Hillsboro, TX

Baptist preaching reached this part of Central Texas with the Rev. J. M. Samford in the 1840s, and after Hill County was organized in 1853 the county seat of Hillsboro drew its own congregation. The Baptist Church of Hillsboro was organized in 1874 and fully established the next year with a handful of charter members, its early growth aided by neighboring Baptist churches. Over the following century it replaced its first frame building with brick, added schools and sanctuaries, and hosted legendary Texas preachers including George W. Truett and J. M. Dawson.

Honey Grove, TX

Organized in 1847 by a Southern Baptist missionary, this congregation began with nine members meeting in a log schoolhouse in the earliest years of Anglo settlement here. Its story runs through the frictions of a shared frontier meetinghouse, a congregational split, and decades in the interdenominational Union Church before the Baptists raised their own sanctuary in 1884 and a larger one in 1912. One of its former pastors even helped launch a Baptist newspaper that anticipated a statewide religious publication.

Houston, TX

Baptists were meeting informally in the raw new town of Houston by 1838, and in 1841 a traveling minister organized a congregation of just sixteen members. Early pastors built the first church and grew the flock even as yellow fever, the Civil War, and Reconstruction thinned their ranks. Over the following century the church spawned missions, helped found a hospital, weathered the Depression and World War II, and grew into one of the largest congregations in the city.

Huntsville, TX

Organized in 1844 by the Rev. Z. N. Morrell, this was one of the earliest Baptist congregations in Texas, counting ex-Republic president Sam Houston among its members and the future ancestor of Lyndon Baines Johnson, the Rev. G. W. Baines, among its pastors. It dedicated its first building here in 1851, ran one of Texas's first regular Sunday schools by 1864, and hosted the Baptist State Convention five times. In 1868 its Black members requested letters of dismission to form a church of their own.

Hutchins, TX

The town of Hutchins dates to about 1860, and its Baptists worshiped with other denominations until organizing their own church in 1904 under Dr. George Wharton. Meeting first in the Methodist church, they completed a wooden sanctuary in 1911 and, over the following century, ran a Baptist school for nearly thirty years alongside music and mission programs.

Irving, TX

When developers laid out the town of Irving in 1903, they set aside land for several congregations, and the Baptists organized the next year with eighteen charter members. Early worship moved from a schoolhouse to rented rooms to a tabernacle before a permanent church rose in 1911. Over the following decades the congregation gained its first full-time pastor, took the name First Baptist Church of Irving, and expanded to fill a full city block as the town became a Dallas-area city.

Jacksboro, TX

This Baptist congregation organized in 1875 with seven members while U.S. soldiers still garrisoned nearby Fort Richardson on the North Texas frontier. Meeting first in the Masonic hall and courthouse, they raised their first building in 1889, and one pastor, Rice C. Farmer, helped bring the short-lived North Texas Baptist College to Jacksboro in the 1890s. Successive sanctuaries and a long-serving pastorate carried the church through the twentieth century.

Jacksonville, TX

When the International and Great Northern Railroad laid out the new town of Jacksonville along its line in 1872, it set aside lots for churches, and two deacons bought a pair for a Baptist congregation in 1873. Formally organized by twelve charter members in 1884, the church grew from sixty members in 1887 to a two-story brick sanctuary in 1914, then still larger buildings in 1950 and 1977. Throughout, it backed missionary work and Jacksonville College.

Jasper, TX

The First Baptist Church of Jasper was organized on December 23, 1855, with fifteen members, and held its first service on Christmas Day under the Rev. William Blackshear. Its rolls included enslaved worshippers as early as 1859, and its members were tied to the local Jasper Collegiate Institute. Growing congregations, the church built successively larger sanctuaries in 1893 and 1943 and helped plant several area missions.

Jefferson, TX

Organized in 1855 as a Missionary Baptist congregation, this Jefferson church grew alongside one of antebellum Texas's busiest river ports. Its early pastors included D. B. Culberson, father and grandfather of a Texas congressman and governor, and in 1874 its brick sanctuary drew more than a thousand delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention. Through a split, a reunion, and a 1944 fire, the congregation endured.

Johnson City, TX

Seven charter members formed this Missionary Baptist congregation in 1879, meeting first in the local schoolhouse while lumber for their 1900 church was hauled by wagon all the way from Austin. Fire destroyed a 1951 building in 1966, and the present structure followed in 1968. Members of President Lyndon B. Johnson's family were among those who worshiped here.

Josephine, TX

In 1888, Sam and Mrs. Tarrant gathered local families at the Reed's Chapel schoolhouse to organize a Baptist congregation under first pastor W.M. Wolfe, and a summer brush-arbor revival quickly added 27 members. The church grew from a wooden sanctuary around 1890 to a three-story brick building in 1911 and a modern sanctuary in 1964, its dirt-floor tabernacle hosting two-week revivals with organist Ella Smith serving for more than seventy years. When the town school was rebuilt in 1936–37, the church even sheltered its high school classes.

Jourdanton, TX

First Baptist organized in October 1909, just a month after the town of Jourdanton itself was founded, when seven residents gathered under a visiting minister and met in the community schoolhouse. Within a year they built a frame church, and in 1911 the women formed a missionary union that funded state and foreign missions and orphan care. New sanctuaries in 1946 and 1977 and a large worship center in 2003 tracked the congregation's steady growth.

Longview, TX

In the 1870s settlers in this corner of Gregg County gathered for worship in the Lawrenceville School, and in 1883 thirteen Baptists organized their own congregation, naming it for pioneer American missionary Adoniram Judson. They built their first meeting house in 1894, holding baptisms in a nearby creek, and by 1900 the surrounding school district — and later the town and post office — had all taken the Judson name. Anchored by founding families like the Whatleys, the church grew into the enduring heart of the community.

Junction, TX

In 1880, on the raw Texas Hill Country frontier, local residents gathered at the Kimble County courthouse to organize a Baptist church, guided by a circuit-riding pastor from nearby Menard. After the courthouse burned, the town shared a community building until the Baptists raised their own frame sanctuary here in 1887 — succeeded by a Spanish-style building in 1929 and a brick one in 1959. Through it all the congregation anchored Junction with worship, music, and mission work.

Karnes City, TX

This congregation began as a mission church in 1894, the same year Karnes City was founded as the new county seat. Early worshipers likely met in the schoolhouse before the first church rose in 1899, and baptisms were held in the San Antonio River or a ranch stock tank. As it grew, the church added a missionary society, Sunday school, youth groups, and even a long-running radio program, and helped plant other mission churches nearby.

Katy, TX

Founded in 1898 as Zion Baptist Church, this Katy congregation began when the Rev. T. L. Scruggs gathered a dozen charter members, many of them from the Morrison and Featherston families, in the town's one-room schoolhouse. A circuit-riding minister visited just once a month, alternating Sundays with other denominations, until the growing church built its own home in 1914. As the Gulf Coast economy boomed the congregation swelled past four thousand members by its 1998 centennial, when it raised a white frame chapel to echo its first building.

Kaufman, TX

Nine charter members gathered in 1871 to organize the First Baptist Church of Kaufman, meeting in homes until their first frame sanctuary rose in 1883. A women's Benevolent Society formed in 1885, and after a second church burned in 1937 the present building was dedicated in 1944. From those first nine, the congregation grew large enough to support a full staff, including a bilingual pastor for its Latin-American mission.

Keller, TX

Twenty members broke away from Mt. Gilead Baptist Church to found the Keller Baptist Church in 1882, just as the railroad reached this corner of Tarrant County and drew new settlers. They gathered first in a schoolhouse and a shared union church before establishing themselves, and in 1886 helped charter the Tarrant County Baptist Association. The Rev. Elihu Newton led them as first pastor.

Kennard, TX

About fourteen men and women organized the First Baptist Church of Kennard in October 1903, quickly buying land and raising a one-room house of worship in this Houston County town. For decades the congregation made do with shared and circuit-riding pastors before calling the Rev. W.P. Lott as its first full-time minister in 1945. Through the twentieth century the church grew its facilities, campaigned against liquor and gambling, and built youth, music, and scholarship programs toward its centennial.

Kennedale, TX

Organized in the 1880s, this Baptist congregation first met in a Kennedale schoolhouse and baptized its converts in nearby creeks and a small lake to the strains of "Shall We Gather at the River." Land was deeded to the church in 1887, and by 1896 the members had their own one-room building under Reverend G. W. Green. Through additions, a 1954 stone sanctuary lost to fire in 1959, and determined rebuilding, the church sustained more than a century of community life, including a long-running Women's Missionary Union founded in 1903.

Kerrville, TX

Eleven charter members gathered in 1887 to organize a Baptist congregation in the young Hill Country town of Kerrville, at first sharing a union meeting house with other denominations. Renamed First Baptist Church within a few years, the congregation built its own sanctuary in 1897, replaced it with brick in 1914, and raised its present home in 1951. For well over a century it has been woven into the life of the community.

Kilgore, TX

Five charter members founded this Baptist congregation in the small farming village of Kilgore in 1902, raising their first sanctuary in 1906. The 1930s brought the East Texas oil boom, which swelled Kilgore's population — and the church's rolls — almost overnight, prompting a new brick sanctuary in 1933. The congregation went on to help seed other Baptist churches in the region.

Killeen, TX

Founded in 1873 as the Baptist Church of Christ at Palo Alto, this fellowship followed its people to the new railroad town of Killeen in 1883 and was renamed under its first pastor, the Rev. Thomas H. Bacon. Its greatest surge came in 1942, when the building of nearby Fort Hood flooded the area with newcomers and swelled the congregation. Over the years the church helped spin off several other area congregations through its mission work.

Kingsville, TX

Just weeks after the railroad reached the brand-new town of Kingsville in July 1904, twelve residents organized a Baptist church under Bro. R.L. Pearce. Members built their first sanctuary in 1907, and through programs like the Woman's Missionary Union and Baptist Student Union—and ties to nearby university students—the congregation grew alongside the young town.

Kountze, TX

The Baptist Church of Hardin organized in 1860, but when the railroad bypassed the county-seat town of Hardin in 1881, its people drifted to booming Kountze nearby. There they helped fill the town's first multi-denominational house of worship, formally organizing as a Kountze congregation by the 1890s. A 1908 loan from the Southern Baptist Convention funded the first frame church, beginning a century of steady growth.

Kyle, TX

Founded at Mountain City in 1872 under the Rev. J. C. Tally, this Baptist congregation was busy from the start: within two months it licensed a minister, in 1879 sent off 26 members to seed a nearby church, and in 1881 moved to Kyle, taking the town's name. Its early history reflects the restless, multiplying pattern of frontier Baptist life.

La Feria, TX

In the small Rio Grande Valley town of La Feria, eleven charter members organized this Baptist congregation in 1912 under the Rev. Mr. Roberts of Ohio, worshiping alongside other denominations until they could build a home of their own. Through the 1920s they added a Women's Missionary Society, a graded Sunday School, and a youth union, and in June 1925 dedicated a distinctive domed sanctuary on this site. The church grew with the surrounding farming communities of Cameron County.

Ladonia, TX

The Baptists of Ladonia trace their beginnings to 1859, when the Rev. Robert Cooke Buckner rode monthly from Paris to preach, and the congregation formally organized in January 1860. In its early years worshipers sat on split logs in a shared church-and-schoolhouse before raising their first building in 1877. The church became a hub of regional Baptist life, even hosting an 1867 convention thinned by a yellow fever outbreak, and its women's missionary groups were active as early as 1869.

Lampasas, TX

Organized in 1856 as Sulphur Springs Baptist Church — the same year the town and county of Lampasas were created — this congregation grew alongside the frontier community it served. Early settler Moses Hughes helped found it, and pioneer preacher Richard Howard led its first flock; over the decades it built and rebuilt sanctuaries along Sulphur Creek and in town, weathering funding delays and a destructive 1937 fire to remain a fixture of civic life.

Lancaster, TX

Lancaster's Baptists met in private homes through the 1840s and 1850s before fourteen charter members formally organized in 1867, worshiping first in a shared Masonic Hall and baptizing converts in Ten Mile Creek. In 1873 they built the town's first church building, its steeple bell now displayed in the churchyard. The congregation grew across successive buildings and a Ladies Aid Society that helped fund the first parsonage.

Lavon, TX

Long before it had a building of its own, the Baptist congregation in Lavon shared the two-story schoolhouse with Presbyterians, Methodists, and Pentecostals, taking turns on alternating Sundays. Formally organized in 1949, the First Baptist Church of Lavon grew from the memory of three vanished country churches reaching back to 1857, and members raised their sanctuary using salvaged lumber, pews, and even the old pulpit from those closed congregations.

League City, TX

Organized in the Clear Creek Schoolhouse in December 1887, this was the first Baptist congregation on the Galveston County mainland. It called its first permanent pastor in 1895 and dedicated its first church building on this site the following summer, marking the growth of settled community life on the coastal prairie.

Liberty Hill, TX

This congregation grew from frontier roots, tracing to churches that met in a brush arbor and a country schoolhouse before merging in 1854. When the Austin & Northwestern Railroad was built, the town of Liberty Hill relocated, and the church reorganized on this site in 1882. Its present sanctuary has served worshippers since 1904.

Lockney, TX

In December 1890, nineteen charter members led by the Rev. I. B. Kimbrough organized what became the First Missionary Baptist Church of Floyd County, worshipping first in a settler's dugout home and a country schoolhouse on the West Texas plains. The congregation merged with a neighboring Baptist church in 1899, met in the town schoolhouse until building its own sanctuary in 1906, and took the name First Baptist Church of Lockney in 1913.

Longview, TX

This congregation has met continuously since 1871, when fifteen people led by the Rev. D. S. Snodgrass formed a church. In 1874 the Texas and Pacific Railway deeded it two town lots, where it raised its first frame sanctuary and called its first full-time pastor. As Longview grew, larger brick sanctuaries followed, and the church helped establish several other congregations in the community.

Lovelady, TX

Baptist life in Lovelady began with a union Sunday school by 1876, and a Baptist congregation was active by the time the 1879 Neches River association named a pastor from the town. In 1881 the Houston & Great Northern Railroad donated this lot to the church and the Knights of Honor, who shared a two-story frame building — lodge above, worship below. A larger sanctuary followed in 1909, and generations of the founders' descendants have worshipped here since.

Lubbock, TX

When Lubbock was barely a settlement, the First Baptist congregation organized in 1891 and met in the county jail until a small church was built in 1901. Early members funded their work with box suppers, ice cream parties, and quilting bees, and the church grew alongside the town—swelling when Texas Technological College opened in 1925 and welcoming servicemen from the area's Army airfields during World War II. By mid-century it had moved to its present Broadway location and broadened into wide-ranging ministries.

Lufkin, TX

When the railroad reached the raw townsite of Lufkin in the early 1880s, a Baptist congregation of just nine members organized to serve the new East Texas community. The railroad itself donated the land, and the first sanctuary rose in 1893. From its earliest days the church anchored the growing town and championed missions and Christian education.

Luling, TX

Seventeen charter members organized this Baptist congregation in December 1875 with encouragement from district missionary the Rev. G.W. Lane, worshipping outdoors and in the Masonic Lodge Hall until the first church rose in 1876. A revival that autumn swelled membership to fifty. After a 1939 fire destroyed the sanctuary, education wing, and parsonage, the cornerstone of the present building was laid that November, with Gov. W. Lee O'Daniel delivering the dedicatory address.

Lyford, TX

Lyford's Baptists began gathering around 1909, when a preacher rode monthly from Harlingen to hold services, and they organized the First Baptist Church in 1911. For years they met in community buildings and baptized converts in a farm stock tank, until a church was raised in 1923 on land donated by the Piper family. The congregation went on to help plant Spanish-speaking Baptist churches across the region.

Lytle, TX

Dr. J.V.E. Covey and sixteen charter members organized this Baptist congregation in April 1893, holding their first meeting under a stand of oak trees and baptizing early converts in the Medina River. A small frame building followed, and over the decades the church raised ever-larger structures for its growing flock. It also helped launch congregations in nearby Natalia, Atascosa, LaCoste, and Castroville.

Mabank, TX

Organized in the closing years of the 1890s by nine charter members under a traveling Baptist missionary, this fellowship began as Lawndale Baptist Church a mile to the northeast. When the railroad reached the area in 1900, the congregation moved to the new townsite and became Mabank Baptist. Its early meetinghouse did triple duty—home to Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian worshippers and to the public school—before growing into successive larger sanctuaries.

Madisonville, TX

In 1856, missionary J.W.D. Creath deeded town lots to a fledgling Baptist congregation in the newly formed town of Madisonville. After lean early years and a merger with a nearby revival-born church, the congregation built its first permanent home in 1889–1890, with church women raising funds for a bell and organ. Reorganized as First Baptist Church in 1903, it went on to sustain mission work, including a Hispanic mission established in 1983.

Malakoff, TX

After the railroad reached Malakoff in 1880, a union congregation serving both Baptists and Methodists relocated near the tracks — and in 1884, the story goes, denominational differences led thirty-six members to found their own Baptist church. They built a sanctuary in 1885 that doubled as a community center and schoolroom, organized a Sunday School, and grew steadily, later establishing a Hispanic mission and raising successively larger buildings across the twentieth century.

Marlin, TX

In 1851 the Falls County commissioners set aside Marlin town lots for the community's first churches, and pioneer preacher Z. N. Morrell organized a small Baptist congregation the next spring with ten members. Early worship moved from the log courthouse to a schoolhouse before a brick sanctuary rose in 1872, followed by later buildings as the fellowship grew. When railroad noise disrupted services, the congregation relocated in the early 20th century and planted a mission that endures today.

Mart, TX

In April 1878, a minister and eighteen Baptists gathered beneath a large elm tree at what is now the Mart City Cemetery to organize the first church in the settlement then called Willow Springs. The fellowship built a church near the tree that also served as a schoolhouse, and burials in the adjacent cemetery began in 1880. Under a long-serving pastor its membership nearly quadrupled, and the congregation moved twice more before settling at its present home in 1906.

Mathis, TX

Organized in 1905 by the Rev. Isaac Willingham and seven charter members, First Baptist Church of Mathis grew alongside the new railroad town, meeting first in a borrowed building and a hall above a store. In 1939 it began a ministry to the local Hispanic community that grew into a mission the church purchased and staffed, eventually constituted in 1980 as Primera Iglesia Bautista. The congregation built a long record of charitable giving across Texas and beyond.

McGregor, TX

The First Baptist Church of McGregor traces its lineage back to the 1858 Onion Creek Baptist Church and was formally established in 1884 by ministers and members of the Comanche Springs congregation. Building its first church here in 1886, it grew steadily — Sunday school reached 280 pupils by 1911, and the Ladies Aid Society's fundraising made possible a new sanctuary in 1914. By 1960 the congregation numbered well over 600 members.

McKinney, TX

Organized in April 1882 under the Rev. A. R. Griggs, this fellowship began as the Second Baptist Church, worshipping in the open air beneath a brush arbor. In 1893 church trustees received land here from T. J. Brown and former Texas governor James W. Throckmorton, and the first sanctuary went up the next year. For well over a century the congregation has ordained ministers and served the growing community of McKinney.

Melissa, TX

This Collin County congregation was organized in October 1884 as the Melissa Baptist Church of Christ, beginning with twenty-two charter members under first pastor Levi Dunn. For years it met only monthly, moving to twice-monthly services in 1898 and weekly worship by 1948. A 1921 tornado leveled the original building, but the congregation rebuilt by 1924 and has anchored community life in Melissa ever since.

Meridian, TX

In 1859, two years before the Civil War, missionaries of the Texas Baptist Convention gathered ten residents of Meridian to found this frontier congregation in newly settled Bosque County. In an age before permanent buildings, circuit-riding preachers carried the Sunday sermon from town to town, and the fledgling church made do in the county courthouse and the community schoolhouse until members raised a sanctuary in the 1870s. The congregation rebuilt on new ground in 1888 and again in 1947 as the town grew around it.

Mexia, TX

Organized in 1872 by the Rev. W. Henry Parks, this congregation drew charter members from the older Springfield church after the Houston and Texas Central Railroad bypassed that town in 1871 and Mexia absorbed it. The church built its first home in 1873 and erected four buildings on this site over the years. It helped found two other churches and sent missionaries to Brazil and Africa.

Midland, TX

Soon after Midland's founding in 1885, Baptists from Pecos, Big Spring, and Midland pooled their resources to hire the Rev. S.B. Callaway to serve all three towns, and under him this congregation organized in 1886 and quickly built its first house of worship. As Midland grew—especially with the petroleum boom that followed World War II—the church expanded and relocated to keep pace. It has remained a spiritual and civic anchor of the city ever since.

Milford, TX

Chartered in 1855 with just eleven members gathered in Dr. J.M. Higgins's home, Milford's First Baptist congregation was among the earliest in newly settled Ellis County. Its founding pastor, Alabama-born J.M. Perry, led a fellowship that worshiped in a shared 1856 chapel before moving to this site in 1871, where Baptists and Cumberland Presbyterians together financed a sanctuary. Later structures rose in 1890 and 1917 as the town grew.

Mineola, TX

First Baptist Church of Mineola grew out of nondenominational services the Rev. T. L. Scruggs held in a log schoolhouse in 1873, the year the railroads created the town. The congregation formally organized around 1879 and worshiped in its 1877 frame sanctuary, known as Powell's Chapel. Successive brick sanctuaries and education buildings followed across the next century.

Mineral Wells, TX

Born out of an 1882 revival led by traveling preacher William Evander Penn, the 'Texas Evangelist,' the First Baptist Church of Mineral Wells gathered 54 charter members in a booming spa town. Over the decades its pulpit drew famous evangelists like Billy Sunday and 'Gypsy' Smith, and its members planted mission churches across the community. Early pastor George Webb Slaughter had once carried dispatches for Sam Houston during the Texas Revolution.

Jacksonville, TX

The first church in the Pine Springs area began as an ecumenical congregation in 1853, and in 1866—just after the Civil War—the Rev. E.M. Carter and deacon Elias Stephens organized it as Union Baptist Church with fifteen members. Renamed and rebuilt over the years, it saw future Baylor University president W.R. White serve as pastor from 1911 to 1913. The community itself took the name Mixon in 1889, and the church, renamed First Baptist Church of Mixon in 1946, endures as one of the settlement's last landmarks.

Moody, TX

The First Baptist Church of Moody was organized in 1855 in the nearby community of Perry, with Elder S. G. O'Bryan as its first pastor and the Rev. John McClain among its early ministers. When the Santa Fe Railroad bypassed Perry in the early 1880s, the congregation followed opportunity to the new railroad town of Moody, relocating in 1883. Over the decades it ordained pastors from its own membership and helped anchor the surrounding community.

Mt. Vernon, TX

Organized on October 5, 1849, under the Baptist missionary William M. Pickett, this congregation first gathered in a log building east of what is now the Franklin County Courthouse, only a year after the Mount Vernon post office opened. Originally called New Liberty, it took the name Mount Vernon Baptist Church in 1870. Its early roll included the Rev. Joshua F. Johnson, who would sit as a delegate at the 1861 Secession Convention in Austin.
