First Baptist Church of Harper

Organized in 1887 with nine members, the First Baptist Church congregation initially met in the local school building and a brush arbor. A wooden sanctuary and parsonage were built in 1897. The congregation has been involved in community activities and mission work for many years. Harper High school held classes in the church building in 1921 and 1941-42. A native stone structure was erected in 1944, consisting of a sanctuary and Sunday School rooms. A fellowship hall annex was added in 1971. This church has been part of Harper history for over one hundred years.

The Story
Organized in 1887 with just nine members, the First Baptist Church of Harper first met in the local school and a brush arbor before raising a wooden sanctuary and parsonage in 1897. The congregation was woven into community life — Harper High School even held classes in the church building in 1921 and again in 1941–42. A native-stone sanctuary followed in 1944, with a fellowship hall added in 1971.

Harper Presbyterian Church
Harper, TX
Founded in 1881 as the Barnett Spring Presbyterian Church, this Hill Country congregation began in a schoolhouse before moving to Harper in 1901, where members raised a simple frame church on donated land. A bell was hung in 1903, and over the decades the building did double duty—housing the Harper School in 1906 and again in the 1940s and welcoming other denominations to worship.
Captain Joseph A. Tivy
Kerrville, TX
Joseph A. Tivy came to Texas from Canada in 1837 and served as a Texas Ranger before joining the 1849 California Gold Rush, where he ran a hotel and sat in the state legislature. Returning to Texas, he fought in the Civil War, rose to captain, and became a surveyor, rancher, and legislator before serving as Kerrville's first mayor in 1889, donating land for the city schools. He and his family are buried on nearby Tivy Mountain.
Durst House
Fredericksburg, TX
Carl Durst arrived in the German settlement country of the Texas Hill Country in 1873 and started with a single-room cabin, adding on as his family and fortunes grew. The house expanded room by room over the decades—including an 1896 stone addition that sometimes housed teachers for the nearby Cherry Mountain School, on land the Dursts had donated. What survives is less a single building than a family's life told in wood and stone.
Market Square (Mark Platz)
Fredericksburg, TX
From Fredericksburg's founding in 1846, Market Square—Marktplatz to the German settlers—stood at the town's center, then still ringed by heavy forest. The octagonal Vereins Kirche rose the next year in the middle of Main Street, serving at once as church, school, meeting hall, and a refuge in case of raids, while a jail and public schoolhouse followed in the 1850s. Rebuilt in the 1930s as a pioneer memorial, the church became the county's first museum and library, and the square remains the community's gathering place.
