Caldwell, TX

This Presbyterian congregation was gathered by the Rev. Hugh Wilson, a pioneering missionary who carried his faith across the rough Texas frontier. Though the first surviving record dates to 1850, the church likely formed soon after Caldwell itself was founded in 1840, and in the 1880s its members worshiped in the local Methodist building. A fire destroyed their first sanctuary in 1906, but the congregation endured as a link to the earliest days of Burleson County.

Cisco, TX

When Cisco was laid out in 1881, a corner lot was set aside for Presbyterians, and that August four local residents—three of them women—organized the fellowship. A tornado leveled the first sanctuary in 1893, and a second building carried the congregation until the present facilities were finished in 1924. Through it all the church wove itself into the town's charitable and social life.

Clarksville, TX

This Presbyterian congregation traces its roots to Old Shiloh in 1833, when Anglo settlers were streaming into what was then Mexican Texas, and relocated to Clarksville in 1858. The present church building went up in 1905. It stands among the oldest congregations in Red River County, a corner of Texas settled early via the routes down from the north and east.

Collegeport, TX

Collegeport was a planned townsite promoted by the Burton D. Hurd Land Company to sell Pierce family lands, complete with ground for a would-be Gulf Coast University of Industrial Arts. In 1909 leaders of fourteen denominations founded a federated church at the university chapel, calling as pastor Murray A. Travis, who also served as college dean and ran an early local newspaper. The congregation built a five-room sanctuary in 1910 that long doubled as schoolhouse and community center, and in 1922 formally joined the Presbyterian Church to become First Presbyterian of Collegeport.

Commerce, TX

In November 1888 seventeen charter members joined the Rev. J. C. Grow to organize the First Presbyterian Church of Commerce, worshiping in the town's shared Union Church until they finished their own frame sanctuary in 1893. The Rev. Elijah B. Fincher became the first resident pastor in 1897, and a brick sanctuary rose at Monroe and Caddo streets in 1913. The congregation has been woven into the life of Commerce for more than a century.

Corpus Christi, TX

Organized in 1867 with just seven charter members under the Rev. William Mitchell, this Corpus Christi congregation built its first sanctuary despite a yellow fever epidemic that delayed the work into 1868. As the city grew, larger buildings followed—including this 1930 Gothic Revival sanctuary funded by the Rachel Doddridge Estate, with its offset tower and art glass windows. Over more than a century the church sheltered hurricane victims and helped found eight other Presbyterian congregations in the city.

Cotulla, TX

A visiting pastor established this Presbyterian congregation on September 4, 1884, and for its first years members worshiped in the town's Methodist and Baptist churches before building their own sanctuary in 1891. The long-serving Rev. Harry W. Hamilton led the church from 1909 until his death in 1940. When fire destroyed the frame building in 1963—sparing only a silver communion service—the congregation rebuilt, dedicating the present structure in 1965.

Crockett, TX

Organized in 1854 by the East Texas Presbytery, this Crockett congregation first met in a Baptist church before building its own home, replaced by a new building on this location in 1886. That structure burned on Christmas Day 1926 and was rebuilt as the present church. It is also known as Tenney Memorial for Rev. S.F. Tenney, who served as its pastor for 54 years.

Crowley, TX

This congregation began in the plainest frontier fashion — brush arbor meetings and a Union Sunday School in 1895 — before the Presbyterians broke away to form their own fellowship and raised a sanctuary by 1897. Served for years by circuit-riding ministers, it counted among its early pastors the Rev. L. C. Collier, who also led the nearby Red Oak Academy.

Cuero, TX

On July 8, 1849, settlers gathered beneath a live oak at the home of Dr. Robert and Mary Peebles to form Live Oak Presbyterian Church, the first Presbyterian congregation in DeWitt County. Led by the Rev. William Cochran Blair, the church moved to the county seat at Clinton in 1851, and over the following decades several area congregations rose and eventually merged into a single church at Cuero by 1883. Congregations from Indianola and Thomaston later joined as well, keeping the church at the center of community life.

El Paso, TX

El Paso's Presbyterians first worshiped in a shared union tent at the town's center before organizing their own congregation in 1882 under the Rev. John Alexander Merrill. Sixteen charter members raised a sanctuary the next year, and the growing church moved into ever-larger buildings as El Paso boomed. By the 1940s it served 1,400 members and ministered to soldiers stationed nearby during World War II.

Elgin, TX

Elgin was founded in 1872 along the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, and within a decade the Rev. A.J. Adkisson and ten charter members had organized a Cumberland Presbyterian church there. Meeting in borrowed churches and the schoolhouse until they built a frame church and manse in 1886, the congregation called its first full-time pastor in 1908 and raised a red-brick sanctuary the next year. The church marked its centennial in 1981.

Ferris, TX

Thirteen charter members organized this Presbyterian congregation in 1858 near Bluff Springs, then followed the region's growth by moving into Ferris in 1875. An 1890 building gave way to the present Classical Revival sanctuary of 1925–26, distinguished by paired pilasters, an arched entry, and two-story stained-glass windows. The church has anchored community life in this Ellis County town for well over a century.

Forney, TX

First Presbyterian Church of Forney grew from two roots: a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation organized in 1872, back when the town was still called Brooklyn, and a Southern Presbyterian church begun in 1883 that built a sanctuary on this site. The two merged in 1919 under the present name, and a new red-brick church was dedicated here in 1925. It has remained a fixture of Forney community life ever since.

Fort Worth, TX

Organized in 1873 with ten charter members as a Southern Presbyterian congregation, this Fort Worth church built a frame sanctuary downtown, took its present name in 1886, and raised a stone building in 1890. In 1916 it joined with a formerly Cumberland Presbyterian congregation to form Texas's first such federation — two churches sharing a pastor while keeping separate national ties — a division healed nationally only when the denominations reunited in 1983.

Garland, TX

This congregation traces its roots to April 22, 1888, when the Rev. Benjamin Spencer and twenty-five charter members organized a Cumberland Presbyterian church serving farmers, merchants, and others in early Garland. After worshiping in a variety of borrowed spaces, the members raised their first sanctuary—a one-room frame building—on South Ninth Street in 1901, replacing it with a brick structure in 1929. The church endures as a reminder of Garland's earliest religious life.

Granbury, TX

Presbyterians were worshipping around Granbury by the 1850s and formally organized this congregation in 1879, just a few years after the town itself was founded. The charter rolls read like a directory of early Hood County families. In 1895–96 they raised the modified-Gothic sanctuary that still stands, its three-story belfry and steeple a landmark of the young courthouse town.

Greenville, TX

Founded in 1880, this Presbyterian congregation met in a courthouse and an opera house before building a home of its own, and it has served Greenville for well over a century. Beyond worship, its members turned to volunteer work, overseas missions, and a distinctive learning center supporting families dealing with learning disabilities. Through those efforts the church became a spiritual, educational, and social anchor for the city.

Houston, TX

On Easter Sunday 1839, in the Senate Chamber of the Republic of Texas Capitol, a missionary from the United States and eleven members organized the First Presbyterian Church of Houston. Its first sanctuary, built on land given by the town's founding Allen family, was the first house of worship completed in Houston and hosted other congregations and even the House of Representatives — where President Sam Houston once addressed a joint session. Fire, growth, and rebuilding carried the congregation through four sanctuaries to its present home.

Huntsville, TX

Organized in 1848 with a single elder and ten members, this congregation first worshiped in the county courthouse and the chapel of Austin College before building its own sanctuary in 1855 under the Rev. Daniel Baker. Its growth mirrored Huntsville's own, drawing in many of the town's civic leaders and long ministering to area college students. Successive sanctuaries in 1898, 1956, and 1974-75 mark its endurance.

Itasca, TX

This congregation is a patchwork of at least six nineteenth-century churches scattered across five small Hill County communities, gradually stitched together through mergers that began in 1912. Its long association with the Presbyterian Children's Home, a statewide orphanage founded in 1906, gave it a mission beyond its own membership. Each vanished settlement — Osceola, Eureka, Files Valley, and the rest — left its people folded into this single fellowship in Itasca.

Kerrville, TX

Presbyterians in the Hill Country town of Kerrville first worshipped in a shared Union Church before organizing their own congregation in 1888. A modest wooden church gave way in 1923 to the present Beaux Arts sanctuary, distinguished by a two-story entry with Doric columns, a classical pediment, and tall arched stained-glass windows. The building reflects the growing prosperity and architectural ambition of small Texas towns in the early twentieth century.

Kingsville, TX

Tradition says the first Presbyterians in Kingsville worshipped in the shade of mesquite trees before formally organizing in January 1905, meeting at the Kingsville Lumber Company under the Rev. A.H.P. McCurdy. Henrietta King and the Kleberg Town and Improvement Company—the interests behind the great King Ranch town—donated the land, and the congregation dedicated its first sanctuary in 1906.

Lancaster, TX

In 1856 the Rev. Michael Dickson and nine charter members gathered in a rough cabinet workshop to organize this Presbyterian congregation, worshiping first in a shared schoolhouse. After the Civil War the Ladies Aid Society raised the money for a permanent site, the first church rose in 1884, and the present sanctuary was completed in 1912 and dedicated in 1917.

Leonard, TX

Organized in 1875 at Valley Creek through the efforts of the community's founding merchant, this Presbyterian congregation followed the railroad when the Denison and Southeastern line created the new town of Leonard, building the town's first church there after a storm wrecked its earlier home. In 1905 it merged with a nearby Cumberland Presbyterian congregation to become the First Presbyterian Church. Its history tracks how rail lines redrew the map of rural Texas.

Lockhart, TX

First Presbyterian Church of Lockhart organized in 1849 with ten members under the Rev. N. P. Charlot, meeting in homes and the Masonic hall until elders bought this site in 1854 and raised a concrete building the next year. An 1879 cyclone leveled that church; successors followed in 1880 and the present sanctuary in 1914. One of the oldest congregations in the city, it still serves its neighbors through outreach.

Longview, TX

Nine charter members of the Old School Southern Presbyterian Church organized this congregation in 1872 as a mission in the brand-new railroad town of Longview. The Texas and Pacific Railroad donated the land for its first building in 1874, and the Rev. James H. Wiggins became its first full-time pastor. The church planted two more mission congregations in the area within two decades.

Lott, TX

The railroad town of Lott was platted in 1890, and within two years the local Presbytery organized this church, raising a first sanctuary in 1892. Weather and misfortune tested it hard: a tornado destroyed that building in 1893, lightning and fire took its successor in 1939, and the congregation rebuilt yet again in 1942. Through it all, its Ladies Auxiliary, Sunday School, and mission work carried on.

Luling, TX

When the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railroad surveyed Luling in 1874, it deeded land for churches — and in 1877 the Rev. Philip H. Hensley gathered fourteen people to organize a Presbyterian congregation. They built this sanctuary in 1882, later removing its spire and bell during repairs and adding a Sunday school annex, as membership grew to a peak of 92 by 1962.

Mabank, TX

This congregation began in 1896 as a small Cumberland Presbyterian church in Lawndale, worshipping in the local schoolhouse. When the Texas and New Orleans Railroad came through in 1900 and created the town of Mabank on the line, Lawndale's citizens relocated, and the church moved with them, completing a frame sanctuary in 1903. Through a lean stretch in the Depression and a lakeside boom in the 1960s, the congregation endured and grew.

Lott, TX

Presbyterian preaching reached the Falls County Courthouse in Marlin as early as 1852, from a pulpit hoisted into the rafters when idle. The church was formally organized in 1874 by the Rev. Levi Tenney and the Rev. Hilary Mosely, worshiping in borrowed quarters until its first building rose in 1893. Its present edifice, completed in 1918, hosted the city's Thanksgiving service marking the end of World War I; a young member, Motte Martin, became one of the earliest missionaries to the Congo.

Maysfield, TX

The Rev. Levi Tenney organized this Presbyterian congregation in August 1873 with just nine members, among them early settler T. N. Mayes, who donated the townsite that took his name as Maysfield. The members raised this first building in 1883, dedicated it the following year, and welcomed their first resident pastor in 1886. Over the decades the small church sent three of its own into the ministry across several states.

McAllen, TX

This congregation grew from McAllen's first Presbyterian service, held in a lumberyard in 1908, and was sustained through the turbulent years of the Mexican Revolution by the Women's Society formed in 1909. Its first sanctuary of 1910 became an early landmark of the border town, later expanded with a fellowship hall, education building, and new sanctuary through the mid-20th century.

McKinney, TX

Organized in 1874 at the home of local physician Dr. E.N. McAuley, this was the first congregation in Collin County tied to the Presbyterian Church in the United States, a Southern denomination born during the Civil War. From eighteen charter members it grew steadily, outgrowing a modest frame chapel and a brick sanctuary before settling into its present home in 1966, still ringing a bell cast for the fellowship in its earliest years.

Memphis, TX

Established in 1890 with just thirteen members, this Panhandle congregation raised its second and grander sanctuary in 1911, built by church member J. S. Cobb in a neo-classical style marked by arched windows and a domed roof. Among its treasures was a large pipe organ originally driven by water pressure — an ingenious touch in a young prairie town. The building stands as a mark of how quickly settled institutions took root in the newly opened Panhandle.

Mexia, TX

This congregation began among Cumberland Presbyterians near Old Springfield in 1871, then followed opportunity to the new railroad town of Mexia after the Houston & Texas Central arrived that same year. It raised a modest meetinghouse in 1878 and the prairie Gothic building seen today in 1898, later absorbing neighboring Presbyterian branches whose windows and bell were folded into the sanctuary. The church's history maps the way Texas towns and their faith communities reorganized themselves around the railroads.

Mission, TX

In 1909 Dr. Samuel McPheeters Glasgow preached Mission's first sermon and started a Sunday school, and with Dr. M. W. Doggett organized the First Presbyterian Church of Mission in January 1910; the two also helped plant churches across the Valley. A small wooden building went up by April 1910, replaced by larger complexes in 1955 and 2005. Over the decades its services drew notable visitors, and the congregation sustained wide-ranging charitable work.

Mt. Pleasant, TX

The Rev. William Waldo Brimm, an early area evangelist, organized this congregation in 1881, and two years later it bought this site and raised a white frame church. Despite early hardships the church grew rapidly after 1900, replacing its frame building with brick in 1923 and adding an educational facility in 1955. For over a century it remained a vital part of Mt. Pleasant's community life.

Navasota, TX

Organized in 1866 with members drawn from the older congregation at nearby Washington, Texas, this church built its first home in 1876 and replaced it in 1894 with the finely crafted Victorian sanctuary shaped by the taste of its English builders. The congregation reflects the westward and southward movement of settlers who carried established faiths into a rebuilding post-Civil War Texas.

Palacios, TX

Organized in 1907 by the Rev. W. S. Red with eighteen charter members, the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios completed its first building in 1910 and was chartered by the state in 1911, its members among the town's civic founders. During World War II the church ran a soldiers' center serving nearby Camp Hulen, and in the decades that followed its women worked toward desegregating Palacios schools and ran a multiracial tutorial program with other congregations. In 1975 the church sponsored a Vietnamese refugee family, continuing a long tradition of outward-facing service.

Pleasanton, TX

In 1914 evangelist N.H. Doggett pitched his traveling tent in Pleasanton, and on March 29 that year organized the county's first Presbyterian congregation, with monthly services and weekly Sunday school. Local businessman P.A. Vance donated land and funds for a church on Virginia Street, where the first service was held in early 1915 under the congregation's first resident minister, George Faison. The church later relocated to Bryant Street in 1958 and has remained a fixture of Pleasanton's civic and spiritual life.

Port Lavaca, TX

Legend has it that Port Lavaca's first Presbyterian service was held in a saloon in 1848, before eleven charter members gathered with the Rev. A. Stephen F. Cocke in a shared warehouse that also served the Methodists and the school. The congregation built its first church in 1849, weathered the destruction of its building in the 1886 storm, disbanded, and reorganized in 1909, dedicating a modern home in 1956.

Prosper, TX

Organized in 1878 by 26 members under Rev. R.H. Hacker, this Cumberland Presbyterian congregation first met in the Pleasant Valley schoolhouse before building a one-room frame church in the Rock Hill community in 1892. When the railroad drew settlement to Prosper, the church moved there in 1902 and took the town's name a year later. Over more than a century it has added wings, supported a women's association, and sent stained-glass 'peace panels' to places as far away as Sarajevo and Jerusalem.

Quanah, TX

Organized in 1892 in the home of Mrs. A. E. deGraffenried with just eight charter members, this Presbyterian congregation took root in Quanah, a young railroad town on the northwest Texas frontier. In 1909 contractor R. Henry Stuckley built its striking Beaux Arts classical sanctuary, distinguished by columns, arched stained-glass windows, and an elaborate stained-glass dome. The building stands as a symbol of the congregation's enduring service in a community carved from the recently opened plains.

Richardson, TX

In the years after the Civil War, as central Texas farming communities took root, a small band of twenty charter members gathered in 1870 under a Cumberland Presbyterian banner, worshiping first in a family home before raising a one-room frame sanctuary on donated land. Over the next century the congregation moved, grew, and rebuilt several times, taking the name First Presbyterian Church of Richardson in 1983. Its long-running Sunday School and outreach ministries—blood drives, clinics, and food pantries—kept it woven into the life of a town that grew up around it.

Rockport, TX

Tracing its roots to 1869, this Gulf Coast congregation was deactivated in 1879 but reorganized with twenty charter members in 1889, worshiping in borrowed facilities until completing its own building around 1906–07. After surviving repeated hurricanes, the church relocated to this site in 1949, having counted many of Rockport's community leaders among its members.

Rockwall, TX

On a November day in 1854, twenty-three settlers led by the Rev. John U. Vance organized a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation on the North Texas frontier. Worshipping in schools for its first decades, the church raised a frame sanctuary in 1888 only to lose it to a windstorm months later; rebuilt and moved more than once since, it has long opened its doors to baby clinics, tutoring, reading programs, and a pantry for the needy.

Rusk, TX

Presbyterian worship in Rusk began in 1847, just a year after the town's founding, when the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized with only four members. A separate 'Old School' congregation dated to 1831 and built its own sanctuary in 1854. The two united in 1906 as the First Presbyterian Church, and in 1913-14 raised the town's first brick church, sustained across the decades by the labors of its Ladies' Aid Society.

San Antonio, TX

When a Presbyterian and a Methodist minister held San Antonio's first Protestant service in 1844, they opened a new chapter in a long-Catholic city. Organized in 1846, this congregation built the city's first Protestant church house of adobe, weathered decline, a Civil War split from the national church, and a storm that toppled its early building. Successive sanctuaries followed, culminating in the 1910 Gothic Revival structure designed by noted architect Atlee B. Ayres, from which pioneering radio broadcasts of services would later air.

San Benito, TX

Organized in 1910, just three years after San Benito was founded, this Rio Grande Valley congregation lost its first frame sanctuary to a 1933 hurricane. The following year it rebuilt with help from a federal loan, earning the distinction of being called America's first Public Works Administration church. Its Mission Revival design, marked by arched gable parapets, roots it firmly in the architecture of the South Texas borderlands.

Sulphur Springs, TX

Organized in 1852 with just eight members and elder Samuel Davidson, this Presbyterian congregation first shared a Connally Street sanctuary with the Cumberland Presbyterians until it burned in 1873. The members built anew on this site in 1882, called their first resident pastor in 1886, and organized a Ladies Missionary Society in 1890. The present sanctuary dates to 1920, with an education wing added in 1981.

Taft, TX

In the growing company town of Taft, early Presbyterians first worshipped in a tent and shared borrowed space with Methodists before organizing formally in 1920 with 28 charter members. On land provided by the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Co., the two congregations built a joint sanctuary, which the Presbyterians soon bought outright, adding a manse moved in from Rockport. Over the following decades the church supported wartime efforts, sponsored a Presbyterian girls' school and Vacation Bible School, and staged a beloved live nativity each Christmas.

Taylor, TX

This Presbyterian congregation traces its roots to 1876, when it was tied to the church in nearby Georgetown and shared a minister, the Rev. John McMurray, who also ran a school across the street. Trustees bought this property in 1878 and completed a frame sanctuary by Thanksgiving that year, and the church called its first full-time pastor in 1889. After merging with a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation around 1910, the growing church built a new brick sanctuary in 1912–1913.

Temple, TX

When the railroad turned Temple into a booming young town in the early 1880s, its first congregation took root: on October 19, 1881, twenty-four members left the established church in nearby Belton to organize the First Presbyterian Church of Temple. They worshipped in two early buildings at North First and Barton before raising the present sanctuary beginning in 1929. The marker traces a spiritual community that arrived almost at the town's birth.

Terrell, TX

This congregation grew from two Presbyterian churches formed in the 1870s: a Cumberland Presbyterian church that had stood in the town of Lawrence, and Terrell's Old School Presbyterian congregation. The two united in 1904 into a single body. It built a sanctuary at Rockwall and High streets in 1907-08 and replaced it with a new building on the present site in 1958.

Uvalde, TX

In 1881 the Western Texas Presbytery sent the Rev. James R. Bridges into a vast and often dangerous frontier field stretching across Bandera, Brackettville, Del Rio, and the Nueces and Frio canyons. With the help of newly arrived Presbyterian families, he organized the Uvalde church in February 1882, meeting first in the Methodist building before raising one of their own. Storms, world war, and changing pastors followed, but the congregation grew steadily through the twentieth century.

Victoria, TX

Organized in 1841 in the young Republic of Texas by the Rev. William C. Blair and eight charter members, this was one of Victoria's earliest congregations. It built its first sanctuary near DeLeon Plaza and grew steadily, its Ladies Aid Benevolent Society forming in 1872 and a Presbyterian day school in 1946. The congregation helped seed new churches across the region before relocating to its present site in 1966.

Waco, TX

Founded in 1855 with just seventeen members and two ruling elders, the First Presbyterian Church of Waco grew alongside its frontier town, outgrowing two earlier buildings before raising the present sanctuary in 1912. Remarkably, across seventy-four years the congregation had only two ministers — Dr. Samuel A. King and Dr. Charles T. Caldwell — an unusual continuity of leadership. The church's steady history mirrors Waco's own growth from antebellum settlement to established city.

West, TX

The Rev. D. C. Kinnard began a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation here in 1875, and a first building rose in 1883, replaced by the present structure in 1901. In 1911 Czech immigrants organized their own Presbyterian church and worshipped separately in their native language, uniting with the congregation only in 1953. Further mergers, including St. Peter's United Church of Christ in 1966, drew several strands into the First United Church of West.

Winnsboro, TX

Organized in 1871 by the Rev. R. E. Sherrill with former members of the Presbyterian church at nearby Webster, this congregation first worshiped in a white frame building raised on land donated by local philanthropist Nancy Cook. In 1907 it moved to this site, converting a relocated frame schoolhouse into a sanctuary, and by 1953 had added a manse and fellowship hall. It has remained woven into the life of Winnsboro throughout its history.
