Trinity Site. Where the world's first nuclear device was exploded on July 16 1945

The Story

In the pre-dawn desert of southern New Mexico on July 16, 1945, scientists of the secret Manhattan Project detonated the first nuclear device, code-named the Gadget. The blast lit the Jornada del Muerto with a light brighter than the sun and left a crater of green glass, proving the physics that would soon be used over Japan. The remote site was chosen for its isolation, and its name, Trinity, was drawn from the poetry of John Donne.

Trinity marks the dawn of the atomic age — the instant humanity gained the power to destroy itself, reshaping warfare, diplomacy, and the shadow of the Cold War for generations.

This label identifies a PGM-11 Redstone, a short-range ballistic missile developed by the U.S. Army's rocket team in the early 1950s and among the first large American guided missiles of the Cold War. Missiles like it were proven on the ranges of southern New Mexico, where White Sands became the proving ground of the atomic and space age. The Redstone lineage led directly to the boosters that lofted America's first satellite and first astronaut.
