St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church has provided for the spiritual needs of residents in this region since the late nineteenth century. Before that time, Catholics in the town of Pilot Point, organized in 1854, had no nearby place of worship. Early area Catholics, many of whom were of German origin, had to travel two days to attend services in Gainesville or Sherman. By the 1890s, the firm of Flusche Brothers and Sullivan recruited a number of German settlers to the town, increasing the need for a Catholic Church. Sixty-three residents and visitors gathered in 1891 for the first Mass given in the town. By 1892, parishioners raised funds to build a structure, and the Diocese of Dallas consecrated St. Thomas Aquinas Church on March 7, the feast day of St. Thomas. The following year, the church opened a school and secured land for a cemetery. In 1904, members built a larger sanctuary. The parish prospered until the economic depression of the 1930s. In 1936, however, the church once again began to grow under the leadership of Father Paul Charcut (1908-1968), who was actively involved in both church and civic affairs in Pilot Point. In the following years, St. Thomas Aquinas Church established significant programs to assist the less fortunate in the area through charitable contributions. Congregation members have also served as civic leaders, while others have entered into religious vocations or participated in the U.S. military during wartime. Today, the church continues in its historic role as a spiritual and community leader for the surrounding area. (2007)

The Story

As the Flusche Brothers firm recruited German settlers in the 1890s, sixty-three worshippers gathered for the town's first Mass in 1891, and a consecrated church followed in 1892. The parish soon opened a school and cemetery and weathered the Great Depression to keep growing.

County Line Baptist Church
Pilot Point, TX
Founded in 1863 as the Colored Missionary Baptist Church, this congregation gave African Americans near the Cooke–Denton county line a spiritual home in the very year of the Emancipation Proclamation. Early worshippers gathered under a brush arbor before raising a chapel in 1874 and settling in Pilot Point by 1882. Over the decades the church expanded its mission well beyond Sunday services, launching adult literacy classes in 1939 and hosting regional conventions.
First Christian Church of Aubrey

The Disciples of Christ in this area first worshipped alongside other denominations under a brush arbor and in a schoolhouse in the Spring Hill community before establishing their own Christian church in Aubrey in October 1894. A frame sanctuary served the congregation until a tornado leveled it in 1918, after which members quickly rebuilt while sustaining their missions and charitable work. An early emphasis on Bible schools fueled rapid growth and set the congregation's long course of worship and outreach.
Aubrey First United Methodist Church
Aubrey, TX
In 1858 Dr. George T. Key moved his family from Missouri to Denton County and built log cabins near present-day Aubrey, one of which served as both school and church — the Key School House that cradled one of the county's first Methodist congregations. After years of meeting in the schoolhouse and members' homes, the church accepted a free town lot in 1885 and completed a frame building in 1886. A 1918 tornado leveled that structure, but the congregation rebuilt in brick by 1919, adorning it with Pre-Raphaelite-style stained glass, and continues to serve Aubrey today.
Green Valley Schools
Aubrey vicinity, TX
Fertile land and timber drew settlers to this corner of Denton County around 1870, to a crossroads community first called Toll Town and later renamed Green Valley by schoolteacher Henry Clay Wilmoth. A subscription school opened in a vacant farmhouse in 1878, and after the district organized in 1884, local carpenters built a one-room schoolhouse—the first of three, culminating in a four-room building in 1919. The school gave rural children academic and athletic opportunities until it closed in 1949, and its last building still serves as a community center.
