American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps and Station
Jacksonville Beach, FL
This marker honors the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps and its station at Jacksonville Beach, one of the oldest organized volunteer lifesaving groups in the United States, founded in 1912 after a series of drownings along the Atlantic surf. Trained volunteers stood watch over the crowded beach, pioneering the drills, equipment, and beach-patrol methods that would spread to shorelines across the country. The station became a community institution and a model for organized water rescue.
