Captain Charles Welhausen
Shiner, TX
Born in Hanover, Germany, in 1835, Charles Welhausen immigrated through the Port of Galveston in 1843 and grew up in the German communities of Cat Spring and High Hill. He enlisted in the Confederate army, was cited for gallantry at the 1864 Battle of Calcasieu Pass, and rose to captain, later serving Fayette County as commissioner, justice of the peace, and legislator. After moving to Shiner in 1890 he founded a bank and, in 1911, donated this site to the city for a park.
