The Story
Launched in 1945 by the National Garden Clubs, the Blue Star Memorial honors those who serve in the armed forces, taking its name from the blue-star flags families hung during World War II. The Cherokee Garden Club of Camilla joined the Garden Club of Georgia and the state transportation department to place this marker in Mitchell County. Its tribute extends to all who have defended the nation.

Battle of Chickasawachee Swamp

In July 1836, amid the violent upheaval of the Creek War in the Deep South, some 300 warriors fortified an island in Chickasawachee Swamp after a deadly raid on nearby settlers. Georgia militia under Col. Thomas Beall pursued them into the swamp, where a fierce fight left casualties on both sides and recovered plunder taken in the raid on Roanoke. The battle scattered the warriors and broke their planned march toward Florida.
