J. J. Moore No. 1 Oil Well

Snyder, Scurry County, Texas

(1.4 miles south) First producing oil well in Scurry County; opened a major West Texas petroleum area. Drilled February to October 1923 by E. I. (Tommy) Thompson, W. W. Lechner and E. E. (Buddy) Fogelson of Loutex Corp., W. A. Reiter located the well. Leon English was field geologist. Drillers were Jesse Thomas, Begossa Murphy, Tom Mann, Charlie Dodson, Sim Taylor. The tool dresser, James O. Jarmon, was the only man working the well from top to bottom. Pat and Mike Moore, the young sons of the landowner, helped to fire the steam roller. The drill struck a pressurized reservoir of "cold air" (nitrogen and helium) unique in Texas at that time. It blew mud and water 60 feet above the well head. Soon harnessed, it replaced steam to operate the drilling. It also refrigerated food and water. Completed to 3575 feet and plugged back to 1800 feet in the San Andres formation, the J. J. Moore No. 1 has yielded over 500,000 barrels of oil; is still producing. Several "dusters" were drilled nearby in 1924. Exploration was further discouraged in the 20s by low prices; eventually, however, here in the Sharon Ridge Field over 2200 wells have been brought in. In 1948 deep wells began to tap the canyon reef in Scurry; the county now has over 4,000 oil wells. (1966)

The Story

Drilled through most of 1923, the J. J. Moore No. 1 became the first producing oil well in Scurry County and opened up a major West Texas petroleum region. The drillers struck something strange along the way—a pressurized reservoir of 'cold air,' actually nitrogen and helium, that blew mud sixty feet skyward and, once harnessed, powered the rig and even refrigerated the crew's food and water. Still producing after more than 500,000 barrels, the well heralded a field that would eventually see thousands of wells drilled in the county.

Von Roeder Cotton Breeding Farms

Snyder, TX

Beginning in 1923, Clemens Von Roeder used naturally occurring mutations to breed a long-staple, big-boll cotton on this West Texas land, later adding strains resistant to hail, windstorm, and rust. Joined over the decades by his brother Nolan, agricultural executive Bentley Baize, and Nolan's son Max, the family developed marketed seed varieties — Texas Mammoth and Western Prolific for hand-picking, and Western Storm Proof for the new mechanical harvesters.

Scurry County's Canyon Reef Oil Field

Snyder, TX

The 1948 discovery of the Canyon Reef Formation drew international attention as thousands of wells at 6,500 feet defined a field holding an estimated four billion barrels. The boom brought a flood of contractors, geologists, roughnecks, and $300 million in investment to Scurry County. When engineers realized that competitive drilling would recover only a fraction of the oil, operators pioneered voluntary "unitization" and pressure-injection programs that doubled recovery and set new standards in conservation.

T&P No. 1 - W.H. Abrams No. 1 Discovery Well of the Permian Basin

Westbrook, TX

In 1920 the well named for leasing agent W. H. Abrams struck oil, the first commercial discovery in what became the vast Permian Basin. When the well was "shot" with nitroglycerin that July, a crowd of 2,000 watched oil and gas erupt nearly to the top of the derrick. The strike opened one of the greatest oil regions in the United States, later revived through water-flooding to recover tens of millions more barrels.

Postex Cotton Mill

Post, TX

Cereal magnate C. W. Post founded this cotton mill in 1912 to give the people of his planned West Texas town a market for their crop and steady work close to home. Ambitiously, it was designed to carry cotton through every stage under one roof—from ginned fiber all the way to finished goods—a rare feat of vertical integration for its time.
