Cameron, TX

Founded in 1853 by itinerant preachers, First Baptist of Cameron grew alongside its Milam County town through the second half of the 19th century. In 1914 it extended membership to the community's Mexican-Americans and later helped establish the Mexican Baptist Church of Cameron in 1925. Canadian, TX

In 1894 seven women organized the First Baptist Church of Canadian with help from a visiting Amarillo minister, and the fledgling congregation swelled when dozens of revival converts joined soon after. Worship moved among borrowed spaces until a brick sanctuary was finished in 1911, with later buildings following as the Panhandle town grew. The marker traces a familiar arc of frontier faith: a handful of founders, a tent-revival surge, and decades of steady expansion.

Canton, TX

Founded on September 21, 1871 under the Rev. J. B. McDaniel, the First Baptist Church of Canton was the town's first organized congregation, gathering a small band of charter families as its founding members. It began in a purchased school building, added a Sunday School in 1885, replaced its first home in 1906, and completed its present plant in 1959.

Carthage, TX

A decade after Carthage became the county seat, pioneers organized a Baptist church in 1858 under the Rev. J. H. Whitmore; its early roll of twenty-one members included an enslaved woman named Margaret Moore. The congregation dwindled and disbanded during the Civil War before reorganizing in 1867 and dedicating a building in 1878. A 1901 dispute over missionary funds split the church, whose surviving group took the name First Baptist and, sustained through hard years by the Ladies' Aid Society, flourished into the modern era.

Celeste, TX

The First Baptist Church of Celeste was organized in 1887, the very year the Santa Fe Railroad platted the town it would serve, a common pairing on the North Texas frontier where rail lines conjured communities into being. Its first congregation shared a two-story building with the local Masonic Lodge until fire claimed it in 1907. Rebuilt and later relocated, the church has remained a fixture of Celeste life for well over a century.

Chico, TX

Organized in 1874 in the home of B. F. Booth, this Baptist congregation was founded with help from pioneer Missionary Noah T. Byars, worshiping in members' homes, a summertime brush arbor, and the local schoolhouse before building its own churches. From an original membership of five it grew past 400, adding ever-larger buildings from a frame church up to the 1962 sanctuary. Its story mirrors the steady growth of a Texas farm town.

Cisco, TX

When Baptists first gathered here in 1878, they met in a one-room log schoolhouse in the little settlement of Red Gap, organizing seven area churches into an association. The town's fate turned on the rails: where the Texas & Pacific met the Houston & Texas Central, the new town of Cisco rose and Red Gap faded, so the congregation followed the tracks in 1881. Across the next half-century it endured a killing tornado, two building fires, and the bust of an early oil boom, meeting in city hall and schoolhouses until it could rebuild.

Clarksville, TX

A Kentucky minister and seven charter members founded this Baptist congregation in 1847, when Red River County was still a sparsely settled frontier reachable only by rough, weather-beaten roads. Through successive sanctuaries built in 1850, 1885, 1905, and 1959, the church grew into a pillar of Clarksville, launching Sunday schools, missionary societies, and even a daughter congregation. Its story traces the westward spread of frontier religious community across antebellum and modern Texas.

Claude, TX

Nineteen charter members organized this Baptist congregation in the Panhandle town of Claude in May 1890, at first sharing the local Presbyterian building before raising their own frame sanctuary in 1899 on donated land. Brick and then modern buildings followed over the decades as the community grew around it. In a raw ranching-and-farming country, the church offered settlers a steadying, uplifting anchor.

Claytonville, TX

Founded on the High Plains in 1891 as New Hope Baptist Church of Christ, this congregation was renamed Whitfield Baptist Church in 1912 and gathered a church, parsonage, and cabin at the Plains Baptist Assembly Grounds. As a new business community grew up around a cotton gin built in the 1950s by M. C. Clayton, the congregation moved to the paved highway and raised the town's first church building in 1962–63, taking the Claytonville name in 1964.

Cleburne, TX

Baptist missionary W. A. Mason organized the First Baptist Church of Cleburne with sixteen members in 1868, just as the young town became the Johnson County seat. Under pastors like J. R. Clarke and George W. Baines, Jr., the congregation acquired property, raised buildings, and helped found three new Baptist churches. A new auditorium replaced its aging sanctuary in 1941, capping a long history of mission work at home and overseas.

Coldspring, TX

Formally organized in 1848 in a rough settlement once called 'Coonskin' and then 'Fireman's Hill,' Laurel Hill Baptist Church began with just four members under missionary pastor Joseph Warner Dossey Creath. General James B. Davis, a friend of Sam Houston, donated land for the church, its baptismal pool, and cemetery, and in 1853 members helped found the Cold Springs Female College — an early Texas Baptist school that closed with the coming of the Civil War. After fires, courthouse relocations, and rebuildings, the congregation was renamed First Baptist Church of Coldspring and marked its 150th anniversary in 1998.

Colorado City, TX

Begun as a mission station in 1881 by the Rev. George W. Baines — a former Baylor University president — this Colorado City congregation was formally organized in 1882 on land donated by railroad developer and ex-Georgia governor Joseph E. Brown. Tornadoes repeatedly tested the church, destroying an early building in 1884 and turning a later structure into an emergency hospital in 1923. In 1890 the congregation helped charter Simmons College, today Hardin-Simmons University.

Commerce, TX

Begun in November 1883 with nine charter members as the Missionary Baptist Church of Commerce, this congregation first worshiped in a shared Union church building before raising its own sanctuary. As it outgrew that home, its Women's Missionary Society raised funds for a new site, completed in 1913. Renamed First Baptist in 1933, the church became a civic leader in Commerce and a longtime presence in the life of East Texas State University students.

Copperas Cove, TX

Organized in 1885 by the Reverend J. F. Baker and thirteen charter members, this congregation first gathered in a community schoolhouse. The Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway sold the members a plot for a single dollar, and they raised their first sanctuary in 1890; a second, built in 1908, still survives as Sunday School space. Over the years the church sent out missionaries and ministers while anchoring the growing town of Copperas Cove.

Corpus Christi, TX

In August 1878, when Corpus Christi was still a small, isolated coastal village, a handful of residents gathered in a private home to organize the First Baptist Church with eight charter members under pioneer missionary Rev. J.W.D. Creath. Early worship took place in a renovated blacksmith shop before the congregation built a brick sanctuary in 1910 and moved to Ocean Drive in 1950. Over the decades the church helped spawn several other local congregations and became known for its community ministries.

Corsicana, TX

Organized in 1848 as the United Baptist Church under pioneer preacher Noah Turner Byars, this Corsicana congregation counted early Texas Baptist leaders like Judge R.E.B. Baylor and the Rev. Z.N. Morrell among those present at its founding. Members worshiped first in a shared community building, then a vacant store, before settling at this site in 1901. Its pulpit produced figures of national reach, including W.B. Bagby, the first Southern Baptist missionary to Brazil.

Cotulla, TX

When town founder Joseph Cotulla gave land for a Baptist church in 1882, he helped plant one of the community's earliest congregations, organized around 1883–1884 by the missionary Rev. W. D. Johnson. Members worshiped in the Methodist sanctuary until they raised their own frame building in 1889, where the noted minister and educator John Van Epps Covey preached the first sermon. Covey lived in Cotulla and served the church at times until his death in 1898.

Crawford, TX

Organized in 1878 with about a dozen members meeting in the Crawford schoolhouse, this Baptist congregation weathered lean early years until an 1884 revival swelled its ranks to eighty. It built its first meetinghouse in the 1890s and drew strength from nearby Baylor University — the young George W. Truett led a revival here as a student before becoming one of the era's most famous preachers. For well over a century the church has been a spiritual and community anchor in Crawford.

Crockett, TX

Baptists were worshipping in Crockett as early as 1846, and in 1850 a congregation was formally organized as Mt. Zion Baptist Church, building its first sanctuary along the old El Camino Real. Renamed First Baptist Church of Crockett, it worshipped in the county courthouse during construction, lost a sanctuary to fire in 1946, and relocated to a new home by 1949. More than a century of moves and rebuildings traces the growth of this East Texas town.

Crowley, TX

First Baptist Church of Crowley began in 1896 as a 27-member rural congregation and grew, over nearly a century, into a thousand-member suburban church in southwestern Tarrant County. Its story is one of steady expansion — a 1899 auditorium, a donated 1947 army barrack pressed into service as Sunday school space, new sanctuaries in 1951 and 1978, and even the physical relocation of a two-story education building in 1980.

Dayton, TX

Dayton's first Baptist congregation formed in 1878 when ten worshippers gathered in a one-room schoolhouse, led at first by circuit-riding ministers who traveled between frontier flocks. The church moved into a shared Union Church in 1895, then began building its own sanctuary in 1901 after the catastrophic 1900 Galveston hurricane damaged that structure. Through Ladies Aid societies, youth ministry, and missions launched in the 1910s, the congregation grew into an enduring community institution.

Decatur, TX

Organized in 1856 under the Rev. J.T. Willis, this Baptist congregation first met in a Taylorsville log cabin in the town that became Decatur. By the late 1880s its pastor was preaching to both the white congregation and Decatur's African American community, and the church worked closely with the school that grew into Decatur Baptist College. Generations of pastors kept the congregation woven into the town's civic and educational life.

Del Rio, TX

First Baptist Church of Del Rio began in 1896 with a seminary-trained pastor and a missionary couple who ministered to railroad workers from a rail car named "Goodwill." Organized with six charter members, the congregation moved from an adobe building to a brick-and-stone sanctuary whose 1925 cornerstone traveled with them again in 1960 to a new home on Avenue G. Over more than a century the church spun off other congregations across the region, including El Buen Pastor and Northside Baptist.

Denton, TX

Twelve men and women gathered in Denton County's log-cabin courthouse in 1858 to organize what they called the Union Baptist Church, meeting for years in borrowed Masonic and Presbyterian halls. Renamed First Baptist Church of Denton by about 1880, the congregation raised a succession of buildings—a white frame structure, a larger hall lost to fire in 1917, and a columned brick church in 1918—as its membership grew with the town. Across generations it became woven into Denton's civic and religious life.

Devine, TX

Founded in 1882 by two ministers and thirty-five charter members, this was the first congregation organized in the young town of Devine. Its members first gathered under a prominent oak and in a schoolhouse before raising a sanctuary around 1890, replacing it in 1912 and again in 1951. The church seeded two others as missions and, over the years, welcomed notable visitors including a former Texas governor and several Baylor University presidents.

Dripping Springs, TX

Organized in June 1872 with twelve charter members, this Hill Country congregation helped form the Pedernales Baptist Association the next year. Its members went on to found the Dripping Springs Academy in 1880. The stone sanctuary standing today was built in 1901 and dedicated in 1902.

Edcouch, TX

Born from a non-denominational Sunday school in 1920, this Baptist congregation was formally organized in 1924 as the Los Indios Baptist Church and moved several times as the new farm country around Edcouch took shape. When the town was platted in 1927 the church relocated into it and took the name First Baptist Church of Edcouch, dedicating a brick building in 1949. Its history traces the settlement of a Rio Grande Valley farm town in the boom decades after the railroad arrived.

Eddy, TX

Begun in 1875 as Sage Chapel, this congregation literally moved with its town, hauling its one-room frame sanctuary two miles east to the new railroad community of Eddy in 1882. In an era when a small settlement could afford only one building, the church doubled as the community schoolhouse and was even shared with the local Methodists until a dedicated Baptist sanctuary rose in 1912 — the third structure, after two earlier ones burned. The church grew alongside the town it helped anchor.

Eden, TX

The Rev. Zachariah Martin Wells, a Baptist organizer who had planted churches across the Hill Country counties, gathered Eden's Baptists in August 1886 in a shared school-and-church building. From sixteen members in 1891 the congregation grew quickly, buying this site in 1905 and raising a frame sanctuary with help from many non-Baptist neighbors. Early ministers baptized converts in Brady Creek and a stock tank, and the church added Red Cross work in World War I and a Vacation Bible School by 1944.

Edgewood, TX

In December 1890, elders E. B. Eakin and S. E. Reeves gathered fifteen charter members to organize this Baptist congregation. In its first two years the fellowship worshiped wherever it could — the community schoolhouse, a brush arbor, even a blacksmith shop — before dedicating its own building in May 1892. It has grown and rebuilt with the town ever since.

Edom, TX

First Baptist Church of Edom traces its roots to the 1850s, when early settlers of Van Zandt County organized a Baptist congregation under its first pastor, Elder J. J. Whitmore. The church grew with the community, rebuilding after fires and even hosting Edom's schoolchildren in 1934 when their school burned. Over the decades it added missionary work, scholarships and a Red Cross disaster shelter, becoming a lasting community anchor.

El Paso, TX

In August 1882 a handful of Baptists first gathered in a private El Paso home under the Rev. George Baines, Jr., chartering this congregation a week later with just 22 members. Their first sanctuary went up in 1885 as the border town was taking shape, and a 1922 merger with Central Baptist brought the church to this site. Over the years its missions seeded a dozen more churches on both sides of the Rio Grande.

Eldorado, TX

Fifteen charter members organized this congregation as the Eldorado Missionary Baptist Church on September 1, 1901, and the very next day seven new members were baptized in the South Concho River. The first sanctuary went up in 1906 on donated land, replaced by a new building in 1928 that was later remodeled. The church helped organize other local Baptist congregations and supported outreach and missionary work.

Elkhart, TX

Founded in April 1886 when J.W. Cromwell and six others organized a Baptist congregation in a community that had none, this Elkhart church traces its roots to an 1876 building on the Quarles plantation that served as both school and meeting house. Fire twice destroyed its homes — in 1943, taking all the early records, and again in 1963 — before a new sanctuary was dedicated in 1964. One of the oldest churches in the city, it has anchored Elkhart's spiritual and social life for well over a century.

Farmers Branch, TX

Thomas and Sarah Keenan settled at Farmers Branch in 1842, during the Republic of Texas era, and began a family cemetery here after burying their infant son the next year. With the Rev. David Myers they helped organize a Baptist congregation in 1846; when that group moved on, twelve members reestablished Baptist worship in 1870 as the Farmers Branch Missionary Baptist Church, first meeting in the local school. Growing steadily across the following century, it took the name First Baptist Church of Farmers Branch in 1951.

Farmersville, TX

On a spring day in 1865, as the Civil War drew to its close, fifteen charter members gathered under a brush arbor at this Collin County site to organize Farmersville's First Baptist Church, calling the Rev. John C. Averitt as their first pastor. The congregation worshiped in homes and the Masonic Hall before building a simple frame church in 1877, its steeple bell announcing news to the town. A growing membership replaced it in 1900 with the present brick sanctuary, a picturesque blend of architectural styles crowned with pressed-metal roofing and flanking towers.

Florence, TX

In April 1856 settlers in the farming and ranching community of Florence gathered to hear the Rev. Robert Hay Taliaferro preach and to organize a church, first known as the Baptist Church of Christ. Among the noted ministers who followed was the Rev. George Washington Baines, a Baylor University president and great-grandfather of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The congregation's 1869 sanctuary doubled as the town's schoolhouse and a gathering place for its civic and fraternal life.

Floresville, TX

The Rev. John Washburn came from Illinois to Texas in 1877 and soon settled in Floresville to lead the Floresville Academy, and it was there in August 1878 that some twenty charter members gathered at the Wilson County Courthouse to organize this Baptist fellowship. For its first decade the congregation worshipped in the courthouse before buying land — once part of the vast Arocha league grants — and raising a simple 40-by-60-foot church in 1889. The building was enlarged and rebuilt across the following century as the congregation grew.

Floydada, TX

On July 19, 1891, the Rev. I. B. Kimbrough and a handful of worshippers gathered in Joe Arnold's dugout home to organize the Floyd City Baptist Church, meeting early on in the North Side School and the local Methodist church. Renamed First Baptist Church of Floydada when the town changed its name, the congregation called its first resident pastor in 1897, started a Sunday School in 1899, and built its first frame sanctuary here in 1908, growing into a lasting fixture of Floyd County life.

Fort Davis, TX

Reverends L. R. Millican and D. B. Rose gathered six charter members into this Baptist congregation in 1896, high in the mountains of far West Texas near Fort Davis. For years the Baptists shared buildings with local Methodists and Presbyterians, worshiped in a converted skating rink and theater, and finally raised a traditional church in 1942. The congregation sent missionaries into Mexico and remained woven into community life for more than a century.

Galveston, TX

Organized in 1840 in a private home, this was among the first Protestant congregations formed after the Republic of Texas freed settlers from the Mexican requirement to be Catholic, an occasion many Galvestonians welcomed with celebration. Its early membership included enslaved people, and in 1855 white members bought a lot so Black worshippers could found their own Avenue L Baptist Church, deeded to them after the Civil War. Among the founding deacons was Gail Borden, Jr., who drew on experiments begun in Galveston to patent condensed milk in 1858; the congregation weathered the catastrophic 1900 hurricane that destroyed its steepled sanctuary.

Garland, TX

Baptists in the pioneer Duck Creek community met in a log schoolhouse before formally organizing Antioch Baptist Church in 1868 with sixteen members. A Ladies' Aid Society, organized in 1883, worked to sustain the church as it moved into the booming new town of Garland in 1890. Through an amicable split and reunion, new buildings, and steady growth, it took the name First Baptist Church of Garland in 1946 and went on to help establish nineteen missions.

Gatesville, TX

Organized in 1856 with fewer than a dozen members meeting in the Coryell County courthouse, this Gatesville congregation grew over generations from homes to a shared 1866 stone building that also served as a community school for all denominations. It built its first dedicated sanctuary in 1872 and progressively larger ones as membership swelled. It remains woven into the town's history.

Giddings, TX

Founded in 1872, this Giddings congregation counted just sixteen members under pastor J. Budd the next year and raised its first building in 1881, west of the present site. Over its first century a series of long-serving pastors guided its growth to some 300 members. The marker records the steady work of a small-town church across four generations.

Gilmer, TX

This Baptist congregation began in a log cabin in 1846, the year Texas joined the Union, as the Gilmer Missionary Baptist Church of Christ. Over the following decades it grew from a couple dozen members into hundreds, erecting successive buildings, adding a Sunday School and a Ladies Aid Society, and calling its first full-time pastor in 1904. Renamed First Baptist Church of Gilmer in 1929, it has grown alongside its Upshur County town ever since.

Godley, TX

In the spring of 1878, farm families in rural Johnson County gathered in a private home to organize a Baptist congregation, one of countless church-plantings that knit together thinly settled post–Civil War Texas. Called Bethany Baptist at first, the fellowship met only a couple of Sundays a month, a rhythm shaped by the circuit preaching common on the prairie, and joined the Alvarado Baptist Association in 1880. As the new town of Godley grew nearby, the congregation followed it into town in 1899 and later took the name First Baptist in 1974.

Goliad, TX

The Rev. John F. Hillyer and twelve charter members organized the First Baptist Church of Goliad under an oak tree in 1849, then spent half a century worshiping in borrowed and self-built spaces. Storms repeatedly tested the congregation—a cyclone destroyed their 1899 building and a 1919 storm leveled its 1907 successor—and for a time the church carried the name Mary E. Lott Memorial in a parishioner's honor. Restored to the First Baptist name in 1959, the congregation has stayed active in outreach and mission work, including an early Mexican mission.

Granbury, TX

After the Civil War, a small band of worshippers gathered near where Lambert's Branch meets the Brazos, and in 1866 a traveling preacher named J.N. Chandler agreed to lead them for nearly two decades. The congregation organized a Sunday school, joined the Paluxy Association, and dedicated its first sanctuary in 1884. Its women's missionary societies raised funds for buildings and community causes, and the church has supported missions from neighboring hamlets to overseas.

Grapeland, TX

As Baptists from surrounding farms moved into the thriving railroad town of Grapeland, they organized this congregation in 1891, worshipping in the public school until a frame church was finished in 1909. Fire destroyed that building in 1948, and it was rebuilt the next year. The church has kept a full-time pastor since 1924 and helped found a local mission in 1986.

Grapevine, TX

Baptists on the Grapevine prairie were meeting in their homes as early as 1846 and later in a log schoolhouse before formally organizing a church on Christmas Day, 1869. The eighteen charter members called A. J. Hallford as their first pastor and completed their first sanctuary in 1871. From those pioneer roots the congregation grew into a steady presence in the growing town.

Groesbeck, TX

When the Houston & Texas Central Railroad routed past Old Springfield in 1871, the new town of Groesbeck drew away settlers — including Baptists whose congregation traced back to an 1846 church. Organized in 1876 and shaped by traveling revivalists such as W. E. Penn, the church grew alongside the young railroad town. One early member, L. L. Foster, went on to serve as a Texas Railroad Commissioner and president of Texas A&M.

Hale Center, TX

Organized religion on the High Plains of Hale County dates to 1883, when Methodist minister Horatio Graves and his family became the area's first permanent settlers and made their home a school, gathering place, and union church. As the settlements of Epworth and Hale City merged into Hale Center, twelve worshippers organized the Hale City Missionary Baptist Church in 1891 under the Rev. I.B. Kimbrough, meeting in schoolhouses until their own sanctuary was finished in 1908. The congregation grew alongside the town it helped anchor.

Hallettsville, TX

Baptists in Hallettsville began worshipping together around 1851, meeting in a shared three-story building that also served as school, union church, and Masonic lodge. The growing congregation bought this block in 1882 and raised a frame sanctuary in 1884. Remarkably, that original 1884 building was preserved within the design of the modern brick church that still surrounds it.

Hamilton, TX

The First Baptist Church of Hamilton traces its roots to circuit preaching by Elder D. S. Babb in the years just after the Civil War, and formally organized in 1873 with a small band of charter members. In its early decades the congregation worshipped in a box schoolhouse, the county courthouse, and a borrowed Presbyterian sanctuary before raising a native-stone building in 1896. Its growth mirrors the maturing of a raw Central Texas county into a settled community.

Hargill, TX

Hargill grew after 1912 as a land company brought settlers for cattle ranching, and once a rail branch line spurred farm-tract sales in 1926, the community took shape. A small Baptist congregation that had met in a borrowed church from 1923 raised funds under Walter Holt and built this wood-frame church beside Highway 490 in 1926. Baptisms took place in nearby Bucy Lake until the building was moved and remodeled with a baptistry in 1956, keeping its original wooden floors.

Harper, TX

Organized in 1887 with just nine members, the First Baptist Church of Harper first met in the local school and a brush arbor before raising a wooden sanctuary and parsonage in 1897. The congregation was woven into community life — Harper High School even held classes in the church building in 1921 and again in 1941–42. A native-stone sanctuary followed in 1944, with a fellowship hall added in 1971.

Hearne, TX

Organized in 1869 as the Hearne Station Baptist Church with eleven charter members, this congregation grew through revivals and a gift of land from the incorporators of the Southern Pacific Railroad, raising its first sanctuary in 1877. It adopted the name First Baptist Church when a new auditorium's cornerstone was laid in 1907. Its founding beside a rail line typifies the church's role in a Reconstruction-era railroad town.

Hemphilll, TX

Founded in 1858 by five settler families as the town of Hemphill itself took shape, this Baptist congregation first gathered in a home and a schoolhouse before building its own sanctuary in the 1880s. It grew steadily through the late nineteenth century, especially after Reconstruction, and helped seed other churches across the area. Successive sanctuaries in 1910, 1962, and 1984 marked its enduring role as a community anchor.

Henderson, TX

Begun in 1845 by a pioneer missionary Baptist minister from Tennessee and reorganized in 1850 with just 21 members, this Henderson congregation shared its earliest meeting space with local Presbyterians. From those frontier beginnings it grew steadily over more than a century into one of the town's largest churches. Its founding coincides with the years when the Republic of Texas was joining the United States.
