Iran Hostage Crisis Memorial Grove
San Diego, CA
This palm grove was planted by the Kiwanis Club of San Diego in honor of the 52 American citizens held hostage in Iran from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981. Seized when militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, the hostages endured 444 days of captivity that riveted the nation, dominated the evening news, and reshaped American politics. Their release, on the day a new president was inaugurated, was met with yellow ribbons and celebrations across the country.
