The Story
Blue Star Memorials date to 1945, when New Jersey garden clubs lined a highway with blue-star dogwoods for World War II service members; the tradition spread nationwide to honor all branches of the armed forces. In Rome, the Mountain View Garden Club of the Laurel District joined the City of Rome and the Garden Club of Georgia to place this marker. The blue star borrows the emblem of the service flags hung in wartime homes.
