Clyde First Methodist Church

Organized in 1884, the Methodist congregation at Clyde met in private homes until their first church building was erected on this site in 1904. The white frame structure was replaced in 1936 by this sanctuary, built of stone donated by church members. Featuring elements of the English Gothic style, the one-story rough-rock sanctuary boasts a steeply-pitched roof, pointed-arch window at the gable end, and a round-arched entry. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1986.

The Story
Organized in 1884, this Methodist congregation met in members' homes until it built its first church here in 1904. In 1936 that white frame building gave way to the present sanctuary, raised from stone donated by the congregation itself. Its steeply pitched roof, pointed-arch gable window, and round-arched entry lend it the flavor of English Gothic design in miniature.

The church shows how a small West Texas congregation literally built its faith from local stone, marking the maturing of frontier settlements into established communities.

Community of Clyde
Clyde, TX
Settlers began arriving here after the Texas and Pacific Railroad reached the area in December 1880, many clustering near the commissary of crew foreman Robert Clyde, whose name the town adopted. A post office opened in 1881, and the schoolhouse doubled as church and courtroom. Boosters once painted Clyde "The California of Texas" on the water tower for its fertile soil, even as tornadoes struck the town in 1895, 1938, and 1950.
Prew House
Clyde, TX
Frank X. Prew left Wisconsin in 1889 seeking opportunity in a 'young country,' farming and working on the railroad before building this Victorian home in Clyde in 1906. Crafted mainly of pine with oak wainscoting, decorative beading, and gingerbread trim on the front gable, the house still stands alongside its old water well and food-storage cellar. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1970.
Old Fort Phantom Hill Corn Road
Clyde, TX
Established in 1851 to move supplies between Austin and the remote outpost of Fort Phantom Hill, this road cut diagonally across the county from northwest to southeast. Though regular troops abandoned the fort in 1854 and the supply line closed with them, the route lived on, traveled by emigrants, soldiers, surveyors, and others pushing into the West Texas frontier.
First Baptist Church of Baird
Baird, TX
Founded in 1881 with nine charter members, this was the first Baptist congregation in the brand-new railroad town of Baird. After a few years meeting in the town schoolhouse, members completed a church building on this site in 1889 and built a parsonage in 1892, and the congregation went on to produce several ministers of its own. It became a lasting fixture of community and mission life in the young West Texas town.
