Near this spot on December 11, 1921, Radio Station 1BCG sent to Ardrossan, Scotland, the first message ever to span the Atlantic on short waves. 1BCG, an amateur station, was built and operated by members of the Radio Club of America.
The Story
In the winter of 1921, radio was still a young and unruly science, and most experts believed the long waves were the only way to reach across oceans—leaving the crowded short waves to amateurs. On December 11 of that year, a small experimental station built by members of the Radio Club of America transmitted from this corner of Greenwich and was heard clear across the Atlantic in Ardrossan, Scotland. The feat proved that short waves, far from being useless, could carry signals immense distances with modest power.
Why it matters
This backyard experiment overturned the reigning assumptions of early radio and helped open the short-wave spectrum that would soon carry global broadcasting, aviation, and military communications—an American amateur triumph that reshaped how the world talks to itself.

This plaque marks the room in Manhattan's Hotel New Yorker where Nikola Tesla, the visionary Serbian-American inventor, spent his final years and died alone in January 1943. Decades earlier Tesla had helped win the 'War of the Currents,' championing the alternating-current systems that made it practical to transmit electricity across long distances and light entire cities. By the time he died in near-poverty, the AC power grids he pioneered had become the invisible backbone of modern life. First Train Telegraph

On a September day in 1851, superintendent Charles Minot was aboard a stalled New York & Erie train when he did something no railroader had done before: rather than wait blindly for an overdue oncoming train, he walked to the station telegraph and wired ahead to hold it, then ordered his own train forward on the strength of the reply. Until that moment trains ran by fixed timetable and nervous guesswork, and a single misjudgment meant a head-on collision. Minot's telegraphed order turned the humble station on the Erie line into the birthplace of the 'train order' system that would soon govern rail traffic across the continent.
