League City, TX

Fairview Cemetery began in 1900 with the burial of a five-month-old child on a single plot and grew as more land was deeded to a cemetery association in 1908. Its more than 1,200 graves — marked with concrete, marble, granite, and even cypress wood — hold settlers, dozens of military veterans, and descendants of the Japanese Colony established near Webster in 1903. Community gatherings on Decoration Day, later Memorial Day, wove the burial ground into the life of the growing town.

Hubbard, TX

From unmarked graves to towering marble statuary, Fairview Cemetery mirrors the growth of Hubbard since its first burials in 1881. Its forty-three acres and roughly 7,000 graves gather a diverse, multigenerational community—including Hubbard's first mayor and Russian immigrant benefactor Sam Tobolowsky. Its most famous resident is Tris Speaker, the first Texan elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, alongside veterans of every war from the Civil War through Vietnam.

Midland, TX

In use by the spring of 1885, this ten-acre burial ground was accepted as a gift from the Midland Town Company at the newly organized county's first commissioners' meeting that August. Among the pioneers laid to rest here are veterans of both the Mexican War and the Civil War, men whose lives spanned the mid-century conflicts before they helped settle the West Texas plains.

Brownwood vicinity, TX

Fairview Cemetery has served rural Brown County since 1878, when settlers James Jackson Martin and Daniel Hulse each donated land; Mrs. M. C. Cain was the first person buried here that April. A combination school and church building once stood on the grounds, used by both Baptist and Methodist congregations. Among its more than five hundred graves lie area pioneers and veterans of every American war from the Civil War through Vietnam.

Gainesville, TX

What began in 1854 as the Howeth family's private burying ground — first receiving two of their children after a tornado struck their cabin near Gainesville — grew into one of North Texas's great community cemeteries. Deeded to the county in 1868 and leased to the city a decade later, it set aside ground for freedmen and eventually absorbed an adjoining Jewish cemetery. Among its estimated 18,000 graves lie Civil War veterans, a San Jacinto soldier, victims of the 1918 flu, a centenarian former slave, and a U.S. senator.

Lipscomb, TX

Fairview Cemetery was established in 1924 in Lipscomb, in the far northeastern corner of the Texas Panhandle. Its founding reflects the settlement of this high-plains ranching and farming country, which came comparatively late to permanent Anglo settlement. The cemetery's 2004 designation as a Historic Texas Cemetery honors its place in the community's history.

Bastrop, TX

Laid out with the town of Bastrop between 1830 and 1832, this twelve-acre burial ground overlooking the colony is one of the oldest cemeteries of the Republic of Texas era. Among its graves is Crescentia Augusta Fischer, a German immigrant who caught yellow fever after landing at Galveston and died just five days after reaching Bastrop in 1841. Governors, congressmen, an early African American legislator, and veterans of conflicts reaching back to the War of 1812 all rest here alongside generations of ordinary townspeople.

Pampa, TX

Fairview Cemetery was established in 1904 in Pampa, a young community on the Texas Panhandle plains that grew in the era when railroads and homesteaders were settling the region's open grasslands. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2004, its grounds hold generations of the area's early families. The burial ground remains a tangible link to Pampa's founding decades.

Wills Point, TX

R. H. Reeves donated an acre to the Fairview community in 1875 for church, school, and cemetery use, and a one-room log schoolhouse rose on the site, with the earliest documented burial in 1876. Families dug most of the graves themselves, and the schoolhouse grew room by room — becoming L-shaped, then a three-room building — as cotton farming drew more settlers. When cotton faltered in the 1930s and '40s and families moved away, the school closed in 1945 and later served as a community center until fire destroyed it in 1995.

Mt. Vernon, TX

In 1880 Kentucky-born cattleman Julian N. Kimberlin gave five acres for a Methodist church, school, Grange hall, and burial ground, and the first recorded burial came the next year. A building erected by 1885 served as both school and sanctuary until a 1913 storm destroyed it, after which the community built anew nearby and, in 1928-29, a fresh chapel beside the cemetery. The Fairview Cemetery today holds more than 300 graves, including pioneer settlers and a Civil War veteran.

Nacogdoches, TX

Before the Civil War, a small band of Methodists in the pinewoods of East Texas gathered to found a congregation they called Pine Grove. In the late 1870s they moved their log meetinghouse onto two acres donated by A.J. Muckleroy and renamed it Fairview, beside a burial ground whose earliest marked grave dates to 1851. Generations of families tended the plots by hand, formalizing their care through an annual homecoming and, later, a cemetery association. Today its stone cairns and curbed plots across roughly a dozen acres map the reach of a vanished rural community.

Fairview, TX

In the years just after the Civil War, a Methodist congregation took root in the little community of Fairview in Wilson County, meeting first in a schoolhouse before neighbors W. F. Mitchell and J. F. Prewitt donated a building site. The frontier's weather wrote much of the church's story: a small red-rock meeting house fell to an 1886 tropical storm, its frame successor to a 1942 storm, and each time the members simply built again. The congregation finally merged with the Floresville church in 1955, but families still gather each year for memorial services at Fairview Cemetery.

Salem Township, PA · est. 2017

For much of the 20th century, segregation shut Black families out of America's amusement parks and swimming pools, even where no law required it. In 1945 the Monongahela Valley Sunday School Association bought this Westmoreland County ground to build a park where African Americans could gather freely — the first and only Black-owned amusement park in Pennsylvania. It became a rare place of leisure and dignity, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Burke vicinity, TX

Created in the late 1800s, Fairview Common School District No. 69 opened with a one-room schoolhouse and a five-month term in 1898, serving children across a wide rural stretch of Angelina County. Beyond classes for grades one through seven, the school became the community's heart — a voting place, social hub, and site of county sporting events and farm-improvement programs teaching better methods for raising cattle, peanuts, corn, and cotton. It closed in 1963 when it consolidated with Lufkin.

Fort Worth, TX

William J. Bryce left Scotland for Fort Worth in 1883 and turned a brick-contracting trade into both a fortune and a political career, serving as the city's mayor from 1927 to 1933. In 1893 he commissioned the noted firm Sanguinet & Messer to design this home, one of Texas's few Chateauesque houses, with Richardsonian arches and gabled dormers. Bryce lived at 'Fairview' until his death in 1944.

Fairy, TX

This community was first called Gap, then Martin's Gap after a traveler named Jim Martin was reportedly killed by Indians, before residents chose the name Fairy in 1884 to honor Fairy Fort Phelps, the petite daughter of pioneer settlers. Fairy and her father taught local children in their home, and her family gave land to area churches. The cemetery holds pioneer settlers, dozens of victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic, a Texas Ranger, and veterans reaching from the Civil War through the Korean War.

Dickinson, TX

This congregation descends from two historically African-American Methodist churches on the Galveston County mainland. Warren Chapel began in 1889 with the Rev. Richard H. Warren preaching in Dickinson homes, and its first sanctuary went up in 1901 from lumber that washed ashore after the catastrophic 1900 storm; Winfield Chapel took root at League City around the same time. After more than seventy-five years the two merged in 1967 and soon consecrated a new home as Faith United Methodist Church.

Marlin, TX

Constructed in 1880, this house first served as the Stafford Military Academy, a private boys' school. When financial trouble closed the academy in 1886, Willis Lang Falconer—who had come to Marlin from Mississippi in 1885—bought it as a family home, and the Falconers kept it for more than 80 years. Its formal Doric temple facade still marks it as a landmark.

Falfurrias, TX

Falfurrias was founded in 1904 as a cattle-shipping point by rancher Edward C. Lasater, who took the name from a village on land he had bought in 1893. When the San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad reached the area, Lasater platted the townsite and built its hotel, store, water and power plants, and cotton gin, then opened the region to truck farming, citrus, and dairying — founding South Texas' first creamery. Later oil and gas discoveries added yet another chapter to the boomtown's growth.

Encino, TX

A surviving stretch of roadway here dates to the very first years of organized state road-building in Texas. In 1918, just a year after the Texas Highway Department was created, engineers drew plans for the Brooks County segment of what became U.S. 281 — a soft sand track that gained a caliche surface in 1920 and concrete paving in 1928. The old fragment records the rapid evolution from wagon-era dirt to modern paved highway.

New Hanover Township, PA · est. 2013

In the rolling farmland of colonial Pennsylvania, German immigrants fleeing the religious wars and hardships of the Palatinate built new lives — and new congregations. Falkner Swamp took root here in 1725, when the Rev. John Philip Boehm, the founding figure of German Reformed worship in America, led the community's first Communion. The stone meetinghouse standing since 1790 has watched over generations of the same faithful, making it the oldest continuously active German Reformed congregation in the country.

City of Poughkeepsie, NY

This memorial honors the firefighters of Dutchess County who died in the line of duty — a tradition of civic remembrance that gathers a community to mourn and thank those who gave their lives protecting others. Line-of-duty memorials typically bear the names of the fallen and serve as gathering points for annual services.

Lowell, MI

This memorial in Lowell, Michigan, honors fallen soldiers—the community's war dead remembered in a place of public tribute. Santa Rosa County, FL

This is part of a Missing Man or Fallen Soldier Table, a solemn memorial ritual honoring prisoners of war and those still missing in action. Jefferson, TX

This East Texas home took shape in the antebellum years, its original four rooms and hall expanded by a long ell in 1866 as the household grew. It served as the residence of Eloise Amoss for sixty-two years before passing to the Koontz family in 1961, and was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1965. Its layered additions read like rings in a tree, marking the generations who lived within its walls.

Chambersburg, PA · est. 1948

In the 1730s, waves of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians pushed west of the Susquehanna into the Cumberland Valley, carrying their faith and their meetinghouses with them. Falling Spring's congregation dates to 1734, and the stone sanctuary standing today rose in 1803 as the community matured from frontier outpost into settled town. Presbyterian churches like this one anchored the earliest permanent European settlement of the Pennsylvania backcountry.

Sylacauga, AL

In November 1954, a fragment of a meteorite crashed through a roof in Sylacauga, Alabama, and struck Ann Hodges as she napped — the first well-documented case in history of a person being hit by a rock from space. The 'Hodges Meteorite' became a national sensation, drawing scientists, the press, and even a custody dispute over who owned the celestial visitor. This marker commemorates that extraordinary, one-in-a-billion collision between an ordinary town and the cosmos.

Stewart Township, PA · est. 1994

In 1936, architect Frank Lloyd Wright perched this house directly over a Bear Run waterfall as a weekend retreat for Pittsburgh merchant Edgar J. Kaufmann. Its bold cantilevered terraces seem to float above the falling water, embodying Wright's belief that a building should grow from and belong to its natural setting. In 1963 the Kaufmann family gave Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, opening it to the public.

Stewart Township, PA · est. 2000

With this marker the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission named Fallingwater a Commonwealth Treasure, singling it out for protection and preservation. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the mid-1930s for the Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh, the house famously cantilevers over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Laurel Highlands. It is widely regarded as one of the masterworks of American architecture.

Marlin, TX

Carved from Limestone and Milam counties in 1850, Falls County took its name from the falls of the Brazos River tumbling through its heart. Anglo settlers had arrived before the Texas Revolution, only to flee in 1836 as Santa Anna's army advanced; among those who returned was John Marlin, namesake of the county seat. Farming, dairying, and an early railroad fed steady growth, while Marlin's mineral springs later drew visitors to it as a health resort.

Marlin, TX

Falls County was created in 1850, and its seat at Marlin has seen a remarkable succession of courthouses — a log cabin, a white-cedar building that burned, and several more lost to fire and storm. The present fifth courthouse, begun in 1938 with a Public Works Administration grant, was designed in the Art Moderne style by Dallas architect Arthur E. Thomas. Faced in Austin shellstone with pink granite steps and a soaring central entry tower, it was completed in 1939.

Marlin, TX

The falls of the Brazos, where the river once dropped about ten feet over a rocky ledge, long served Native peoples and settlers as a landmark, meeting point, and campsite. In 1834 colonizer Sterling C. Robertson founded Sarahville de Viesca here, abandoned in 1836; later came Fort Milam and the town of Bucksnort. As the only hard-bottom crossing for 200 miles and the head of steamboat navigation, the falls gave Falls County its name in 1850 before the river shifted course in 1866.

Nash County, NC

Constituted in 1757 as a Particular (Calvinist) Baptist congregation, this church took root in the colonial backcountry along the Tar River, served in its early years by ministers including John Moore and Joshua Lawrence. Over time it became a Primitive Baptist congregation, part of the movement that resisted the missionary and organizational innovations of the 19th century.

Cochise County, AZ

This monument marks a high point along a road across the Arizona desert, built in 1913–14 by convict labor under the state's Board of Control. Arizona had just become a state in 1912, and its young government — led by its first governor, George W. P. Hunt — put prison crews to work carving roads through rugged country to knit the new state together. The roster of officials chiseled into the stone reads like a snapshot of Arizona's fledgling government at work.

Comfort, TX

German immigrant Theodor Georg Ludwig Goldbeck built the original part of this house in 1854, the very year the town of Comfort was founded. Two years later he sold it, along with his mercantile business, to Friedrich August Faltin, a merchant newly arrived from Prussia. Additions made during Faltin's ownership reflect the German pioneer building traditions of the Hill Country, and the home stayed in the Faltin family for well over a century.

Wells, TX

Around 1870 the Texas veteran James H. Bowman offered a hundred acres to the Rev. W. D. Lewis, Sr. to plant a Methodist church at Mt. Hope, and by 1875 the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was organized there. When the railroad created the town of Wells in 1885, the congregation followed, joined by Dr. J. C. Falvey and his wife Matilda. Between 1948 and 1950 their son built a new church here in their honor, and the Falvey Memorial congregation still serves the Mt. Hope and Wells communities.

Albany, TX

During the Civil War, with most able-bodied men away in Confederate service, the scattered families of the Texas frontier faced raids with little military protection. Encouraged by authorities, they "forted up" — crowding into hastily built stockades of dirt-floored log cabins linked by pickets, with a blockhouse for women and children during attacks. The best known nearby was Fort Davis on the Clear Fork of the Brazos, where some 120 people endured the war's last year on little food and long distances from help, yet still managed schooling, weddings, and worship.

Austin, TX

Built in 1877 of bricks made by hand on Barton Creek, this Austin home belonged to Dr. R. K. Smoot, pastor of the First Southern Presbyterian Church from 1876 to 1905. Within its walls the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary was founded in 1881, and in 1889 the writer William Sidney Porter — better known as O. Henry — married Athol Estes here. It stands as a quiet crossroads of Austin's religious, educational, and literary history.

Marion, KY

In the summer of 1890, delegates from across Kentucky gathered to write a new state constitution, the fourth in the commonwealth's history and the one still in force today. Thomas Jefferson Nunn (1846–1917) sat among them as the representative for Crittenden and Livingston counties, part of a western Kentucky family whose name became attached to the bench — hence the marker's title, "Family of Judges." The convention's work, ratified in 1891, reshaped how the state governed itself during the Gilded Age, an era when Kentuckians were wrestling with the power of railroads and corporations and the reach of state authority.

Edna, TX

On July 17, 1835, months before open revolution, settlers from the Lavaca and Navidad river country gathered at William Millican's cotton gin to air their grievances against the Mexican government. With Gonzales founder James Kerr in the chair, the meeting adopted formal resolutions protesting the mistreatment of Texas colonists. It stands among the earliest organized public protests that pointed toward the Texas Declaration of Independence the following March.

Mineral Wells, TX

Edward P. Dismuke arrived in Mineral Wells around 1900, drawn to a town already famous for the healing reputation of its waters. While digging a well for an amusement lake he and a partner built west of town, Dismuke struck a fresh supply of mineral water, and in 1913 he opened the Famous Mineral Water Company to dispense it from a drinking pavilion. His wells are the last in town still open to the public, a survivor of the health-resort era that made Mineral Wells a destination.

Raleigh, NC

From this house, Fannie E. S. Heck emerged as a leading social activist and writer in turn-of-the-century North Carolina. She led the Baptist Woman's Missionary Union after 1892, organizing women for religious and charitable work on a broad scale, and became a benefactor of what is now Meredith College. Her career shows the growing public leadership of women in the era before suffrage.

Bonham, TX

Anglo-American settlers reached this stretch of the Red River by steamboat in 1836, and Fannin County was created the next year, organized in 1838. It honors James W. Fannin, executed with his surrendered command at Goliad in March 1836, one of the darkest episodes of the Texas Revolution. County officials first met at Jacob Black's cabin, and the seat wandered from Warren to Bois d'Arc — renamed Bonham in 1844 for Alamo defender James Butler Bonham.

Bonham, TX

Fannin County's seat of justice began humbly — the commissioners first met at Jacob Black's cabin in early 1836, before the county was even organized. As the seat migrated from Warren to Bois d'Arc (renamed Bonham for an Alamo hero), the courthouse evolved from oak-and-cedar and log structures, one with a jury loft reachable only by an outside ladder, to a stone-and-brick succession. Scottish stonemasons Kane and Cormack built the striking 1888 courthouse of native Gober stone; after a 1929 fire, its remains were incorporated into the Leuders-stone building dedicated by Governor John Connally in 1966.

Goliad, TX

Founded in 1872, Fannin Street United Methodist Church was one of the earliest African American congregations in Goliad County, established after emancipation as freedpeople who had worshiped alongside their enslavers formed churches of their own. The small country church—steeply gabled with a four-sided cupola and a Cincinnati-cast bell—weathered a string of catastrophes, most terribly the 1902 tornado that destroyed the building and killed fifty parishioners. Rebuilt in 1903 and struck again by lightning in 1976, the congregation endured, living out its motto that "the church is not the building; it's the people."

McKinney, TX

Laura Frances "Fanny" Finch taught at McKinney's Collegiate Institute before marrying Henry Finch, a future legislator and mayor, in 1890. In 1917 she became one of the first women in Texas to serve on a school board, and she helped found the city's early literary and garden clubs. A recognized community leader, she was honored when this school was named for her in 1924.

Thornbury Township, PA · est. 1986

Born into slavery, Fanny Jackson Coppin bought her way toward freedom and learning, graduating from Oberlin College in 1865. For more than three decades she led the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, pioneering industrial arts and formal teacher training for Black students. The school she guided endured and grew, becoming today's Cheyney University.

Arnold, PA

Fannie Sellins organized for the United Mine Workers and became a rallying figure for labor in Western Pennsylvania's coal and steel country. On August 26, 1919, on the eve of a nationwide steel strike, she was gunned down in Brackenridge; a miner named Joseph Starzelski was killed the same day. The two lie buried together here in Union Cemetery, where a monument honors them.

Anderson, TX

Henry Fanthorp built this structure in 1834 as a home for his bride, Rachel Kennard, then enlarged it into an inn as travelers multiplied. It housed the region's first mercantile store and, from 1835, its first post office, standing at the crossroads where stage lines from Houston and between Nacogdoches and Austin met. Here Kenneth Lewis Anderson, vice-president of the Republic of Texas, died in July 1845.

Moorhead, MN

This plaque commemorates the flood-control works built along the Red River by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1959–1960, in partnership with the twin cities of Fargo and Moorhead. The Red River of the North is notoriously flood-prone, and its slow, flat, northward course has repeatedly threatened the communities on its banks. The project marked a mid-century investment in taming those recurring floods.

Panhandle, TX

This 1968 dedication honors the townsite founders and cowboys who staked the claims from which Panhandle grew, given in memory by the family of banker and rancher Orville Henry Finch. Set in the ranching country of Carson County, it links the generosity of a local philanthropist to the pioneers who first worked and settled the land.

Rio Grande City, TX

On June 1, 1966, more than 700 melon-harvest workers in Rio Grande City struck for a $1.25 minimum wage and better conditions, organizing under a banner tied to César Chávez's national farm-worker movement. Facing police hostility, they turned a July pilgrimage to the San Juan Shrine into a full march on the state Capitol, where over 10,000 supporters rallied on Labor Day. The strike helped win a state minimum-wage law in 1969 and became a rallying point for the Chicano civil rights movement in Texas.

Loving, TX

In 1877 the Baptist preacher W.H. Farmer brought his family to this land and built the nucleus of a town — a store, a post office, a church, and a cemetery whose first burials date to 1880. Officially platted in 1894, Farmer grew to some 150 residents with businesses, three churches, a Masonic lodge, and a baseball team, holding on through floods and droughts until World War II drew its people away to military service and city work. The families who remained still tend the burial ground that keeps the vanished town's memory.

Cone vicinity, TX

Settlement of the Farmer community began in 1887 on the West Texas plains, and by 1893 residents had organized a school district, funding an early building with gifts from as far away as Amarillo and Colorado City. Churches of many faiths took root here, and the community produced Ima Smith, who grew up in Farmer and became First Lady of Texas as the wife of Governor Preston Smith.

Nocona, TX

Founded in 1905 with $30,000 in capital stock, the Farmers and Merchants National Bank is the oldest financial institution operating continuously in Nocona. Its first president, W.A. McCall, was succeeded on his death by his son Cadmus, who guided the bank for thirty-eight years, and in 1926 the business moved from a corner store to its own building. Through it all the bank remained woven into the civic life of the small Montague County town.

Greenville, TX

When President Franklin Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration in 1936, federal funding let small cooperatives spring up to bring power to the countryside, eventually merging into Farmers Electric. Its first 50 miles of line went live on September 14, 1938, serving 101 customers; within a year more than 800 households had electricity. Even in the depths of the Depression, the hunger for power made the cooperative grow.

Temple vicinity, TX

On February 27, 1901, nine men of Czech descent gathered in the community of Ocker to found the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas — the RVOS — a cooperative that let rural neighbors insure one another against loss when commercial coverage was scarce. Every member pledged to share the burden of a fellow member's misfortune, and for decades officers ran it from their own homes before opening offices in Temple. It grew from a farm-country mutual aid society into an enduring insurance institution.

Chappell Hill, TX

Chappell Hill grew as a Washington County farming town from 1847 but had no bank until an early-1900s boom brought new wealth. Farmers State Bank organized in March 1907 and opened that fall in a fireproof brick building with big storefront transoms, later acquiring the neighboring 1878 W. R. Reinstein Store with its arched doors and stepped parapet. Renamed Chappell Hill Bank in 1986, the institution preserved two handsome examples of small-town Texas commercial architecture.

Georgetown, TX

Growing out of the Merchants and Farmers Bank of 1898, Farmers State Bank incorporated in 1905 and by 1912 had completed this Classical Revival building on Georgetown's commercial square. Its temple-front facade, Corinthian columns, and dentiled pediment expressed the confidence of a small-town bank in the boom years before World War I. Williamson County bought the building in 1967 and used it for county offices for decades.

San Marcos, TX

A group of local farmers bought this San Marcos site in 1908 and, under the leadership of Oscar Calvin Smith, established the Farmers Union Gin Company—the first industrial plant of its size in town. The surviving brick gin house dates to 1911, replacing an earlier structure lost to fire. For more than half a century the gin was a linchpin of the area's cotton economy, running until 1966.
