First Christian Church of Brenham

Organized with 18 members in 1877, this congregation grew out of the early missionary efforts of A. J. Bush and W. J. Jones. Many prominent Washington County settlers were among its earliest members. The fellowship worshiped at various locations until this sanctuary was completed in 1898. Constructed by noted local builder Alex Griffin, the Gothic revival church building features round arched and lancet windows and an elaborate tower.

The Story
Growing out of the missionary work of A. J. Bush and W. J. Jones, this congregation organized with 18 members in 1877 and counted many prominent Washington County settlers among its early ranks. The fellowship worshiped in various places until its sanctuary was finished in 1898. Built by noted local craftsman Alex Griffin, the Gothic Revival church features round-arched and lancet windows and an elaborate tower.

First Baptist Church
Brenham, TX
Organized in 1846 as New Year's Creek Church at a schoolhouse in the Allcorn area, this congregation was founded by Judge R. E. B. Baylor, W. W. Buster, and Hosea Garrett. In 1848—the year the Texas Baptist Convention formed—Baylor University's first president, the Rev. Henry L. Graves, became its pastor. The church moved to Brenham in 1853 and took its present name, later rebuilding after a 1952 fire.
Giddings-Wilkin House
Brenham, TX
Jabez Deming Giddings, a Pennsylvania lawyer and civic leader, bought this Brenham land in 1837 and built a home of hand-hewn cypress boards—crowned by an unusual rooftop rainwater reservoir—before his 1843 marriage to Ann Tarver. Remodeled about 1870 and sold to the Wilkin family in 1871, it sheltered them until 1942. Slated for demolition in 1972, the house was rescued and restored by the county's heritage society.
Brenham Presbyterian Church
Brenham, TX
Brenham Presbyterian Church was founded in 1877 by the Rev. Warner B. Riggs and a small band of charter members, and within three years its rolls topped fifty names and a sanctuary rose on West Main Street. Financial hardship once forced the church to close for eight years, but the congregation endured and kept serving the community. Since 1951 it has worshipped in a sanctuary originally built in 1913 by the Fourth Street Methodist Church.
Thomas Deye Owings
Brenham, TX
Born near Baltimore in 1776 to a prosperous planter and ironmaster family, Thomas Deye Owings built a fortune in Kentucky's Bourbon Iron Works, founded Owingsville, and even laid an "Iron Road" to ship his goods. Commissioned a colonel in the War of 1812, he led the 28th U.S. Infantry and supplied ammunition for the Battle of New Orleans. Later he backed the Texas Revolution, financing companies of soldiers—roughly eighty of whom, including his son Robert, died at Goliad—and settling near Brenham, where he died in 1853.
