Albany, TX

William Ivy Cook and his wife Matilda built up a sprawling Shackelford County ranch in the late 19th century, and Cook famously boasted he could drink from his hat all the oil beneath his land. After his death, Matilda leased the acreage, and a 1926 well struck oil at just 1,241 feet, flowing a thousand barrels a day and opening one of the region's most remarkable shallow fields. Pioneering low-pressure gas injection here in 1927 advanced recovery methods worldwide, and the oil wealth funded a Fort Worth hospital.

Walker County, TX

Baptists in this corner of Walker County organized in 1901, first meeting at the Guinea Glade School with help from circuit-riding pastor Elisha E. Day. In 1903 charter member Cisely Cook Rose donated this spring-fed site, asking that the church honor her late husband, John William Cook, who died in the Civil War in 1864. A wooden sanctuary rose by 1912 and a new building followed in 1945, but the original spring still marks the revered ground.

Rusk, TX

Named for early Nacogdoches settler Joseph T. Cook, this site grew up around a frontier fort built by a military company under Captain Black—a stronghold, the marker notes, that was never attacked. James Cook added a store and blacksmith shop, and a village of some 250 people had gathered here by 1846. After the county seat was established at nearby Rusk, the residents moved away and the settlement faded.

Gainesville, TX

Created in 1848 and organized the next year, Cooke County honors William G. Cooke (1808–1847), a soldier of the Texas Revolution and the young republic. Cooke captained the "New Orleans Greys" in 1835, served as assistant inspector general at San Jacinto in 1836, joined the ill-fated Santa Fe Expedition of 1841, and held high offices including Secretary of War and Marine. Gainesville became the county seat.

Gainesville, TX

Settlement of the area now known as Cooke County began in late 1845, at the very moment Texas was joining the United States, and the county was formally created by the state legislature in 1848. It took its name from William G. Cooke, a Quartermaster General of the Republic of Texas who had fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in the 1836 war for Texas independence. The courthouse this marker commemorates stood at the civic heart of that new county seat, the place where a frontier community organized its government and law.

Gainesville, TX

In 1913 Gainesville librarian Lillian Gunter and the women of the XLI literary club won a Carnegie grant to build a library, but Gunter's real crusade was bigger: she wanted library service for people living beyond city limits. Working with state representative George W. Dayton and the Texas Library Association, she helped pass the County Library Law in 1917, and by 1920 Gainesville had turned its library over to the county—creating one of the first county libraries in Texas.

Gainesville, TX

Though Cooke County voted against secession, it became a Confederate military hub, raising nine units and living under constant threat of Federal or Indian attack along the Red River frontier. Colonel William C. Young led men to seize Indian Territory forts in 1861, and residents forted homes, made cloth and munitions, and fed the war effort with cattle, grain, and salt. Organized in 1863, the Second Frontier Regiment—"Bourland's Border Regiment" under Col. James Bourland—patrolled the border alongside Confederate Cherokee and Seminole troops and Gen. Stand Watie's brigade.

Liberty, TX

This Methodist burial ground was established in 1846, in the first years after Texas joined the Union, when Liberty County was still a sparsely settled corner of the young state. Church-affiliated cemeteries like this one anchored frontier communities, serving as gathering places of faith and memory for pioneer families. It carries a Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

Cooks Point, TX

Cooks Point took root about 1840 where a colonial road from the southeast met the old San Antonio Road, a natural crossroads in the earliest years of the Republic of Texas. Settler Gabriel Jackson kept a two-story log cabin trading post here, and the community took its name from surveyor Silas L. Cooke, who mapped much of the surrounding land. It endures today as a rural village.

Cooks Point, TX

This congregation formed in 1881 to serve the German-speaking families settling Burleson County, organized largely through the efforts of Anna Duewall, who had arrived with her family only a year before. Known first as the German Methodist Church and led by the Rev. Jacob Ott, the fellowship met in members' homes until it built a sanctuary in 1883 and later took the name Cooks Point.

Howard County, MD

During the Gettysburg Campaign of June 1863, Confederate cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart swept through central Maryland on the long ride that separated him from Lee's main army. At Cooksville on June 29, Stuart's troopers brushed aside a body of Maryland militia and pressed on toward Hood's Mill and Westminster. The brief clash was one of many skirmishes marking the army's march toward Pennsylvania.

Canton, TX

Cool Springs was named for the dozen springs and seeps around a spot that also divides the Trinity, Sabine, and Neches watersheds. After 1850 it became a favored resting place on the road from Canton to Athens, drawing settlers to a nearby gin, and by the late 1800s it supported churches, a school, stores, and a post office under the name Tundra. Shifting agriculture eventually hollowed the community out, and its residents have dwindled to a memory.

Houston, TX

When the streetcar suburb of Houston Heights took shape in the 1890s, its founders made schooling an early priority. Community leaders Daniel and Helen Cooley financed a one-room school that opened in 1894 and, driven by explosive neighborhood growth, ballooned into a sixteen-room Georgian-style building by 1912. Absorbed into the Houston Independent School District after the Heights merged with the city in 1918, the school served generations of children — surviving a 1961 fire — until it closed in 1980.

Fredericksburg, VA

In 1927 Congress authorized the creation of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park to preserve the ground where some of the Civil War's bloodiest fighting took place. The region around Fredericksburg saw four major battles—Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House—between 1862 and 1864, leaving tens of thousands of casualties. On October 19, 1928, President Calvin Coolidge personally dedicated the start of work on the memorial, marking the federal commitment to protect these hallowed grounds for future generations.

Gila County, AZ

Built between 1927 and 1928 and dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge himself in 1930, Coolidge Dam impounded the Gila River to create San Carlos Lake. The reservoir drowned the old San Carlos Apache settlement, whose people were relocated north to New San Carlos; when the water runs low, the foundations and a concrete marker over the old burial ground still emerge. It stands as both an engineering feat and a monument to displacement.

Valley Mills, TX

The Coon Creek community grew out of the older Cyrus settlement, the earliest in southeastern Bosque County, where Temple Spivey bought Brazos River land in 1853. Within a few years John Jackson Smith established a plantation, a school opened in a one-room log cabin, and a shared cemetery took root. By 1883 the settlement split into Smith Bend and Coon Creek, and its school, church, and the two-story "Pie" Bonds house still knit the community together.

Brooklyn Park, MN

This marker tells the story of the Coon Rapids Dam on the Mississippi River, built in 1913 to harness the great river's flow. Early-20th-century dams like this brought hydroelectric power and river control to a rapidly industrializing region, reshaping how communities used one of America's central waterways.

Pleasanton, TX

Chartered on March 27, 1871, this Royal Arch Masons chapter grew out of the Master Masons of Pleasanton's own lodge and the surrounding community. Members first gathered in the upper floor of the Isaac Cooper home, then above the Cooper Brothers store, before a dedicated Masonic Hall was finally built in 1961. The 1971 marker honors a century of the chapter's fraternal life.

Denton, TX

Baptists in the Cooper Creek community were gathering to worship as early as 1872, near where the church stands today. In 1916 L.F. "Tom" Collins donated land for a sanctuary completed the next year; a new steeple and entrance came in 1961, and the present sanctuary rose in 2000 on the original site. For well over a century the congregation — which still counts descendants of the founding families — has anchored the community.

Denton, TX

Begun by settlers such as the Farris and Skaggs families who reached northeast Denton County in the 1860s, Cooper Creek Cemetery was formally deeded in 1878 and is one of the last traces of a vanished rural community. Its earliest marked grave dates to 1872, and it holds early trustees, a Confederate cavalryman, and a decorated World War II airman. Notably, the burial ground was never segregated by race or religion — Hispanic families like the Menchacas and Villanuevas rest beside their Anglo neighbors.

Denton, TX

Families were settling the Cooper Creek area of Denton County before the Civil War, and when Texas created a county school system in 1876 the community organized its own one-room school for 39 pupils. A larger four-room building followed in 1919, complete with wood stoves, a well, and a three-acre garden. More than a schoolhouse, it hosted plays, revivals, and prohibition lectures — and in the 1918 smallpox epidemic a local doctor used it to treat stricken children.

Cooper, TX

When the railroad reached Cooper in 1895, a quiet Delta County town of some 300 people was transformed almost overnight, its population topping 1,000 the very next year. This Spanish Revival brick depot, built in 1913 for the Texas Midland Railroad, handled the passenger traffic along the line's 130-mile run between Paris and Ennis. After the railroad shut down in 1934 the building found new life during World War II as a cannery, where workers packed chicken for troop rations stamped '4P,' and in 1967 it became a local history museum.

Woodville, TX

Built in 1850, this Woodville home belonged to Samuel Bronson Cooper (1850–1918), who rose to serve as a United States Congressman from Texas. In 1903 the house passed to S. H. Reid, and the Reid family lived in it continuously for generations before it was restored in the twentieth century. Recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1968, it links a small East Texas town to national politics. The home stands as a well-preserved example of mid-nineteenth-century Texas domestic architecture.

Mt. Pleasant, TX

The Cooper and Ellis families came from Tennessee and settled this Titus County land in the 1850s. William Cooper deeded two acres around the earliest graves for a church and cemetery, and a modest frame sanctuary — hipped roof, double-door entry — served the Cooper's Chapel Church of Christ from the 1890s until 1980. A springtime "Decoration Day" begun early in the community's life still draws hundreds each year, honoring pioneers and veterans of wars from the Civil War to Vietnam.

Copeville, TX

Kentucky-born John Miles Cope settled in Collin County in 1848 and helped organize this farming community—first called Black Spot—in the 1850s, becoming its first postmaster in 1878. When the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1886, the town shifted a mile northeast to trackside, becoming a shipping point for farm produce and prized bois d'arc timber. Copeville grew to about 300 residents and in 1921 gained one of the nation's early female postmasters, Elizabeth Pearce.

White Pine County, NV

The great open-pit copper mines of eastern Nevada, including the Liberty Pit — the largest in the state — lie just south of this point, and through the first half of the twentieth century the district produced nearly a billion dollars in copper, gold, and silver. The huge mounds on the landscape are waste rock stripped away to reach the ore. Two miles east, near Lane City, the Elijah became the first mine of the Robinson Mining District; Lane City, first called Mineral City, was settled in 1869 and grew to some 400 people, with a hotel, a stage station, and the Ragsdale Station.

Gustine, TX

Founded in 1854 as Troy and later renamed Cora, this vanished town became Comanche County's first seat in 1856, its government run from a log-cabin courthouse. When the county seat moved to Comanche in 1859, Cora emptied out, and today only its cemetery—the oldest in the county—remains. It stands as an example of the many once-important Texas towns erased by shifting boundaries, railroads, and changing economies.

Temple, TX

Opened in May 1953, the Cora Anderson Negro Hospital gave Temple's growing African American community access to modern medical care just two blocks from Scott & White, which had previously been denied to them. Governed by an advisory board with equal Black and white membership and supported by donors including trustee Lyndon B. Johnson, the hospital was named for its largest individual donor, Cora Woods Campbell Anderson. It served until December 1963, when Scott & White integrated its facilities, and the building continues today as a public health clinic.

Kyle, TX

Cora Frances Jackman, born in 1853, was the daughter of Confederate general and later U.S. Marshal Sidney Drake Jackman, who settled his family in Hays County in 1865. She married Chauncey Donalson of the sprawling Live Oak Springs Ranch, and after his death commissioned this house in 1913 from a mail-order architectural plan book. The two-story residence blends Queen Anne and Classical Revival details—cross gables, Ionic columns, bay windows—and has changed little since the 1930s.

Castroville, TX

In 1844 the empresario Henri Castro planted a colony of Alsatian immigrants on the Medina River west of San Antonio, and Castroville still wears that Old-World heritage in its steep-roofed stone cottages. Jean Baptiste Cordier, one of those first settlers, raised this dwelling from local limestone with three rooms below and an attic above — a modest but sturdy piece of the frontier. Over the decades it passed through the hands of a blacksmith, a shoemaker, and the Tschirhart family, its shared occupancy a snapshot of how tight-knit these pioneer households were. Restored by later descendants, it earned recognition as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1976.

Jacksonville, TX

Organized in June 1881 through the efforts of Obediah Meador and his family, this Cherokee County congregation began with a dozen members and his son, the Rev. John Benjamin Meador, as its first pastor. Charter members deeded land in the 1890s, and the first sanctuary rose around 1900 as the church wove itself into several Baptist associations over the decades. The congregation still worships in the building it raised in 1950.

Grand Saline, TX

In the piney farmland of Van Zandt County, Corinth grew up in the mid-1800s as a self-contained frontier community, complete with gin, grist mill, blacksmith, sawmill, stores, and a log schoolhouse that also sheltered the Baptist congregation. A school stood here as early as 1849, and a post office served the town from 1888 to 1906. Today only the church and cemetery remain, the latter holding early settlers and several Civil War veterans, including the congregation's first recorded pastor, Rev. Thomas McAdams Post.

Stephenville, TX

In 1880, North Carolina native Dr. William Wallace McNeill and his wife Elizabeth Ann deeded land to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for a church, school, and cemetery. The burial ground is the last surviving trace of the vanished Corinth community, with an unknown number of unmarked graves from the late 1800s. Its oldest marked grave is that of Confederate soldier F. J. Simpson, who died in 1899, and later burials include twice-honored Texas State Artist Ethel Lewallen.

Grand Saline, TX

Land for this cemetery was deeded in 1886 by James Richardson, on whose grant the Corinth community had grown, with the oldest legible stone dating to 1874. Among those buried here are six known Civil War veterans and members of the founding families whose fieldstones and cedar trees still mark the earliest graves. The renowned aviator Wiley Post grew up in the Corinth community, and his parents, grandparents, and other kin — including his circuit-preacher grandfather, Rev. Thomas M. Post — rest here.

Linden vicinity, TX

This graveyard grew from a four-acre gift of land made by Ephraim and Mary Watson to the Corinth Baptist Church of Almira in 1876, with its earliest marked grave belonging to an infant who died in 1878. Among its marked and unmarked graves lie veterans of the Civil War through Vietnam, spanning generations of one corner of Cass County. It remained in active use into the twenty-first century.

Temple, TX

Corinth Missionary Baptist Church traces to Temple Chapel Baptist Church, organized around 1881 as one of the area's earliest African American congregations, formed as Black laborers migrated to the new railroad town of Temple. After a 1908 fire, members regrouped under the Corinth name in 1913 and built anew in 1916. Across the twentieth century the church became a hub for youth programs, civil rights education, and scholarships.

Parker, TX

Pioneer settler C.A. McMillen founded the Corinth Society Church on August 2, 1846, and it is thought to be the oldest continuing congregation in Collin County. Charter families like the Murphys, Wilkinses, and Maxwells first met in a schoolhouse, then in homes after the Civil War, before building successive churches and finally a 1923 sanctuary on land donated on Parker Road. Refurbished in the 1980s, the church has served the Parker area for more than 150 years.

Denton, TX

Soon after the Civil War, physician and lay preacher Thomas Ball and his family came from Missouri and settled land that became Corinth. They donated a graveyard already in use to the Primitive Baptist Church at Shiloh, where William Garrison's 1870 grave is the earliest marked. Native sandstone markers and creek-harvested mussel shells still distinguish the old burial ground.

Jarrell, TX

Corn Hill was among the earliest communities in Williamson County, named by county judge John E. King for the hilltop home and cornfield he built in 1852. A stop on the stage line from Georgetown to Fort Gates, it gained a post office in 1855 and grew into a farming village with academies, a college, churches, cotton gins, and even a telephone company. When the Bartlett Western Railway bypassed it in 1909, steam engines hauled homes and businesses two miles north to the new town of Jarrell, leaving Corn Hill a dispersed reminder of its agrarian past.

Merkel, TX

Cornelia Fort, born into an affluent Nashville family in 1919, discovered flying at twenty-one and within a week had logged over 2,000 miles; by 1941 she was an instructor. She was aloft with a student over Hawaii when Japanese planes struck Pearl Harbor, landing safely under fire, and soon joined Nancy Harkness Love's Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. On March 21, 1943, ferrying a BT-13 in formation toward Dallas, her plane was struck and went down in Mulberry Canyon — making her, records indicate, the first American woman pilot to die on active military duty.

Stephenville, TX

Born in Dallas in 1875, Cornelia Tyler trained at Prairie View Normal School and Hearne Academy before becoming the principal and sole teacher of Stephenville's school for African American children, where she taught for nearly twenty years. She married Civil War veteran John Graves and continued teaching in Amarillo after the couple moved for his health. In 1951 a Stephenville elementary school was named Cornelia Graves in her honor.

Liberty, TX

Cornelius De Vore, born in New Orleans in 1819, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto — the decisive 1836 clash in which Sam Houston's small army routed Santa Anna and secured Texas independence. Men like De Vore, many of them young and newly arrived, made up the citizen force that fought in that brief but pivotal campaign. His grave in Liberty County honors one of the founding generation of the Republic of Texas.

Frankfort, KY

This leafy quarter of old Frankfort earned its nickname from the astonishing concentration of national figures who once lived within a few blocks—among them Supreme Court justice John Marshall Harlan, statesman John J. Crittenden, senators John and James Brown, several Kentucky governors, and admiral Hugh Rodman. Over a century and more, judges, senators, diplomats, and military leaders called this small neighborhood home. Few street corners in America have sent so many of their residents into the nation's highest offices.

Hughes Springs, TX

Burials began at this Cass County site in the 1850s, though the oldest legible stone marks the 1880 grave of Mary Frances Hampton. Robert Dunlap gave nine acres for the cemetery and the adjacent Hamell's Chapel Methodist Church, with other families donating land as well. Known by several names, it was renamed 'Cornett' after the Cornett Post Office opened in 1901 and now holds roughly 295 marked and 110 unmarked graves.

Jarrell, TX

Established in 1886 on two acres deeded to Cornhill Masonic Lodge No. 567 by Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Bridges, this Williamson County cemetery became the resting place of community founders, three Civil War soldiers, and veterans of later wars. A cemetery association has cared for the grounds since 1953, and it has grown to about six acres.

San Angelo, TX

Dr. Boyd Cornick had survived tuberculosis himself, and in 1907 he built thirty cottages here to treat others with the methods he trusted: rest, a dry warm climate, and careful diet — a sharp break from period remedies like hot cane juice, honey and wine, or even arsenic. Patients traveled to San Angelo from across the country. Cornick went on to draft Texas' first sanitary code and helped bring about the state's first tuberculosis sanitarium at nearby Carlsbad.

Mansfield, PA · est. 1983

Completed in 1840, the Corning & Blossburg Railroad was one of the earliest railroads in the Northeast, running from Corning, New York, down to the coal fields around Blossburg, Pennsylvania. Built by the Tioga Navigation Company, it stitched together the Chemung Canal and the Erie Railroad with the region's mines, moving coal to distant markets. It marked the moment when rails began to supplement and surpass the canals of the young industrial age.

Houston County, TX

Corinth Cemetery is the last physical trace of several vanished Houston County settlements, among them Corinth, a community that gathered in the late 1850s around a Methodist church and school. The graveyard became the final resting place for residents of Corinth, Old Randolph, Old Zion, Kennard, and Center Hill, with its oldest documented grave dating to 1864. The Corinth Cemetery Association has tended the grounds since the 1940s.

Oil City, PA · est. 2017

Cornplanter (1738–1836) was a Seneca war leader turned diplomat who fought for the British during the Revolution, then chose to bind the Iroquois Confederacy to the fragile new United States. In the tense years that followed, he mediated between Native nations and encroaching settlers, seeking peace even as he grew disillusioned when treaties failed to treat his people fairly. In 1796 Pennsylvania granted him and his heirs three tracts of land, including one near present-day Oil City.

Cornwall, PA · est. 1947

The Cornwall Banks were among the richest iron deposits in the world and the oldest continuously worked mine in the New World, yielding ore for more than two centuries. From colonial furnaces that helped arm the Revolution to the industrial age, this Lebanon County hillside fed a steady stream of Pennsylvania iron — long described as the greatest such ore body east of Lake Superior.

Cornwall, PA · est. 1948

Peter Grubb raised this charcoal-fired iron furnace in 1742, tapping the rich ore of the Cornwall hills to smelt pig iron in an age when American industry was still in its infancy. Under later owners—most famously the Coleman family—the works ran for more than 140 years, outlasting nearly every one of its colonial-era rivals. Preserved as a state historic site, it survives as the best intact example of an early Pennsylvania ironmaking plantation.

Cornwall, PA · est. 1948

Built by ironmaster Peter Grubb in 1742, this charcoal furnace drew on the abundant iron ore of the Cornwall hills and stayed in blast until 1883—an extraordinary run of nearly a century and a half. It smelted iron through the colonial era, the Revolution, and deep into the industrial age before finally falling cold. Today the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission cares for the site as a monument to the state's ironmaking heritage.

West Cornwall Township, PA · est. 2005

Founded in 1742 by Peter Grubb beside a rich vein of iron ore and vast charcoal-making forests, Cornwall Iron Furnace grew into a self-sufficient industrial village complete with an ironmaster's mansion and workers' homes. Its furnaces poured pig iron, cast goods, and cannon for the Revolutionary War before passing to Robert Coleman in 1798 and running until 1883. Remarkably, the works survive fully intact nearby — a rare window into early American ironmaking.

Grover, NC

In January 1781 General Lord Cornwallis crossed into North Carolina near this spot, launching his second invasion of the state as he chased the American forces of Daniel Morgan and Nathanael Greene. The pursuit stretched his army thin and led toward the costly clash at Guilford Courthouse.

Lubbock, TX

Opened in 1965, Coronado High School takes its name from Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, the Spanish conquistador who in 1541 crossed the Llano Estacado in search of the fabled golden city of Quivira. Guided by a Plains Indian the Spanish called "The Turk," Coronado's expedition wandered for days through West Texas, perhaps passing near present-day Lubbock. The school's name ties a modern city to the first Europeans to traverse its high plains.

Sandoval County, NM

These are the ancient ruins of Kuaua Pueblo, an ancestral Puebloan village of the Tiwa people that thrived along the Rio Grande for centuries before European arrival. In the winter of 1540-41 the Spanish expedition of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado passed through this stretch of river, giving the modern historic site its name. Excavations here uncovered rare painted kiva murals among the most significant found in the Southwest.

Floydada, TX

Between 1540 and 1542, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado led a vast expedition—more than a thousand people and thousands of animals—north from Mexico chasing rumors of golden cities. Their exact path across the southern plains has long puzzled historians, since surviving accounts are brief and contradictory. In the spring of 1541 the company camped in a wide canyon, and chain mail, crossbow points, and other European artifacts later unearthed around Blanco Canyon helped archaeologists confirm that Coronado passed this way.

Somerville, MA

Donald L. Curtis was a corporal in the United States Army, born in September 1944 and lost in June 1969 at just 24 years old — his short life spanning the height of the Vietnam War era. Across Massachusetts and much of the country in these years, cities and towns set aside street corners, squares, and plaques to honor hometown servicemembers who did not come home, turning an ordinary intersection into a place of remembrance. This memorial marks one such young man from the Somerville community, his name and rank kept in public view for the neighbors and generations who pass by.

Corpus Christi, TX

When Pearl Harbor drew the United States into World War II, German U-boats made open-water shipping deadly, and the sheltered Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, "the Canal," became a vital protected route for Corpus Christi's oil. First envisioned in 1905 and finally secured through easements in 1930, the inland canal carried more than 900 oil-laden vessels toward the East Coast by 1944 and over a million tons of cargo by war's end. Its traffic and the growth it spurred helped transform Corpus Christi and the surrounding counties.

Corpus Christi, TX

The Corpus Christi Cathedral, seat of its diocese since 1940, replaced fire-damaged Saint Patrick's on land donated by the prominent Kenedy family. Architect C.L. Monnot designed a lofty structure evoking the early Spanish missions, with asymmetrical bell towers, painted terra-cotta domes, and art-glass windows. On the advice of Pope Pius XII, it was named for its host city—whose Latin name means "Body of Christ"—and dedicated on July 17, 1940.
