Scurry County's Canyon Reef Oil Field

Attracted international attention by size and engineering achievements. During 1948 four widely dispersed wells penetrated the Canyon Reef Formation at depth of 6,500 feet. Soon more than 2,000 wells defined gigantic fields which contained an estimated four billion barrels of oil. This rapid drilling involved thousands of people--contractors, drillers, engineers, geologists, lawyers, office workers, roughnecks, roustabouts, suppliers. Oil companies poured $300,000,000 into the operations. By 1951 engineers saw that only 20% of Canyon Reef oil could be produced in competitive operations, but recovery could be doubled by pressure maintenance in unitization. Successful formation of Diamond "M", Sacroc, Sharon Ridge Canyon, and Cogdell Units and initiation of fluid injection were events of immense significance. The programs showed by 1955 that free American enterprise can work out voluntarily the most modern and efficient conservation procedures. Thus Scurry County--with a petroleum industry dating from shallow wells in 1923--has become a pioneer in oil history, and is assured a high level, stable economy for many future decades. (1967)

The Story

When engineers realized that competitive drilling would recover only a fraction of the oil, operators pioneered voluntary "unitization" and pressure-injection programs that doubled recovery and set new standards in conservation.

Von Roeder Cotton Breeding Farms

Snyder, TX

Beginning in 1923, Clemens Von Roeder used naturally occurring mutations to breed a long-staple, big-boll cotton on this West Texas land, later adding strains resistant to hail, windstorm, and rust. Joined over the decades by his brother Nolan, agricultural executive Bentley Baize, and Nolan's son Max, the family developed marketed seed varieties — Texas Mammoth and Western Prolific for hand-picking, and Western Storm Proof for the new mechanical harvesters.

J. J. Moore No. 1 Oil Well

Snyder, TX

Drilled through most of 1923, the J. J. Moore No. 1 became the first producing oil well in Scurry County and opened up a major West Texas petroleum region. The drillers struck something strange along the way—a pressurized reservoir of 'cold air,' actually nitrogen and helium, that blew mud sixty feet skyward and, once harnessed, powered the rig and even refrigerated the crew's food and water. Still producing after more than 500,000 barrels, the well heralded a field that would eventually see thousands of wells drilled in the county.

T&P No. 1 - W.H. Abrams No. 1 Discovery Well of the Permian Basin

Westbrook, TX

In 1920 the well named for leasing agent W. H. Abrams struck oil, the first commercial discovery in what became the vast Permian Basin. When the well was "shot" with nitroglycerin that July, a crowd of 2,000 watched oil and gas erupt nearly to the top of the derrick. The strike opened one of the greatest oil regions in the United States, later revived through water-flooding to recover tens of millions more barrels.

Postex Cotton Mill

Post, TX

Cereal magnate C. W. Post founded this cotton mill in 1912 to give the people of his planned West Texas town a market for their crop and steady work close to home. Ambitiously, it was designed to carry cotton through every stage under one roof—from ginned fiber all the way to finished goods—a rare feat of vertical integration for its time.
