The Story
Blue Star Memorials trace to 1945, when garden clubs planted flowering trees along a New Jersey highway to honor World War II service members, later broadening to salute the entire armed forces. In Blakely, the Garden Club of Georgia joined its Magnolia District and the Blakely Garden Club to raise this marker. The blue star echoes the service flags families hung for relatives in uniform.

Battle of Chickasawachee Swamp

In July 1836, amid the violent upheaval of the Creek War in the Deep South, some 300 warriors fortified an island in Chickasawachee Swamp after a deadly raid on nearby settlers. Georgia militia under Col. Thomas Beall pursued them into the swamp, where a fierce fight left casualties on both sides and recovered plunder taken in the raid on Roanoke. The battle scattered the warriors and broke their planned march toward Florida.
