The Story
The Blue Star Memorial program began in 1945 as a garden-club tribute to the armed forces, its name borrowed from the blue-star service flags that families displayed for relatives in uniform. What started as a single New Jersey highway of dogwoods grew into a nationwide network of markers tended by state garden clubs. This South Carolina marker, placed with the state highway department, carries that gesture of thanks to passing motorists.
