Corinth Cemetery

Land for this cemetery was first deeded in 1886 by James Richardson (1814-1887), on whose land grant the Corinth community had developed. Over the years, additional acreage for the graveyard has been given by members of the D. D. Richardson, Oliver, Carroll, and Davis families. The oldest legible tombstone in the Corinth Cemetery bears a death date of Jan. 14, 1874. Many of the headstones have weathered and deteriorated so that they are illegible, while others have disappeared over the years. Some of the early burial sites were marked only with fieldstones or by the planting of Cedar trees. Six known Civil War veterans are buried here. Early settlers in the Corinth community whose family names are common in the cemetery are Crestman, Yoes, Rawson, King, Cox, and Blair. Renowned aviator Wiley Post (1898-1935) grew up in the Corinth community and attended the Baptist Church. Several members of his family, including his mother, father, brother, and grandparents, are buried in the Corinth Cemetery. His grandfather, the Rev. Thomas M. Post (1843-1931), a well-known circuit preacher, founded many area churches and served as an early pastor of the Corinth Baptist fellowship. Texas Sesquicentennial 1836-1986

The Story

Among those buried here are six known Civil War veterans and members of the founding families whose fieldstones and cedar trees still mark the earliest graves. The renowned aviator Wiley Post grew up in the Corinth community, and his parents, grandparents, and other kin — including his circuit-preacher grandfather, Rev. Thomas M. Post — rest here.

Corinth Baptist Church and School
Grand Saline, TX
In the piney farmland of Van Zandt County, Corinth grew up in the mid-1800s as a self-contained frontier community, complete with gin, grist mill, blacksmith, sawmill, stores, and a log schoolhouse that also sheltered the Baptist congregation. A school stood here as early as 1849, and a post office served the town from 1888 to 1906. Today only the church and cemetery remain, the latter holding early settlers and several Civil War veterans, including the congregation's first recorded pastor, Rev. Thomas McAdams Post.
Oakland Community Cemetery
Canton, TX
The oldest marked grave at Oakland belongs to Oscar Lee, born and dead on the same November day in 1882, and the community's story is written in the deeds that followed: a schoolhouse in 1885 that doubled as a Sunday church, a cemetery acre from M. M. Burks in 1887, and Methodist church land from Lizzie Currey McMahon in 1894. In its prime Oakland held churches, a school, and a cotton gin owned by John T. Currey, a four-term member of the Texas House. The dozens of family names on its stones — and Sabrina Reid, believed to be of American Indian descent — make the cemetery a running record of who lived and worked here.
Starr Cemetery and School
Canton, TX
In 1886 James F. Starr, acting for landowner Sarah F. Clapp, deeded two acres here for a community school, and within a few years the ground was also serving as a burial place — the earliest marked grave being the infant son of B. A. and Ora Monroe, who died in 1889. A formal cemetery followed in 1911 when A. C. White and his wife sold the adjoining land. The school and cemetery knit together the scattered Starr, Todd Hill, and Wentworth communities, and among those laid to rest here is Civil War soldier Joseph Staley.
Pruitt Baptist Church and Pruitt Community
Pruitt, TX
The town of Pruitt began in the 1880s, named for its first postmistress Adelia Pruitt, and grew to include a cotton gin, general store, school, and several churches. In 1896 Malinda Ashworth and E. R. Crocker organized the Pruitt Baptist Church, which built its first sanctuary in 1912. Rebuilt and expanded over the decades, the congregation still serves the community.
