Post, TX

Built in 1928, Post's high school wove native Garza County stones from the town's first 1909 schoolhouse into its lower walls—an early act of historic preservation led by Superintendent John E. Watson, a World War I veteran of the famed Rainbow Division. Backed by the PTA, Watson pushed a school bond through despite hard times. As the town grew, the building became Post Junior High School.

Harford County, MD

In the young republic's earliest years, the newly organized Methodist Episcopal Church set out to plant education alongside faith, and in 1785 its founding bishops opened Cokesbury College at Abingdon, Maryland — named for the two men who led it. Championed as the first Methodist college in the world, the school rose on the old post road that had carried travelers and mail through Harford County since the 1600s. Its life was brief: a decade after opening, fire consumed the building in December 1795, and the ambitious experiment ended in ashes 175 yards east of where this marker stands.

Post, TX

Built in 1912 by the Double U Company of cereal magnate C. W. Post, this was the first hospital in its corner of West Texas and boasted remarkably modern facilities for its time — an X-ray laboratory, private rooms with steam heat, a diet kitchen, and nurses' training. It rose in the planned town Post created out of the ranchlands he bought on the plains. Its arrival brought medicine and modern comfort to a still-raw frontier region.

Exeter, NH

On the eve of the American Revolution, colonial towns built small, thick-walled 'powder houses' set safely apart from homes to store the community's gunpowder and munitions. This one went up in 1771 in Exeter, a town that would soon serve as New Hampshire's Revolutionary capital, where its provincial congress met and governed once royal authority collapsed. A marker like this points travelers across the river to the surviving structure—a modest building that speaks to how seriously townspeople took the business of arming and defending themselves in a tense pre-war decade.

San Antonio, TX

Early Spanish settlers first ground gunpowder here—charcoal from Hill Country wood, saltpeter scraped from bat guano in caves like Longhorn Cavern, and sulphur hauled by ox-cart from Mexico—to hunt game and defend against raids. The work was dangerous: even dampened powder sometimes sparked fires at the mill. During the Civil War the mill supplied powder to state troops, frontier defenders, and the home guard, worked by boys and men too old for military service.

Marshall, TX

This ground first served a Confederate gunpowder factory, and its burials began with enslaved people laid to rest on the mill's acreage. After the factory fell with the Confederacy in 1865, the land passed into private hands, and by 1880 a local mortician began recording graves here. The cemetery became the resting place of many of Marshall's Black leaders — educators, ministers, businesspeople, war veterans, and legislator David Abner among them.

Bluff Dale, TX

Dug around 1887 by the crew building the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad, this well was an early oasis for travelers and cattle herds. Once artesian, it lost its natural pressure after a nearby well was sunk to supply steam locomotives with water. Restored in 1965, it still stands ready for local residents in emergencies.

Town of Queensbury, NY

Long before it was absorbed into the modern town, this ground was set aside as a burying place by the Quaker families who settled the upper Hudson frontier in the eighteenth century. The Society of Friends favored plain, unadorned graveyards that reflected their belief in simplicity and equality, even in death. A weathered burial ground like this one is often the last visible trace of a founding community that shaped a region's earliest years.

Austin, TX

Limestone cut from this quarry was hauled by ox teams to Congress Avenue to build the 1853 Texas Capitol, one of Austin's first monumental public buildings. When that statehouse burned in 1881, stone salvaged from its ruins found new life in later Austin construction. The land itself had been granted to Tennessee native George Washington Davis for his service in the Texas Revolution and long remained the Davis family homestead.

Quintana, TX

Perched at the mouth of the Brazos River, Quintana passed through nearly every chapter of Texas history—an early village site, a port of entry under the Republic of Texas, and a strategic harbor during the Civil War. In the late 19th century it shipped cattle and cotton and blossomed into a fashionable summer colony, only to be largely swept away by the catastrophic 1900 hurricane. Today it endures as a quiet resort and fishing community.

Haskell, TX

The Wichita Valley Railroad built this depot in 1906 as it laid track into Haskell, and it soon bustled with shipments of cotton, cattle, and grain from the surrounding plains. At train time townspeople would gather to greet travelers and catch the latest news and gossip—the depot doubling as the community's window on the wider world. After passenger service ended in 1951, the building was preserved as a museum in 1963, still furnished with its original fixtures.

Childress, TX

When Childress landed the Fort Worth & Denver Railway shops and division offices, the town built this Spanish Mission Revival hall in 1903 as a recreation and hospitality center for railroad men. Civic leaders R.H. Norris and Dr. J.H. Cristler led the effort, and donors even included Helen Gould, philanthropic daughter of rail magnate Jay Gould. The YMCA left in 1934, and veterans' groups have owned the building since 1938.

San Ygnacio, TX

Old Ramireño stood on Porción 5, land granted to Don José Luis Ramírez by the King of Spain in 1784 as part of José de Escandón's colonization of Nuevo Santander. Ramírez, his wife María Bacilia Martínez, and their ten children crossed the Rio Grande to build a home here, and their descendants formed the community's core. The settlement saw the Mier Expedition camp there in 1842 and U.S. military activity during the border raids of 1916–17 before Falcon Reservoir forced its relocation in 1953, drowning the original stone ranch house.

Rio Grande City, TX

Kentucky-born Henry Clay Davis came to Texas in the late 1830s and served with Zachary Taylor's army during the Mexican-American War in 1846. Marrying into the prominent Garza family of the lower Rio Grande, he established a home around which Rio Grande City grew, fed by steamboat trade up from Brownsville and by the founding of nearby Ringgold Barracks in 1848. The town became the seat of Starr County.

Dallas, TX

This site has anchored Dallas County government since the log courthouse that followed the county's creation in 1846, replaced over the decades by ever-grander structures as fire after fire took its predecessors. The fifth of them, completed in 1892, is the Romanesque Revival landmark still known as the Old Red Courthouse — a massive pile of blue granite and red sandstone bristling with turrets, once crowned by a clock tower and a heavy bell.

Red Rock, TX

Red Rock grew up where the Austin–Port Lavaca stagecoach road crossed the Bastrop–Gonzales trail, a typical crossroads settlement of frontier Texas that shifted a mile east in 1892 to meet the new railroad. Its old cemetery holds more than 370 graves, including trail drivers and veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The first documented burial dates to 1864, though earlier homemade sandstone markers may have been lost.

Trinity, TX

Education in Trinity began humbly in 1872 with a one-room log schoolhouse near Cedar Grove Cemetery. The sturdy brick building known as "Old Red" rose here beginning in 1911 under Superintendent J. Woolam Bright, opening by 1915 in a prairie-style, T-plan form that housed every grade until a high school was added in 1928. An earlier frame schoolhouse on the site was relocated to serve the town's African American students—a reminder of segregated schooling. When demolition loomed in the 1990s, former students and citizens rallied to save the building for continued use.

Galveston, TX

When the University of Texas Medical Branch opened in Galveston in 1891, this massive Romanesque building was its entire campus — one structure, a young faculty, and an enrollment of just 23 students. Designed by celebrated Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton and dedicated on October 5, 1891, it was later named for Ashbel Smith, the pioneer surgeon and diplomat remembered as the 'Father of the University of Texas.' Its nickname, 'Old Red,' comes from the deep color of its brick and stone.

Texarkana, TX

Pioneer businessman George Fouke erected this distinctive triangular building in 1902, the same year New York's famous Flatiron rose, and its wedge shape earned it a similar nickname. Fouke was a driving force in Texarkana's lumbering, railroads, and electric power, and his building was among the first in town wired for electricity. Over the decades it served as offices, an apartment hotel, and later a medical building.

Gillett, TX

In 1869 German immigrant Carl Edward Riedel built a dam here to power his sawmill, gristmill, and cotton gin, and with fellow immigrant Max Krueger installed Karnes County's first steam cotton gin. A town called Riddleville quickly grew up around the works at a crossing of two frontier roads, boasting a post office by 1871 and ranking among the county's principal towns for over a decade. Renamed Gillett in 1905, the community was largely built from Riedel's own lumber, some of which still stands in local buildings.

Rio Grande City, TX

The hospital at Ringgold Barracks on the Rio Grande was a striking piece of frontier military architecture — Moorish in style, wrapped in wide porches trimmed with fifteen-foot arches, and built to the surgeon general's own plans. First occupied in November 1870, it cared for soldiers for seventy-five years until the post was inactivated in 1944. It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

Old River-Winfree, TX

Old River, a looping channel of the Trinity, drew some of the earliest pioneers to this corner of southeast Texas in the 1820s and 1830s, among them Robert and Eleanor Wiseman on land grants taken up in 1827. Fertile soil and open grassland made it a farming and ranching center whose hides, timber, and charcoal were shipped down to market in Galveston. That trade fostered shipbuilding firms, brick kilns, and ferry operations, seeding a pattern of settlement whose descendants still live in the area.

Somerset, TX

Organized in 1857 as Medina Baptist Church at Mann's Crossing, this congregation worshiped in homes and a schoolhouse before building a stone meetinghouse here in 1867–69, much of it laid by Massachusetts stonemason Elisha Briggs. In its early years four ordained ministers took unpaid turns in the pulpit, and the church's membership was racially integrated, with some of its Black members buried in honored graves in the cemetery. After the congregation relocated in 1892, the beloved "Old Rock" building was renovated in 1921 with help from a local oil company and renamed for the church.

Town of Clifton, WI

Begun in 1851 on land donated by pioneer settler Bosman Clifton in memory of his daughter, the Old Rock Church rose stone by stone through the labor of a young Wisconsin frontier community. Men and women worked side by side for years to complete it, a testament to how central a house of worship was to settlers carving farms out of the Grant County countryside. Its sturdy stone walls have outlasted the generation that built them.

Brownsboro, TX

The oldest grave in Old Rock Hill Cemetery is that of Thomas Clark, buried in 1851 on land still in the public domain, six years before A. J. Laymance received title to the surrounding survey. Here rest many of the pioneer families of the Horn Branch and Kickapoo Creek country, including namesake Martin Horn, a War of 1812 veteran and county commissioner, and Civil War soldiers. After bad-weather roads made the site unreachable, a new cemetery was opened nearby, and the last burial here came in 1913.

Santa Anna, TX

Claimed in 1857 under a Republic of Texas land certificate, this Coleman County tract passed through absentee owners before, by tradition, a squatter named John J. Brestow built a one-room stone cabin here in the 1870s, having come to the area for his health. Constructed of rock from the nearby Santa Anna Mountains, the house later sheltered tenant farmers before being restored by mid-20th-century owners. It stands today as a small museum of frontier life.

Mobeetie, TX

Built around 1875 for Wheeler County's first sheriff, Henry Fleming, from rock quarried nearby, this four-room house stood across the creek from Hidetown, a rough buffalo hunters' post. Considered a mansion in its raw surroundings, it even doubled as the seat of county business until a proper courthouse could be built.

Pleasanton, TX

Raised in 1874 from locally quarried red sandstone, the Old Rock Schoolhouse served Pleasanton as a free public school, a Baptist meeting house, and a summer teacher-training normal school. A storm cellar in the yard doubled as a refuge during Comanche raids, a reminder that classroom life here sat on an unsettled frontier. Later reincarnated as a store, residence, and apartments, it was eventually stripped back to its original stone and returned to teaching.

Sonora, TX

Built in 1904 to serve Sonora's growing population, this two-story Italianate schoolhouse was crafted by rockmason T. S. Hodges of Lockhart from native stone quarried east of town. It first housed the entire local school system and later served as a junior high and elementary school, gaining a complementary addition by the same mason in 1914.

Austin, TX

James Andrew Patton oversaw the building of this stone store in 1898, its walls laid by a German mason in the tradition of the early German rock buildings of central Texas. Patton had earlier ridden as a Texas Ranger in conflicts with the Comanches before becoming a civic leader and postmaster known fondly as 'the mayor of Oak Hill.' His family and others ran a general store here for years, with a Woodmen of the World lodge meeting upstairs.

Utopia, TX

Built in 1873 of native rock by stonemason Joe Hastler for owner R. H. Kincheloe, this was the first building in the Hill Country community of Utopia. Recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1967, it stands as a durable relic of the settlement's earliest days.

Chappell Hill, TX

Merchant John E. Glass built this sturdy masonry store in Chappell Hill in 1869, using thick sandstone walls, massive hand-hewn and pegged pine timbers, and doors and shutters fastened with square nails. Over its long life the building housed grocers and served as the town's post office, anchoring commerce and daily errands for the community.

Tilden, TX

Irish stonemason Pat Cavanaugh, aided by Dick Barker, built this sturdy stone store around 1865 in the settlement then known as Dog Town—later Tilden. During the wide-open, lawless years of the 1860s and 1870s it witnessed gun battles typical of a rough South Texas frontier town. It has been preserved since 1929 by owner Clifton Wheeler.

Junction, TX

Built in 1879 of local rock, this Junction store began as G. W. Ragsdill's general merchandise, anchoring a Hill Country town that also boasted his hotel and wagon yard. Over the years its upper floor hosted Masonic, Odd Fellows, and Woodmen lodges — and, in 1912, one of the town's first moving pictures. Its stone walls have quietly absorbed a century of small-town commerce and fellowship.

Nelsonville, TX

German immigrant August Roesler came to Texas in the 1850s and built a simple frame dwelling here in 1873 beside a busy public road, where it often sheltered travelers. After the family moved to a larger home and the first house burned in 1892, Roesler and his neighbors raised this board-and-batten farmhouse as a replica of the original.

Snyder, TX

This Baldwin locomotive honors the Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific, the short-line railroad that steamed into Snyder in 1908 and helped turn a dusty West Texas settlement into a thriving town. Built in Philadelphia in 1920 as a coal burner and later converted to oil, the engine was retired to a city park in 1956. It stands as a monument to the age when a spur of track meant survival and growth for the plains.

Jefferson, TX

Dating to 1854, the Old Rosebud Saloon stood in Jefferson when the town was a booming inland riverport and one of the busiest commercial hubs in antebellum Texas. Its rooms were remembered as a rendezvous for judges, lawyers, and rougher men alike—a snapshot of frontier social life. Partly burned in 1902 and restored in 1946, the building survived as a relic of the town's raucous heyday.

Round Rock, TX

In the mid-19th century, central Texas towns like Round Rock grew up around the overland stage lines and the great cattle trails that funneled travelers and drovers northward. A stagecoach inn here would have offered a meal, a bed, and fresh teams to passengers rattling through on the long haul between frontier settlements. Such stops were the highway rest areas of their day, knitting together a young and sparsely settled state.

Des Moines, WA

During Prohibition, Roy Olmstead ran one of the Puget Sound region's largest liquor-smuggling operations, earning the nickname "The Good Bootlegger" for refusing to let his men carry guns. On Thanksgiving Day 1925, federal agents arrested him in the raid on the Woodmont Dock recalled by this marker. His case became nationally significant, testing the limits of federal enforcement in the dry years of the 1920s.

Jacksonville, TX

After a rival railroad bypassed the area in 1873, local citizens rejoiced when the Rusk tram began running in 1875 with pine rails that warped and a top speed sometimes beaten by mule wagons. Its motley rolling stock included a used streetcar, three flatcars, and a steam engine called the "Cherokee," and passengers often had to help lift the train back onto its tracks along the 16-mile line to Jacksonville. Sold in 1879, the ramshackle tram had nonetheless done its job, drawing industry and growth to the region.

Folsom, CA

The Old Russville Ditch, constructed in 1897, is a surviving piece of the water-conveyance infrastructure that shaped the Sacramento foothills near Folsom. In California's gold country, hand- and horse-dug ditches carried water miles across the landscape to serve mining, milling, and farming — quiet feats of engineering that outlasted the operations they were built for.

Campobello, SC

In the days before paved highways, upcountry South Carolina was laced with wagon roads that carried farmers, drovers, and travelers between the Piedmont and the mountains. The Rutherford Road was one of these early overland routes, and this surviving stretch of old roadbed is a rare physical trace of how people and goods once moved through the Campobello area. Worn by generations of foot, hoof, and wheel, it recalls an era when a journey of a few counties was measured in days rather than hours.

San Antonio, TX

Built about 1890 by builder T.R. Hertzberg to a design by architect M.T. Eckles, this late Victorian house was purchased in 1909 by Judge Sidney J. Brooks, first judge of the 57th District Court. His son, Sidney Brooks Jr., became one of the first U.S. cadets killed while training for World War I aviation duty in 1917. San Antonio's Brooks Air Force Base was named in the young flier's honor.

Violet, TX

In the early 20th century, German Catholic farm families settling the community once called Land Siding — later Violet — organized their own parish and raised a modest frame building that doubled as church and schoolhouse. Enlarged and crowned with three towers in 1919, it anchored the little farming settlement for decades. When a larger church replaced it in 1952, the old structure was moved and eventually restored as a community museum.

Salado, TX

This burial ground came into use around 1852, about the time a post office opened at Salado Springs. In 1854 Col. Elijah Sterling C. Robertson bought a large tract that included the graveyard, part of the 100 acres he had donated to create Salado College and the town of Salado itself. Enlarged over the years through purchase and gift, and now supported by a permanent endowment, it has served generations of Salado's citizens.

Center, TX

Settlers from Alabama and Georgia came to the Old Salem community seeking farmland and timber, and by the 1870s and 1880s they were burying their dead beneath an old white oak here. A log building served as school and church by 1881, and land changed hands over the decades—school district to public, lumber company to cemetery—to shape the burial ground that remains. Shaded by tall pines and hardwoods, it preserves the older East Texas custom of grass-free mounded-dirt graves alongside many unmarked burials from epidemics and infant deaths.

Waller County, TX

This burial ground began as the family plot of T. B. White, whose wife Elizabeth and father-in-law Henry Kirby were laid to rest here in the 1850s. In 1853 White sold ten adjoining acres to the Salem Association for a Masonic lodge hall and academy, and the grounds soon became a public cemetery. Among those buried here are Jane McCullen, born in 1788, and Francis J. Cooke, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto.

Harrisburg, PA · est. 1968

When John Harris's settlement at the Susquehanna crossing was still a scattering of cabins, its first congregation gathered in a log meeting house raised in 1787 — the earliest church in what would become Pennsylvania's capital. Land set aside for worship by the Harris family anchored the community, and by 1822 a permanent brick sanctuary had replaced the logs. The marker traces the young town's spiritual and civic roots in the decades just after independence.

Tomball, TX

German immigrants who landed at Galveston in the 1840s and 1850s settled the Rosehill community and founded Salem Lutheran Church in 1852, worshipping first in homes and then in a church built on donated land in 1857. For generations the congregation kept its Old World customs — services in German, men seated on one side and women on the other — while building a parochial school, a cemetery, and successive sanctuaries into the twentieth century.

San Antonio, TX

George W. Brackenridge and his partners organized the San Antonio National Bank in 1866 as the city's first federally chartered bank, part of the new national banking system born of the Civil War. This limestone home for the bank, designed by New York architect Cyrus Eidlitz and completed in 1886, showed off Victorian confidence with Moorish arches, ornate ironwork, and a corner tower. The bank operated here until 1970.

Tilden, TX

Soon after Laredo's 1755 founding, the Spanish laid out a route across this arid country, following the water and grass that made travel possible between San Antonio and Laredo. For well over a century it carried notable travelers—an inspecting friar in 1768, Stephen F. Austin bound for Mexico City in 1822, a Mexican general surveying Anglo settlement in 1828, and military expeditions before and after the Civil War. Though abandoned once ranches were fenced and the railroad arrived in 1881, the old road is still visible on the open range.

El Paso, TX

This El Paso neighborhood took shape between 1908 and 1923, during a period of rapid growth in the city, as blocks of brick, stone, and wood apartment buildings rose with shared architectural character. Residents named it "San Francisco" for its hilly terrain, which reminded them of the California city. The name carried a double meaning: the district also lay along the old El Paso–San Francisco stage route that had crossed the region in the 1800s.

Coldspring, TX

Approved by the county commissioners in 1886 and finished the next year, this jail combined second-floor cells with ground-floor living quarters for the jailer and his family—a common arrangement in small Texas counties of the era. Its decorative brickwork and arched windows reflect the Victorian tastes of the 1880s. It served San Jacinto County until 1980 and is the last surviving building from Coldspring's original townsite.

San Antonio, TX

The springs at Old San Pedro, five miles from the city, were a favored camping ground long used by U.S. troops during the Mexican War of 1846–48 and by picnickers and stump-speakers in the 1850s. When federal forces in Texas surrendered to the Confederacy in 1861, the site briefly held prisoners of war in dugouts and brush arbors. Thereafter it served as a staging camp for Confederate soldiers bound for the western frontier, the Arizona–New Mexico campaign, and camps of instruction for raw recruits.

Mexia, TX

After Emancipation in 1865, formerly enslaved people across Limestone County built independent lives and communities, and those who settled here—among them Sawney Henry and Davey Medlock—founded the Sandy M.E. Church and the Sandy, or Oak Grove, community. This ground became their burial place, tended by the 1900s through a church, school, and graveyard association. Most who rest here were once enslaved, with the last known burial in 1943.

Los Angeles, CA

The Old Santa Susana Stage Road carried Butterfield-era stagecoaches and travelers over the rugged pass between the San Fernando and Simi valleys from 1859 to 1890. Its steep grade was one of the most difficult segments on the route north from Los Angeles, worn into the sandstone by decades of wheels and hooves. In 1939 the Native Daughters of the Golden West placed this marker to preserve the memory of that overland era.

New Braunfels, TX

Built in the 1850s by German settlers in New Braunfels, the Schmidt home used the Old World "Fachwerk" method — a timber frame of hand-hewn cedar, pine, and oak filled with adobe. Its story-and-a-half form, pitched roof, and outside stair reflect the building traditions the German immigrants carried to the Texas Hill Country.

New Braunfels, TX

The oldest part of this New Braunfels house was built about 1847 by Heinrich Scholl, Jr., using the German "Fachwerk" technique of a hewn-cedar timber frame filled with adobe brick. A later Victorian addition reflects how the growing town's tastes changed over the decades while the original immigrant-era core survived.

Romney, WV

Romney is among West Virginia's oldest chartered towns, and its early schoolhouse recalls the era when small communities pooled their resources to raise a single building where local children learned their letters. Before public education was universal, a town's "old school house" was often its first civic institution after the church — a modest frame or brick structure that doubled as a meeting hall and a point of neighborhood pride. This surviving building preserves the memory of that formative chapter in the region's life.

Arlington, MA

The Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington is a 19th-century New England woodworking mill listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mills like this powered the region's manufacturing economy, turning water and later machine power into finished goods. Its survival preserves a working example of the small industrial workshops that once lined New England's rivers and mill towns.
