Organized in 1881 with nine charter members, this was the first Baptist Church founded in the new town of Baird. Elder G. P. Johnson led worship services until the Rev. L. S. Knight was called as the first full-time pastor. After meeting in the town schoolhouse for a few years, a church building was completed at this site in 1889, and the first parsonage was built in 1892. The congregation continued to grow and produced several ministers from its membership. Active in mission work, the church has been a vital part of community life in Baird. (1983)

The Story
Founded in 1881 with nine charter members, this was the first Baptist congregation in the brand-new railroad town of Baird. After a few years meeting in the town schoolhouse, members completed a church building on this site in 1889 and built a parsonage in 1892, and the congregation went on to produce several ministers of its own. It became a lasting fixture of community and mission life in the young West Texas town.
Why it matters
The church shows how faith congregations rooted and stabilized the instant towns that sprang up along the Texas railroads in the settlement era.

Camp Pecan, C.S.A.

Established in 1862, Camp Pecan was one of a chain of posts set a day's horseback ride apart, manned by the Texas Frontier Regiment to guard the state's western line of settlement during the Civil War. With few men and chronic shortages of food, clothing, and horses, its Confederates faced Indian raids from the west and renegades and deserters from the east. Against these odds they managed to hold the frontier, and the State of Texas raised this memorial to them in 1963.

Callahan County was carved from the vast Bexar Territory in 1858, recreated in 1876, and finally organized in 1877. It honors James H. Callahan, a soldier of the Texas Revolution and captain of the Texas Rangers. The county seat migrated from Callahan City to Belle Plain before settling at Baird, a crossroads where early military roads, the Chisholm Trail, and the first government telegraph line all met.
Callahan County Courthouse
Baird, TX
After the Callahan County seat moved from Belle Plain to Baird in 1883, a succession of noted architects left their mark here — F.E. Ruffini on the first courthouse, J. Riely Gordon on a larger 1900 building, and finally Voelcker & Dixon on the Classical Revival courthouse completed in 1929. Adorned with acanthus leaves, rosettes, medallions, and cartouches, the current building was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2003.
First Callahan Jail
Baird, TX
The first Callahan County jail was built in 1878 at Belle Plaine, the original county seat. When a contested election shifted the seat to Baird, that town's citizens paid to have the jail moved there in 1883. Recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark, it survives as a relic of the county-seat rivalries that shaped young West Texas communities.
