Mt. Calm, TX

This Baptist congregation grew out of the older Mt. Antioch Church in 1878, gathered under the Rev. Dr. J. J. Riddle. When the St. Louis and Southwestern Railroad reached the area in 1884, the church followed the town to its new trackside site — a common pattern as Texas communities reorganized around the rails. It weathered a 1940 fire and a 1949 merger with its declining parent church before the present building rose in 1954.

Murphy, TX

In 1900, twelve years after Murphy's founding, local resident Mrs. May Cockrell gathered friends in her home to organize a Baptist congregation the growing community lacked. Among those present were a visiting Plano preacher and a newspaperman from the Plano Star-Courier. That same year Mrs. Louisa Brown donated land at this site for the sanctuary, and the church has served the community ever since.

Nacogdoches, TX

When the railroad reached Nacogdoches in 1883, the Baptist General Association sent missionary Luther Rice Scruggs to organize a church, and by 1885 he and thirteen charter members had done so. The congregation raised successive sanctuaries—one designed by noted local architect Diedrich Rulfs—as it grew with the town, and it planted several daughter churches over the decades. Members long shaped community life, from closing saloons to supporting a Baptist ministry at Stephen F. Austin University from 1923 onward.

Navasota, TX

Six men founded this church in the spring of 1860, one of the first congregations of any faith in the young railroad town of Navasota. The Houston & Texas Central Railway donated the site, and a native-stone sanctuary — planned by the pastor's wife, Mrs. A. E. Baten — was completed in 1890. That 1890 building survived fire and still stands after restoration in 1971.

Nederland, TX

This congregation grew out of a Baptist revival held in Nederland's Dutch Reformed Church, reflecting the town's Dutch immigrant origins, and seven charter members organized the church in March 1907 under the Rev. George Montgomery. In its early years new members were baptized in the Neches River. Known until 1925 as the Peveto Baptist Church for a devoted early member, it grew steadily into a pillar of community service.

Newton, TX

This East Texas congregation traces its roots to 1861, when the Newton Baptist Church—about thirty-five members strong—joined the Bethlehem Association and baptized converts in the waters of Caney Creek. It built its first sanctuary around 1882, took the name First Baptist Church in 1915, and has worshiped at its present site since 1949. For more than a century and a half it has been woven into the religious life of Newton County.

Nixon, TX

This congregation traces its roots to 1869, when Baptist missionaries organized a church in the vanished village of Rancho, a settlement that predated the railroad town of Nixon. When the San Antonio and Gulf Railroad drew the community to a new townsite in 1906–07, the church moved with its people and took the town's name. Through revivals, aid societies, and a long tie to the Alto Frio encampment, it grew into a fixture of small-town life in Gonzales County.

Nocona, TX

Organized in the summer of 1889 by Rev. J.W. Holman and thirteen charter members, this North Texas congregation first gathered in a local schoolhouse with Rev. S.E. West as its first pastor. It completed a sanctuary in 1897, took the name First Baptist Church in 1903, and replaced the older building with a new one in 1927. Over the decades it planted another church in Nocona and supported missionary work abroad.

Oglesby, TX

The First Baptist Church of Oglesby grew out of an 1893 revival and was formally organized in September 1896, calling J.M.B. Gresham as its first pastor. For its early decades the congregation gathered only once or twice a month, weathering the loss of its first building to fire in 1913 before rebuilding the following year. Missionary outreach and community involvement have long marked its life.

Olton, TX

In 1903, missionary Rev. J.W. Winn gathered settlers at a farmhouse northeast of the future town of Olton and organized the first Missionary Baptist church in Lamb County. For years members met in homes and, from 1908, in a shared union building used by several denominations. Under Rev. G.I. Britain the Baptists built their own sanctuary in 1923, and the congregation swiftly grew as the surrounding plains community took root.

Orange, TX

Organized in 1879 with eighteen charter members meeting in the frame Orange County courthouse, this congregation grew through the fellowship of missionary preachers and the gift of land from local families. Adopting the name Green Avenue Baptist Church in 1898, it merged with another congregation in 1909 to become the First Baptist Church of Orange, dedicating its brick sanctuary by 1915. Over the decades it helped plant a constellation of daughter churches across the region.

Ovilla, TX

Residents around Ovilla organized a Baptist church in September 1903, worshiping at first in a wooden tabernacle shared with other congregations near Red Oak Creek. The Rev. Bob Burleson became the first full-time pastor in 1922, and in 1936 the members finally built a sanctuary of their own on this site. More than a century on, the congregation still anchors the community through worship and outreach.

Palacios, TX

Founded in 1905 by the Rev. William H. Travis, First Baptist Church of Palacios began as both a school and a Missionary Baptist congregation in the young 'City by the Sea.' The next year the Texas Baptist Convention made Palacios its annual Training Union Encampment site, drawing missionaries and teachers to the coastal town each summer. From homes and the encampment tabernacle the congregation moved into its own 1909 sanctuary and, decades later, to its present campus.

Palestine, TX

Organized in 1851, just five years after Palestine became the Anderson County seat, this Baptist congregation first worshiped in a shared chapel before building its own sanctuary in 1853 and hosting the state convention in 1854. A dramatic 1879 revival led by Major William Penn fueled a new building funded by nickel contributions, earning it the nickname the Avenue "Nickel" Baptist Church. Fire, rebuilding, and relocation carried the fellowship into the twentieth century.

Palmer, TX

Founded on November 17, 1873, at a meeting led by the Rev. T.H. Durham, this Missionary Baptist congregation first met in members' homes before sharing a Union Church with three other denominations by 1891. Its present frame sanctuary was built in 1900-1901 and enlarged over the years, and five of its members went on to be ordained. The church reflects the steady growth of faith communities in settling North Texas.

Palo Pinto, TX

Soon after the town of Golconda—later Palo Pinto—was founded in 1857, frontier missionary and cattleman George Webb Slaughter gathered a Baptist congregation there. A charter member of the Brazos River Baptist Association, it counted dozens of new members in its first year while enduring drought, hardship, and conflict with Native peoples on the open frontier. Merging with Slaughter Valley Baptist Church, the congregation settled at this site in 1886 and worships on still.

Panhandle, TX

First Baptist Church has served the town of Panhandle—first called Carson City—since the late 1800s, organized in 1897 and reorganized in 1905 as settlers filled the Texas Panhandle. The congregation grew rapidly during the 1920s oil boom, then weathered crushing debt, the Great Depression, and the Dust Bowl as neighbors moved away to boomtowns like Borger. Members rallied to pay off their building in 1940 and rebuilt again after a 1997 fire, sustaining a long tradition of charity and missions.

Paris, TX

The Rev. Willis M. Pickett and six charter members organized the Union Baptist Church of Paris in 1854, and it grew into First Baptist Church. Among its pastors was the Rev. Robert Cooke Buckner, whose concern for orphans while at Paris grew into the wide-reaching Buckner Baptist Benevolences. The congregation lost its 1895 building to the great Paris fire of 1916 but rebuilt and continued a long record of local and foreign mission work.

Pecos, TX

The Rev. Sumner Battle Callaway—a former Georgia lawyer and gubernatorial secretary turned minister—organized this Baptist congregation in 1885 with eight charter members and served as its first pastor. A first building went up in 1887, replaced by a larger sanctuary in 1910, as the church moved through a succession of West Texas Baptist associations. Among its later ministers was L. R. Millican, who preached across the frontier for more than fifty years.

Pharr, TX

First Baptist Church of Pharr began with seven charter members in 1913, worshiping in a school building until a sanctuary rose in 1916 on land set aside by the Pharr Townsite Company. The congregation organized a Sunday school, youth group, and missionary society, and helped establish two local Hispanic churches. A new sanctuary was built in 1994.

Plainview, TX

Founded in 1890 with just eleven charter members, this West Texas congregation grew in lockstep with the town around it. When the Santa Fe Railroad reached Plainview in 1907 and the first irrigation well tapped the water beneath the plains, both church and community boomed. The congregation raised its Classical Revival sanctuary in 1927, its twin porticos and cast-stone cornice a sign of hard-won permanence on the High Plains.

Plano, TX

Established in 1852 as the Spring Creek Baptist Church on land owned by Jacob Routh, this congregation formally organized in 1853 and helped form the Elm Fork Baptist Association a year later. When the railroad reached Plano in 1872, the church took the town's name and built a new sanctuary here, becoming First Baptist around 1936 as the oldest Baptist congregation in Plano. Over the decades it helped plant several other area churches and sustained wide-ranging mission work.

Pleasanton, TX

In December 1866, just after the Civil War, seven charter members organized a Baptist congregation in the young South Texas town of Pleasanton, worshiping wherever they could — the courthouse, a schoolhouse, and the Rock Schoolhouse — before local benefactors donated land and the first sanctuary rose in 1883. Over the following century the church grew through new buildings, a 1966 centennial, and recovery from a 1972 fire, eventually folding the very Old Rock Schoolhouse where it began back into its grounds. It is a portrait of how a frontier faith community anchored and outlasted the town around it.

Port Lavaca, TX

This congregation grew out of missionary work that began in the 1830s and was organized in 1854 as the Lavaca Baptist Church, led by Elder J.M.B. Haynie and a handful of deacons. Through the hardships of the Civil War, coastal hurricanes, and a yellow fever epidemic, the Baptists kept up their worship, and the state chartered the body as the First Baptist Church of Port Lavaca in 1913. The church helped found other area congregations and played an active role in the town's growth.

Port Neches, TX

First Baptist Church of Port Neches began in October 1910 when twelve charter members gathered for services in a one-room schoolhouse. Over the following decades the congregation built and rebuilt its home—a 1917 frame church, a 1927 brick sanctuary lost to fire in 1940, and finally a new campus on Magnolia Avenue—while sustaining Sunday school, youth programs, and mission work. Through fire and relocation, the church remained a spiritual and social anchor for this Gulf Coast town.

Poteet, TX

Settlers around Gallinas first worshiped in one another's homes before gathering at a Borrego Creek log building that served as both school and church. In June 1856 ten members organized Shiloh Baptist Church, credited to seminary student William Dycks Johnson; decades later, in 1913, Shiloh merged with Gates Valley Baptist and moved the building to Poteet, dividing its sanctuary into rooms with hanging quilts. Renamed First Baptist Church of Poteet, it grew through the 20th century and planted new congregations.

Poynor, TX

Poynor sprang up in 1901 when the Texas & New Orleans Railroad reached this corner of Henderson County, and worship followed quickly — seven residents gathered in August 1904 to organize a Missionary Baptist congregation. Under Elder W.W. Hall and clerk James P. Thrasher, the church grew from monthly preaching to a fixture of town life, its ranks later swelled by families who stayed when a nearby gas plant opened. Generations of members served as teachers, mayors, and postmistresses.

Quitman, TX

Organized on November 16, 1850 by pioneer settlers in a meeting moderated by a Cumberland Presbyterian minister, this was one of the earliest churches in Wood County. Early worship happened in homes and open air before shared frame buildings rose with the Masons, and its 1855 bell is preserved as a relic. The church counts among its own James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas, and once welcomed the renowned Dallas preacher George W. Truett to its pulpit.

Raymondville, TX

Rooted in a shared two-story home on 7th Street in 1907, this Baptist congregation formally organized in 1914 and raised its first wooden sanctuary on this South Texas site. Through the 1920s and beyond it built out Sunday School, a Training Union, and a Woman's Missionary Union, and it deliberately planted missions in 1927, 1936, and 1938 to serve the area's Hispanic and African American residents. A new sanctuary opened in 1949, and a Sunday radio ministry followed in 1959.

Dallas, TX

When a handful of Renner Baptists organized in 1890, they had no building of their own and worshipped in the local schoolhouse for eight years. In 1897 the congregation bought this lot and raised a church, replacing it with a sturdier structure in 1925. As the surrounding countryside around Dallas urbanized, the fellowship followed its community, relocating in 1979 and taking the name Preston Highlands Baptist Church.

Rice, TX

This congregation organized in February 1875, just a few years after a rail line reached the area and drew settlers to what became the town of Rice. Early worshippers gathered in the community schoolhouse before building a sanctuary in 1894 on land acquired from an organization founded by railroad magnate William Marsh Rice, the town's namesake. For well over a century the church has remained a fixture of local life.

Richardson, TX

Founded in 1865 as Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with nineteen charter members, this congregation first met in the Elm Grove Schoolhouse before pioneer William Huffhines donated two acres for a sanctuary. In 1885 the members voted to move five miles north to the new railroad town of Richardson, where a succession of sanctuaries rose and fell to storms over the decades. The church took its present name in 1954.

Rochester, TX

Thirteen charter members organized a Baptist congregation in 1899 in the little community of Marcy, calling their first minister the following year. When the railroad pushed through nearby Rochester in 1906, the congregation picked up and moved to follow it—holding its first service at the new town that October and thriving there. A succession of buildings, culminating in a 1957 sanctuary, marks its long life at the heart of the community.

Rockdale, TX

Rockdale grew up around a railroad camp in 1873, and the following year the Rev. B. B. Baxter gathered 18 charter members into a Baptist congregation that first met in a room above a dry-goods store. A simple sanctuary went up in 1881, replaced by a new building in 1919 as the church grew with the town. A Latin American mission begun in the 1950s later became its own Southern Baptist congregation.

Rockport, TX

Founded in 1873 with L. D. Young as its first pastor, the First Baptist Church of Rockport began on South Church Street in the young coastal town. When the great hurricane of 1919 destroyed its building, members rebuilt the following year at Live Oak and Main, and joined the town's Methodists and Episcopalians in an ecumenical Sunday School. The congregation has served Rockport through worship, education, and outreach ever since.

Rocksprings, TX

Organized by a handful of believers in 1893, this Baptist congregation took root in the earliest days of Rocksprings and weathered the same trials as the town around it. When the 1927 tornado flattened much of the community, Texans arrived from far and wide to help rebuild both the town and the church. Through Depression and wartime the congregation grew, even sponsoring a Mexican American mission that became its own Sunday school.

Rockwall, TX

Organized in 1852 in the home of J. C. Williams by Elders John R. Briscoe and M. Glover, this congregation began as New Hope Baptist Church—Rockwall itself would not be founded until 1854. Its small band of charter members, drawn largely from the Briscoe, Jones, and Williams families, worshipped in homes, schoolhouses, and a Masonic hall before raising their own building in 1876. It is counted the oldest congregation in the Dallas Baptist Association.

Rosebud, TX

When the railroad platted the town of Rosebud, a Baptist congregation followed within a year, organizing in 1890 in a schoolhouse on the Gott Farm with eleven charter members. By 1892 the townsite company had deeded a lot, and the church has stood on this block ever since, building larger sanctuaries as it grew. Its Ladies' Aid Society, missionary work, and support of a local Hispanic Baptist mission wove it into the fabric of community life.

Rosenberg, TX

Organized by three Baptist men in 1896, this congregation weathered early hardship when the great 1900 Galveston hurricane destroyed its unfinished building. Members worshipped in a borrowed church and even a rail car before buying a schoolhouse, then in 1912 built a brick sanctuary lit by the first electric lights in town. For years some baptisms were still held in the waters of the Brazos River.

Rusk, TX

In 1853, when Rusk was a young East Texas town, a small band of Baptist worshippers gathered in a private home to organize a congregation, at first sharing a Union Church with local Presbyterians. Over the following decades the fellowship moved, merged with a neighboring congregation, and raised successively larger sanctuaries, from an 1892 one-room frame church to a three-story building in the 1920s. Its story mirrors the slow maturing of a frontier settlement into an established community.

Salado, TX

Baptist revivals were held on the banks of Salado Creek as early as 1854, and in 1864 eleven men and women organized a congregation in the chapel of Salado College. The church grew quickly, built a two-story sanctuary shared with a Masonic hall in 1878, and sent missionaries as far as Brazil. Among its notable members was pastor George W. Baines — great-grandfather of President Lyndon B. Johnson — who later led Mary Hardin-Baylor College.

San Angelo, TX

Baptist missionary work reached the San Angelo area in 1881, and by 1883 a small fellowship had gathered on the West Texas frontier near Fort Concho. A state charter in 1886 gave the congregation its name, First Baptist Church of San Angelo, and the church grew despite drought, a cyclone, and the Army's abandonment of the nearby fort in 1889. From its Sunday School to missions abroad, the congregation became a mainstay of the young community's civic and spiritual life.

San Marcos, TX

Organized in 1857 by a traveling missionary, this congregation grew from worship in borrowed rooms into one of San Marcos's leading churches, raising ever-larger buildings across half a century. In 1908 its pastor founded the San Marcos Baptist Academy, cementing the church's role as a pioneer of church-related education in central Texas. Its pulpit and platform drew nationally known orators, including William Jennings Bryan and evangelist George W. Truett.

San Saba, TX

A generation before the town of San Saba existed, settlers gathered as a Baptist congregation meeting in homes along Simpson Creek, formed in 1856 under a traveling missionary preacher. As the frontier community matured, the fellowship worshiped in the county courthouse and a schoolhouse before raising its own buildings, weathering a 1923 fire and rebuilding with local marble and brick. Its long life mirrors the growth of a central Texas town from raw frontier to settled community.

Santo, TX

Chartered under an oak tree near the Santo East Cemetery in November 1872, this congregation began with only eight members on the banks of Palo Pinto Creek. First known as the Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Cottonwood Grove, it grew into the oldest continually active Baptist church in the county. For more than a century it has ordained ministers and served as a steady presence in a community shaped by ranching and farming.

Shamrock, TX

Founded in 1904 as only the second congregation in the young railroad town of Shamrock, this Baptist church began in the local schoolhouse before buying its own lot and completing a building in 1907. Lightning and fire leveled that first sanctuary in 1922, but the congregation regrouped through a theater, a borrowed Methodist building, and a canvas tabernacle to rebuild by 1926.

Silsbee, TX

First Baptist Church of Silsbee began in 1903 in a most fitting place for a booming East Texas rail-and-sawmill town: a railroad car. Formally organized in 1908, the congregation soon gained land and lumber from timber baron John Henry Kirby and grew alongside the community, weathering name changes, new sanctuaries, and even hurricanes Rita and Ike. For more than a century it has remained a fixture of Silsbee life.

Silverton, TX

Even before the town of Silverton was platted, Panhandle settlers gathered for a community Sunday school in a mercantile store and the county courthouse. Out of that early fellowship the First Baptist Church was organized with sixteen charter members, and by 1900 the congregation raised a modest one-room sanctuary. Over more than a century it grew alongside the town it helped found on the high plains of Briscoe County.

Smiley, TX

This congregation began in 1880 with a three-week brush-arbor revival on Smiley Lake, where 117 people were baptized after settler George W. Colley arranged the area's first Baptist meeting. Organized formally in 1882, the church built sanctuaries, split and reunited as the railroad birthed a new town of Smiley, and moved to town in 1915. Through generations of Sunday schools, women's groups, and mission work, it became a mainstay of Gonzales County community life.

Snyder, TX

Organized in May 1883—a year before Scurry County was even formally established—this congregation began as the Bledsoe Baptist Church, named for founder John S. Bledsoe, with worship held in the schoolhouse on alternate Sundays. It took the name First Baptist Church of Snyder in 1892 and bought the town lot it has occupied through four successive sanctuaries ever since. From a small frame building with a bell tower to a brick church and modern education plant, its growth tracks the town's own.

Stockdale, TX

Baptists in the small Wilson County town of Stockdale gathered their first congregation in 1874, worshiping in a humble picket building and borrowing a mill house and schoolhouse before raising a sanctuary of their own. Storms, rebuildings, and steady growth marked the decades that followed, and from 1916 the congregation reached beyond itself to sponsor a Mexican mission, ordaining a line of ministers of both Anglo and Mexican heritage. The story is a compact record of how faith communities anchored frontier Texas towns.

Sunnyvale, TX

Chartered as New Hope Baptist Church on July 3, 1904 with thirteen members under Dr. James B. Gambrell of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, this congregation grew alongside the community around it. When the surrounding settlements incorporated as the City of Sunnyvale in 1953, the church eventually took the town's name, and in 1978 it moved to its present site.

Sutherland Springs, TX

Founded in 1926, the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs grew from circuit-riding preachers and home meetings into a congregation that built its own sanctuaries—laborers, farmers, and truck drivers raising the 1949 building by hand from salvaged lumber. For decades the church anchored community life with Bible schools, creek-side baptisms, and outreach pantries. On November 5, 2017, a gunman killed 26 members, and the congregation rebuilt, determined to continue its history of service.

Sweetwater, TX

Sweetwater sprang up as a railroad town on the West Texas plains, and its first Baptist congregation organized in 1881 under English-born preacher Peter Turner. The members raised a steepled frame church the next year, sharing it for a time with other denominations. As the town grew, the congregation planted four mission churches and built larger sanctuaries.

Teague, TX

This congregation began in 1877 among Baptists in the village of Brewer Prairie and took its present name when the town was renamed Teague in 1906. Settled on the corner of 6th Avenue and Walnut Street, it has worshiped in several buildings on the same site — a first sanctuary, a 1929 replacement lost to fire, and a brick sanctuary completed in 1948. Its long continuity mirrors the growth of the town around it.

Temple, TX

Organized in 1874 as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the tiny Bell County settlement of Birdsdale, this congregation lost its first sanctuary to a tornado before following its members to the new railroad town of Temple, where it took its present name in 1881. Frame, then brick-and-stone buildings followed, and after an 1895 sanctuary burned in 1938 the church relocated to this site the same year. Active in local missionary work, it has served the community for well over a century.

Terrell, TX

The Rev. J. B. Daniel organized First Baptist Church of Terrell in 1876 with just 13 members, who met monthly for worship, and served as its first pastor. A small frame building went up on this block in 1879, the same year the enduring Women's Missionary Society was founded. A brick sanctuary followed in 1905, and its stained glass was carried into the present building completed in 1956, by which time membership had grown to about 850.

Texas City, TX

On March 16, 1905, five residents of the young port town of Texas City gathered for worship and, with the Rev. D.L. Griffith's help, founded First Baptist Church, meeting in private homes for its first decade. As the congregation grew it weathered the great 1915 hurricane, the Depression, and the catastrophic 1947 Texas City disaster before building its sanctuary here in the early 1950s. Through a century of hardship on the Gulf Coast, the church kept its doors open in service to the community.

Trenton, TX

In January 1877 the Baptists of Trenton first gathered to worship in the Burns school house, organizing soon after as Smyrna Baptist Church of Christ under their first pastor, Martin W. Gentry. The congregation raised a frame sanctuary on this site in 1897 and, after fire destroyed it in 1953, met in the high school auditorium until a new church was finished in 1954. Through associational ties and a century of rebuilding, the church has remained a fixture of community life in Fannin County.

Tyler, TX

Founded in 1848 with just six charter members meeting in a log-cabin courthouse, this congregation summoned worshippers by blowing a horn in the young town of Tyler. Fire twice destroyed its buildings, in 1855 and again in 1882, before the congregation settled on North Bois d'Arc Street and dedicated a sanctuary in 1889. The present Beaux Arts church, with its massive columns and pedimented portico, rose in 1913, making this one of the oldest continuously existing Baptist churches in Texas.
