San Antonio, TX

The Methodist circuit rider John Wesley DeVilbiss came to the young Republic of Texas in 1842 to minister along its southwestern Hispanic borderlands, working to build harmony among the region's varied cultures. In April 1844 he delivered what tradition holds was the first English-language sermon ever preached in San Antonio, and he later inspired the founding of Oak Island Church. A church building of 1872 still holds furniture he and his son crafted by hand.

Brownwood, TX

Noah T. Byars, a South Carolina–born blacksmith and gunsmith, set up shop at Washington-on-the-Brazos, where Texas delegates adopted their Declaration of Independence in 1836—after which he was named armorer of the Texas army. Ordained a Baptist preacher in 1841 and appointed the state convention's first missionary in 1848, he is credited with founding more than 60 churches across the Texas frontier. He helped organize Brownwood's First Baptist Church and championed the Baptist college that opened as Howard Payne in 1889, a year after his death.

Weslaco, TX

Pierre Yves Keralum, born in France in 1817, was ordained an Oblate priest at Marseilles in 1852 and that same year came to South Texas with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. A trained architect, he left his mark on churches including Our Lady of Refuge in Roma and the cathedral in Brownsville, all while riding vast circuits to minister to the region's scattered faithful. He vanished on the trail in 1872, and his remains were not found for ten years — earning him the name 'The Lost Missionary.'

New York, TX

Thomas Hunt Hall followed his father and grandfather into the Methodist ministry, then answered a different call when the Civil War began, enlisting in the 14th Texas Cavalry of the Confederate Army. A Georgia native who reached Texas in 1854, he later took up medicine and spent decades serving Smith and Henderson counties as both preacher and physician, settling in the New York community in 1895.

Lovelady, TX

Born in the small Houston County town of Lovelady in 1877, Thomas Nelms Mainer wore many hats over his ninety-one years—newspaper editor, Baptist minister, and community leader. From 1921 to 1936 he served as superintendent of the Lovelady schools, and he devoted himself to preserving the history of his native county through research and writing. With his wife Mattie he raised seven children in the community he served.

Ballinger, TX

An Illinois native and Primitive Baptist elder, the Rev. Thomas W. Cotten settled in this part of West Texas in 1877 and the next year helped organize Runnels County's first congregation, the Colorado Baptist Church, serving as its first pastor. When the county was formally organized in 1880, his stone house did double duty as the temporary courthouse. He and his wife, Catharine, raised six children to adulthood.

Houston, TX

William Milton Tryon, a New Yorker licensed to preach in Georgia and ordained in Alabama, volunteered in 1841 to serve Texas as a missionary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Riding the circuit of southeast Texas, he revived congregations, helped organize the state's Baptist associations, and—with Robert E. B. Baylor—drafted the charter for the college that became Baylor University, serving as the first president of its board of trustees. In 1845 he became the resident pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church, raising the money for its first brick building before dying of yellow fever in 1847.

Clarksville, TX

A Methodist circuit rider in the Missouri Conference, William Stevenson crossed into the Red River country in 1815 and preached to the Claiborne Wright family and their neighbors — sermons remembered as the first Protestant worship ever held in Texas, then part of Catholic New Spain. A friend of empresario Stephen F. Austin, Stevenson helped plant the seed of religious pluralism on the frontier decades before Texas independence.

Sherman, TX

Kentucky-born John Humphreys Reynolds rode the Methodist circuit in Tennessee before moving his ministry to North Central Texas in 1879. In Sherman he organized the Willow Street Methodist Church, later renamed Key Memorial for Bishop J. S. Key, and preached to area congregations well into his nineties. A temperance advocate, educator, and 32nd-degree Mason, he was known affectionately as "Uncle Johnny."

Fayetteville, TX

When Czech Catholics settled in Fayette County in the 1850s, they had no priest who spoke their language, so they petitioned the Bishop of Texas for one of their own. In 1872 the Rev. Joseph Chromcik arrived from Europe and became the state's first permanent Czech Catholic priest, holding his first service in Fayetteville that year. Over his life he founded a school and numerous churches and helped establish the Czech Catholic Union of Texas, earning the affectionate title "Taticek" — dear little father.

Houston, TX

Born in Alabama around 1861, the Rev. Ned P. Pullum became a leading Baptist minister in Houston's Freedmen's Town, the Fourth Ward community founded by the formerly enslaved after emancipation. He pastored Bethel Baptist after the death of the Rev. John "Jack" Yates, then founded Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in 1903, leading it for 24 years. A civic force and entrepreneur, he helped establish the segregation-era Carnegie Colored Library, supported a Black-run hospital, and built businesses including a brickworks, a shoe-repair shop, and two drugstores.

Laurens, SC

This hand-hewn log cabin dates to about 1810, when the South Carolina upcountry around Laurens and Gray Court was still a rough frontier of small farmsteads carved from the backwoods. Cabins like this — a single sturdy room of notched logs — were the first permanent homes of families pushing into the Piedmont in the early republic. Its survival offers a rare, tangible glimpse of everyday pioneer life two centuries ago.

Laramie County, WY

This interpretive marker traces the decline of the Union Pacific Railroad's dominance after World War II, as the growing Interstate Highway System and commercial aviation drew away passengers and freight. Cheyenne and southeastern Wyoming had grown up as railroad country, making the shift keenly felt here.

Cuero, TX

Completed in 1893, this triple-brick house was built by Robert Allert as his own home. A skilled brickmason, Allert was a partner in Fuess and Allert, a contracting firm that raised buildings across Cuero, other South Texas towns, and even into northern Mexico. His sturdy residence stands as a sample of the craftsmanship his firm sold to the wider region.

Point Blank, TX

Robert Tod Robinson, a planter who came to Texas from Alabama, built this house in 1857 on high ground near the meeting of waterways and land trails, close to the property of Governor George T. Wood. He raised a large family here in a log home fronted by wide double verandas in the style of his native state. Siding covered the logs in 1919 and the facade was altered in the 1970s, but a descendant still owns and preserves it.

Cranfills Gap, TX

The Rock Church was raised in 1886 from native stone by architect Andrew Mickelson and his brothers Christian and Ole, beginning humbly with a dirt floor and planks laid across kegs for pews. It served the Norwegian settlers of this Bosque County community, an offshoot of Our Savior's Lutheran Church at nearby Norse. As the settlement grew, the St. Olaf congregation organized in 1902 and later built a new church in Cranfills Gap, leaving this sturdy stone sanctuary for special occasions.

Rocksprings, TX

The thin, one-inch flow of water that gave Rocksprings its name was a vital stop for travelers and freighters crossing the dry Edwards Plateau. Around it grew sheep camps, cattle ranches, and small farms in the 1880s — and, the marker admits, a nearby outlaw hut — until an 1891 post office and townsite made it the seat of Edwards County.

Saxonburg, PA · est. 1947

In 1832 the German-born engineer John A. Roebling founded the village of Saxonburg and launched the business that would make him famous, manufacturing the twisted steel wire rope that revolutionized suspension engineering. His son Washington, born here in 1837, would carry their shared vision to completion by building the Brooklyn Bridge after his father's death. From this small Butler County settlement came ideas that reshaped how Americans spanned their rivers and harbors.

Nacogdoches, TX

This late-Victorian residence was built in 1896-97 by architect D. A. G. Rulfs for a railroad executive and his family, including his daughter and son-in-law, businessman Roland Jones. Four generations of the Jones family lived in the ornate home. It stands as an example of the prosperity that the railroad brought to Nacogdoches at the close of the nineteenth century.

Marble Falls, TX

George and Elizabeth Roper built this double-galleried hotel about 1888, and in the growing town of Marble Falls it became a favored stop for visiting businessmen and dignitaries. Sold to the Smith family in 1926, it operated under several names; R.O. Smith managed it from the 1930s and later served as the town's mayor. The hotel stayed in the family until 1963.

East Taylor Township, PA

On September 7, 1923, amid rising racial hostility, Johnstown Mayor Joseph Cauffiel ordered every Black and Mexican resident who had lived in the area less than seven years to leave. By some accounts more than 2,000 people were driven out under threat of jail. The episode drew national attention—much of it from Black journalists and activists—prompting a state investigation and a public backlash that helped cost Cauffiel his reelection.

Galveston, TX

The oldest free public library in continuous operation in Texas, the Rosenberg Library was endowed by the 1893 will of Henry Rosenberg, a Swiss immigrant who arrived in Galveston in 1843 and prospered as a banker and merchant. He hoped it would aid the 'intellectual and moral development' of his adopted city 'through many generations.' Opened in 1900, it absorbed the earlier Galveston Mercantile Library and today holds over a million books, manuscripts, and artifacts, making it a major repository of Texas history.

Waco, TX

Shapley Prince Ross camped beneath this Live Oak in 1839 while migrating from Missouri, then returned in 1848 at the head of a Texas Ranger company. When Waco was founded in 1849 he bought the land around the tree and became the young town's postmaster, ferryman, and hotelkeeper. His children were among the first born to permanent Anglo-American settlers here, and one son, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, went on to serve as governor of Texas from 1887 to 1891.

Round Rock, TX

This table-shaped stone in the middle of Brushy Creek long guided Native travelers and early settlers to an important low-water wagon crossing, where century-old wheel ruts can still be seen in the creek bed. The rocky ford drew a settlement whose "Brushy Creek" post office opened in 1851; at postmaster Thomas C. Oatts's urging it was renamed "Round Rock" in 1854 for the very stone. The town kept the name when it moved to meet the railroad a mile east in 1877.

Royalton, VT

On October 16, 1780, a large raiding party of Native fighters led by a British officer swept down the White River valley during the Revolutionary War, burning the frontier settlement of Royalton and neighboring towns, killing several settlers and carrying off more than two dozen captives. It was one of the last major raids on the Vermont frontier and long remembered in the region's founding lore.

Galveston, TX

Ohio-born priest James Martin Kirwin arrived in Galveston in 1896 and quickly became one of the island's most trusted civic leaders. After the catastrophic 1900 hurricane—the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history—he helped form the Committee for Public Safety and, alongside his friend Rabbi Henry Cohen, drove the city's rebuilding, from the great Seawall to labor peace on the docks. In the 1920s he took a public stand against the Ku Klux Klan.

Galveston, TX

A native of France who had served in its army, Marius Etienne Chataignon came to the United States in 1907 and to Texas in 1910, entering the priesthood and serving parishes in Galveston. He was a U.S. Army chaplain in France during World War I, and in World War II — promoted to colonel and known fondly as Father Chat, Galveston's soldier priest — he served as chief chaplain of the II Corps, 5th Army in North Africa and Italy. Returning a decorated veteran, he led Sacred Heart Church and helped establish a Catholic high school for boys before retiring from the Army in 1953.

Dayton, TX

As Santa Anna's army pushed into Texas in the spring of 1836, terrified colonists abandoned their homes in a chaotic flight remembered as the Runaway Scrape. Families left beds unmade and breakfasts uneaten, fleeing east by wagon, horse, and foot toward the Sabine and safety in the United States. Many suffered terribly in rain-soaked camps along the swollen Trinity River, where measles and hardship claimed children's lives—until word of Sam Houston's victory at San Jacinto turned the desperate exodus around with the cry, "Turn back, turn back."

Rusk, TX

Rusk's newspaper tradition reaches back to the Cherokee Sentinel, first published in 1850, from which today's Cherokeean/Herald traces its lineage through a long chain of name changes and mergers. Among the young men who once set type here was James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas. Publishers over the generations included judges, a U.S. congressman, and state legislators, keeping the paper in continuous operation into the 21st century as one of the oldest weeklies in Texas.

Burnet, TX

William and Mary Russell built this Victorian home in 1883–84; William, a Civil War veteran, went on to lead Burnet's school system for some fifteen years. After the house sold in 1895, its tenants included J. W. Edgar, a future state commissioner of education, and one of Texas's first game wardens. Since 1922 the McFarland family has owned and carefully preserved the residence. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, 1978.

Wayside, TX

In 1889 S.P. Hamblen and his wife Virginia Ann settled the Panhandle country south of Claude, and by 1901–02 the family had raised corrals, a barn, and a stone-walled dugout at a place called Mesquite Flat, where their tenth child was born. The father hauled cedar posts cut in Palo Duro Canyon to sell in Amarillo, while Virginia Ann guarded the children from rattlesnakes and marauding wolves. Their longing for good roads later inspired a son to design Hamblen Drive.

Canyon, TX

In 1953 a Canyon Ford dealer bought a narrow-gauge passenger train from an Illinois drive-in theater, and it was installed on the floor of Palo Duro Canyon State Park as the Sad Monkey Railroad—named for a cliff formation said to resemble a mournful monkey. For more than forty years, conductors led visitors on a two-mile, twenty-minute ride laced with history, geology, and folklore. Rising insurance costs closed the line in 1996, but community efforts later put the engine and a passenger car on display at a Canyon park.

Charleston, SC

In the harbor city of Charleston, where the Civil War's first shots rang out in 1861, the salvaging of a heavy gun from the water was no small matter. This marker honors Adolphus W. and James C. Lacoste, who together with others managed to recover a cannon that trained engineers of both the Federal and Confederate armies had declared impossible to raise. Their feat turned a written-off relic into a lasting piece of the city's wartime memory.

Philadelphia, PA · est. 1998

In 1879 seventeen-year-old Eliza Shirley, newly arrived from England, opened the first U.S. corps of the Salvation Army on Oxford Street, carrying out a mission from the movement's founder, William Booth. What began with a teenager's storefront ministry to the poor grew into one of the largest charitable organizations in the country. From this Philadelphia beginning, the Army spread its blend of evangelism and social relief nationwide.

Windom vicinity, TX

This site marks the boyhood homesite of Sam Rayburn, who moved with his family from Tennessee to Fannin County, Texas, in 1887 and lived here until 1912. Educated in Texas law, he entered the legislature in 1906 and went on to a half-century in the U.S. Congress, becoming the longest-serving Speaker of the House in the nation's history. The modest rural homestead grounded a career that spanned the presidencies of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy.

San Angelo, TX

In 1884, two former employees of the San Angelo Enterprise, J. G. Murphy and W. A. Guthrie, bought a weekly paper and launched the Standard, printing its first four-page edition that May. Its early columns mixed frontier violence with the daily life of soldiers at nearby Fort Concho, a reminder that West Texas was still raw country. Within six months it doubled in size, and by 1905 it had grown into a daily paper that chronicled the rise of San Angelo.

Fort Worth, TX

In 1905, Swedish immigrants drawn to booming Fort Worth organized a Lutheran congregation of the Gustavus Adolphus Synod to worship in their own language and traditions. In 1912 they raised this Lombard Romanesque sanctuary, its tower and arches showing off fine brickwork, and gathered here for nearly half a century before the congregation—by then known as Grace Lutheran—moved on in 1957. The building stands as a relic of a distinct Scandinavian community woven into an otherwise Anglo and German Texas city.

Kermit, TX

This hundred-mile belt of shifting dunes, some rising more than 70 feet, sweeps across Winkler and neighboring counties into New Mexico. Long known to Native peoples who camped and hunted here and to Spanish explorers who crossed it, the sands were mapped by the U.S. government in 1849 for the gold seekers and settlers heading west. Shallow water beneath the dunes nourished willows, cottonwoods, and the plum thickets that fed early travelers, even as the heavy sands formed a natural barrier to their wagons.

Plainview, TX

Operating in the Panhandle since 1886, the Santa Fe Railroad planned around 1900 to push into the rich farmland of the South Plains. Plainview's leaders raised $75,000 to court a connection, and on December 31, 1906, the first train arrived to end the town's isolation. Land agents soon brought trainloads of prospective settlers, and a courthouse, schools, an opera house, and Wayland's new institute rose in the boom that followed.

Malone, TX

Three schools in this Hill County area carried the Savage name, beginning with a one-room school on land donated by George W. Savage in 1885, where classes bent around the rhythms of farm work. A second school in the Walling community later folded its students into the growing original. A third, the Savage Colored School, taught Black children of the area until they transferred to Pelham School in neighboring Navarro County, and the last Savage school closed its doors in 1950.

Orange, TX

Orange County's timber industry began with hand-logging by pioneer settlers in the 1820s, took on its first mechanized sawmill in 1835, and its first steam-driven mill in 1841. Cypress dominated until native pine came into use in the late 1850s, spawning company towns and logging camps whose logs were rafted down the Sabine and Neches rivers. By the early 1900s the industry consolidated and shifted from river transport to railroads, with giants like Lutcher & Moore leading—until the last of the big mills closed in 1931.

Livingston, TX

Built in 1900 by land-and-cotton investor Roy Sawyer for his bride Estella, the Sawyer House is a fine example of the ample frame residences that prosperous small-town Texans raised at the turn of the century. Its wraparound porch, paired pillars, and bays reflect the era's taste. Estella, 'Miss Stella' to her neighbors, had come to Texas with her family from Mississippi.

Corsicana, TX

Built in the 1890s by H. L. Scales, owner of a local cotton gin and cottonseed oil mill, this galleried house passed through a succession of Corsicana's leading citizens, including bank president John Thompson and banker-landowner Joe B. Fortson. Its Victorian and Classical Revival detailing and interior woodwork of walnut, maple, and redwood reflect the prosperity of Navarro County's Gilded Age cotton economy. The Fortson family kept the home until 1976.

Fredericksburg, TX

Built in 1897 of hand-hewn limestone, this Fredericksburg building followed the German settlers' practical custom of home over shop: the Schandua family lived upstairs while John ran his hardware store below, and for a time the Masonic lodge met on the upper floor in trade for help with construction costs. After John's death his brother Henry married his widow, enlarged the building, and carried on the business. Hardware was sold here until 1972.

Cleveland, TX

Burton B. Tarkington brought his family from Indiana to the Texas prairie in the 1820s, and the vast grassland took his name as scattered farming communities took root. Between 1857 and 1957 some fifteen separate schools served the prairie, and the long, contentious drive to consolidate them—marked by court fights, sectional splits, and even a suspicious fire—finally produced a unified district. Because the area had no high school for African American students, they were bussed to Cleveland until integration.

Oxford, OH

This monument displays the seal and motto of Miami University, chartered by the Ohio legislature in 1809 in the frontier town of Oxford. The Latin inscription reads "Seal of Miami University" and "Prodesse Quam Conspici" — "To accomplish rather than to be conspicuous" — a motto that has guided one of the nation's oldest public universities for more than two centuries. Rising in the years after Ohio's statehood, the school became known as a "Mother of Fraternities" and a training ground for generations of teachers, statesmen, and one U.S. president, Benjamin Harrison.

Bloomington, IL

These gates mark the 150th anniversary of a university founded in Bloomington in 1850, when Illinois was still a young prairie state building its first colleges. Standing at the corner of Empire and Park Streets, the sesquicentennial gates tie a modern campus back to its mid-nineteenth-century roots. They celebrate a century and a half of teaching in the heart of central Illinois.

Mullin, TX

Williams Ranch grew up around the 1855 homestead of cattleman John Williams and boomed during the Civil War on trade with Mexico, becoming a stage stop and roundup point on the western cattle trail. By the early 1880s it topped 250 people and boasted the first hotel, newspaper, telegraph, and school in the area — and was even floated as a site for the University of Texas. When the railroad bypassed it in 1885 the town declined, and by 1892 its post office and businesses had closed, leaving only springs and a pioneer cemetery.

Greenville, TX

When Hunt County was organized in 1846, court first convened in the open air under oak trees before a log cabin courthouse rose on the Greenville square in 1847. Over the next eight decades the county cycled through a succession of buildings—frame, then brick—several lost to condemnation or the fire of 1884 that also gutted the surrounding business district. The present courthouse, the seventh, was dedicated in 1929 on the county's 83rd anniversary.

Frisco, TX

In 1838 the young Republic of Texas funded a north-south road to open its northern reaches to trade, and surveyor Col. William G. Cooke laid it along an existing Indian trail running from the Red River toward Austin. The route's northern stretch became the Preston Road, and where it crossed the Trinity, John Neely Bryan founded Dallas in 1841. By the 1850s the whole path was known as the Shawnee Trail, carrying immigrants into Texas and cattle north to market until new trails and the railroads eclipsed it.

Houston, TX

Built in 1922 to help ease a housing shortage in booming Houston, the three-story Sheridan was the project of Robert C. Duff, a prominent Texas railroad man and banker. Its bracketed eaves, tile roof, and arts-and-crafts and prairie-school touches reflected the fashionable apartment styling of the day. It survives as one of the city's few remaining "flats" from the 1920s and 1930s.

Austin, TX

Developer Monroe Martin Shipe built this 1892 residence in Austin's Hyde Park, the suburb he laid out on the old state fairgrounds — using wood salvaged from the fair's grandstand in his own home. Shipe was a civic innovator who pushed changes to the city's government and its public transportation, tying his new streetcar suburb into the growing city.

Leechburg, PA

Founded in 1872 by William Rogers and T.J. Burchfield, the Siberian Iron Works was among the first American mills to make black plate and tin plate, breaking into a market long dominated by imports from England and Wales—and drawing skilled British workers to Leechburg in the process. Its tin went into cookware, cans, and roofing across the country and abroad. In 1874 it became the first mill in the nation to run on natural gas rather than coal, and it operated here until 1931.

Waco, TX

Georgia settler Sterling Sims built this sturdy oak cabin in 1852 after bringing his family and seventeen enslaved people up the Trinity River from Galveston and on by ox-wagon to a 490-acre farm in Freestone County. He and an enslaved carpenter raised it as a permanent home, hewing sills fourteen inches square and eighteen feet long that each weigh more than a ton. Moved to Waco in the 1930s and damaged by fire in 1959, the cabin was later restored.

Italy, TX

The Sims family were among the first pioneers of Ellis County, settling along Chambers Creek in 1851 where Nicholas P. Sims operated a mill and helped lay out the county's early roads. In 1852 Nicholas donated land for a Methodist church and, with his brother-in-law Ezekial Marshall Brack, organized the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge; Brack went on to serve as county judge. Over 150 years the family built ranches, a cotton gin, and — through bequests from Nicholas and his stepson S. M. Dunlap — public libraries in Waxahachie and Italy.

Austin, TX

Born in China in 1860, Joe Sing immigrated to the United States around 1890 to support his family and became one of Austin's first Chinese residents, opening the Hong Lee Laundry with his wife Francis, a Mexican-American woman who lost her U.S. citizenship simply for marrying him. Facing discrimination that shut Chinese men out of ordinary credit, Sing quietly financed loans that helped sustain the city's small Chinese community. His daughter Margaret later became the family's first homeowner on this property.

Wilson County, TX

In the mid-1700s, Franciscan missionaries from San Antonio regularly rode out to a ranch chapel near the settlement of Las Islitas, today's Graytown. The little chapel served a mingled congregation of Canary Islanders and their descendants, Mexicans, Native people, and other settlers scattered across the Cibolo country. It was one of the ranch and outpost chapels through which Spanish colonial faith and community radiated beyond the walls of the great missions.

Arlington, TX

Few places wear their layered past as openly as Texas, where six national flags have flown in turn. From Spain's banner planted beside missionary crosses in 1519, to La Salle's ill-fated French colony, to Mexican rule, the Republic of Texas born at San Jacinto, U.S. statehood, and the Confederacy, each era left its mark on the land. This exhibit distills more than three centuries of conquest, revolution, and settlement into the story of a single state.

Fayetteville, TX

In the mid-1890s, waves of Central European immigrants were reshaping the rolling farmland of Fayette County, and among them was Bohemian settler R. J. Sladek, who raised this trim Victorian cottage around 1896. Within a few years it passed to Anna Hillman, widow of one of Fayetteville's early settlers, who kept house here until 1923. Its 12-foot ceilings, intricate millwork, bracketed porch columns, and fish-scale bay window capture the modest elegance of a Texas prairie town coming into its own.

Clifton Heights, PA · est. 2019

A coiled steel spring that could "walk" down stairs became one of the twentieth century's most beloved toys — and it was made right here. Richard James stumbled onto the idea in 1943, his wife Betty gave it the name Slinky, and James Industries manufactured it in Clifton Heights for decades. When Richard walked away in 1960 and left a nearly bankrupt firm to Betty, she rebuilt it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise, later earning a place in the Toy Industry Hall of Fame.
