses City Hall.

Wichita Falls, TX

The first Anglo-American settlers reached Wichita County in 1856, but frontier conflict with Native peoples—for whom the county was named—delayed its formal organization until 1882. That year residents finally seated a full slate of officials, from Judge James S. Akers and Attorney Robert E. Huff down to the inspector of hides and animals. The roster captures the moment a raw frontier district became a functioning county.

Shelbyville, TX

Founded before 1825 and first called Nashville, this settlement became the original seat of what is now Shelby County, its first courthouse standing on this spot. In the 1840s it became a flashpoint of the notorious Regulator-Moderator War, one of the bloodiest vigilante feuds in early Texas. The same ground later mustered troops for frontier defense, the Texas army, and, decades on, Confederate service.

Junction, TX

Kimble County's first court convened in the spring of 1876 in the open air beneath a live oak whose trunk held a hive of wild bees. Judge W. A. Blackburn rode in from Burnet to sit on a log bench, the jury perched on two more logs, and a gnarled oak limb served as his gavel—while prisoners awaiting trial were chained to nearby trees. Texas Rangers stood guard and gave testimony, most of the cases turning on horse theft in a notoriously lawless era.

Junction, TX

This site marks where, in 1876, one of the first court hearings in newly organized Kimble County was held in the open, presided over by Judge W. A. Blackburn. Texas Rangers stood guard, and in the rough frontier fashion of the day the proceedings were conducted with a tree pressed into service in place of a courthouse. It is a vivid image of law arriving in the Hill Country before its institutions were fully built.

Burkeville, TX

Newton County was organized in 1846, but its seat of justice took two more years to settle. In 1848 residents raised a courthouse here by public subscription on land donated by John R. Burke, whose name the surrounding town of Burkeville adopted. Burkeville served as county seat until Newton claimed the honor in 1853.

Austin, TX

The First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Austin was organized in 1853 by missionary Rev. E.B. Crisman, meeting first in a frame building downtown before raising a stone structure in 1892. A bitter dispute over a denominational merger reached the Texas Supreme Court in 1906 and cost the Cumberland members their building, but through elder R.M. Castleman they bought it back eight years later. Around 1950 they built a new sanctuary and, in 2003, marked 150 years of continuous worship.

Nelsonville, TX

This marker traces the roots of Czech settlement in Texas, beginning with a lone customs officer in 1829 Galveston and swelling into the organized migrations of the 1850s. Letters home from the Rev. Josef Arnest Bergman, a Czech settler at nearby Cat Spring, drew whole family parties across the Atlantic — the Silars, Lesikars, Mareses and others whose names filled the ship logs. Guided by Bergman's counsel, many took up farming in Austin County, and the community grew heavier in the 1870s, eventually spreading Czech language, festivals, and culture across the state.

Cotulla, TX

For years the scarcity of water held back settlement in La Salle County, as wells and windmills alike came up dry. In 1910, town founder Joseph Cotulla struck artesian water at this site from 2,200 feet down, supplying his household, livestock and irrigated fields in abundance. His success prompted the city of Cotulla to drill its own wells, fueling civic growth; the original well flowed for 52 years before being capped in 1962.

Denver, CO

This corner marks the site of Denver's first Chamber of Commerce building, raised in 1884 as the mining-and-railroad boomtown was maturing into a regional commercial capital. Its early quarters reflected the ambitions of a city determined to organize its rapid growth.
