Wallace United Methodist Church

Settled in the 1840s, Wallace community grew into a rural trading center with a general store and school. This Methodist congregation, organized in 1889 by the Rev. W. D. Wheeler and eight charter members, met first in the schoolhouse. W. H. Bailey, G. J. Loughmiller, George Richards, and W. P. Wallace gave funds for the present church building, erected in 1910, during the pastorate of the Rev. D. S. Burke. Despite a decrease in rural population, this country church maintains its heritage of service to the community. (1976)

The Story
Settled in the 1840s, the Wallace community grew into a rural trading hub with a store and school in Van Zandt County. Its Methodist congregation was organized in 1889 by the Rev. W. D. Wheeler and eight charter members, meeting first in the schoolhouse before local benefactors funded the present sanctuary in 1910. Despite the long decline of the surrounding farm population, the country church has kept up its tradition of service.

High Cemetery
Canton, TX
High Cemetery opened in 1859 with the burial of Nancy Jane Hubbard, six years after the High community took shape in Van Zandt County. More than a hundred of its graves date from the nineteenth century, including that of Samuel A. High, the area's first permanent landowner and the man who donated the ground. Civil War veterans and generations of pioneer families rest here, making the cemetery a roster of the settlers who built the community.
Wesley Chapel Cemetery
Canton, TX
The Watkins community took root in the mid-1800s, and in 1872 the Crosby family deeded land here to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for a church and burial ground — though the first grave was dug two years earlier. Over more than a century the five-acre cemetery filled with some 400 graves, among them pioneer founders, church trustees, and veterans of the Civil War and both World Wars. Its rows also hold more than fifty children and infants, some laid to rest beside mothers lost in childbirth.
Hayden Baptist Church
Myrtle Springs, TX
In October 1878, fourteen charter members led by Dr. George D. Staton gathered to organize a Baptist congregation, first named Myrtle Springs Baptist Church, agreeing to meet once a month as rural fellowships did. They built a church in 1889, worshipped for a time at the Cow Prairie schoolhouse, and in 1904 raised a new sanctuary and took the name Hayden Baptist Church. The pioneer congregation has served this stretch of Van Zandt County ever since.
Blackwell House
Canton, TX
Reputed to be the oldest house in Canton, this residence was built in 1886 for Henry F. Blackwell II — an early merchant who also served as county sheriff — and his wife Nannie Jane, who raised eight children here. Altered and expanded over the decades, it stayed in Blackwell hands until 1975 and was given to the city by the family's descendants in 1988. It survives as a rare link to the town's earliest days.
