The Story
The Blue Star Memorial tradition began in 1945, when garden clubs planted flowering trees along a New Jersey highway to honor World War II troops, then broadened to commemorate all branches of the armed forces. In Moultrie, the Garden Club of Georgia joined the Cherokee and Magnolia Garden Clubs and the state Department of Transportation to raise this marker. The blue star at its center recalls the service flags hung in homes across the country during the war years.
