The Story

In 1889, a Hartford inventor named William Gray patented the coin-operated telephone, solving a problem that had nagged the young Bell system: how to let people without a home telephone pay for a single call. With George A. Long turning the idea into a working machine, the first public pay telephone was installed here in Hartford, and the concept spread to street corners, drugstores, and railway stations across the nation. For more than a century the pay phone would be a fixture of American public life before the cell phone finally retired it.

The coin-operated telephone democratized long-distance communication, putting a private technology within reach of anyone with a nickel and reshaping how ordinary Americans stayed connected for over a hundred years.

In the winter of 1921, radio was still a young and unruly science, and most experts believed the long waves were the only way to reach across oceans—leaving the crowded short waves to amateurs. On December 11 of that year, a small experimental station built by members of the Radio Club of America transmitted from this corner of Greenwich and was heard clear across the Atlantic in Ardrossan, Scotland. The feat proved that short waves, far from being useless, could carry signals immense distances with modest power.

On a ledge outside Farmington, Connecticut, sixty-six names were chipped into the stone by people quarantined here during a smallpox outbreak in the late 1700s. In an age before vaccines, communities isolated the infected in "pest houses" on the outskirts of town, and inoculation was a risky new practice that itself required weeks of seclusion. The patients who waited out their fevers here left their names as the only record that they had passed this way.

William Chambers Shepard Memorial

This granite tribute honors William Chambers Shepard (1883–1958), a Connecticut advocate for the careful stewardship of the state's woodlands during an era when America was waking up to the cost of unchecked logging and land use. His generation embraced the Progressive-era conservation creed of 'wise use' — the idea that forests and natural resources should be managed for the long-term public good rather than exhausted for quick profit. Shepard helped advance that cause in Connecticut, including the founding of an organized council devoted to the state's natural resources.
