Pioneer Episcopalians worshiped at the Kerr County Courthouse in 1881. In 1884-88, they erected a small frame Gothic church. The Rev. J. E. Hole served 1890-91 as first resident rector; the Rev. Richard Galbraith, 1894-1908, as first permanent rector. In 1908 Saint Peter's became a parish. The Rev. J. E. Ellis, 1908-13 rector, founded a Boy Scout troop here, before scouting had originated nationally. The present church was built in 1928. Annexes were added later. The greatly enlarged membership includes descendants of early communicants. (1977)

The Story
Episcopalians in the Hill Country first worshiped at the Kerr County Courthouse in 1881 before raising a small frame Gothic church later in the decade. Under a series of rectors the parish took shape, and one of them founded a Boy Scout troop here even before scouting had formally organized nationally. The present church replaced the pioneer chapel in 1928.

Notre Dame Catholic School
Kerrville, TX
When Father Henry Kemper—ordained in 1910 amid expectations of an early death from tuberculosis—learned of Kerrville's growing Catholic congregation, he devoted the rest of his life to it. In 1912 he opened a school with 27 pupils and three Sisters of Charity, charging a dollar a month and nothing to the poor; enrollment tripled within the year. Renamed for Kemper's alma mater, Notre Dame, the school taught home-front skills during World War I, downsized to survive the Depression, and has served the community for more than a century.
Notre Dame Catholic Church

Founded in 1892 as the mission of St. Mary of the Assumption, this Kerrville congregation became a full parish in 1911 and soon added a school under Father Henry Michael Kemper. In 1915 it sponsored Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and School to serve Hispanic Catholics, a companion congregation that merged back into the parish in 1955, and the church took its present name, Notre Dame, when a new building rose in 1935. Over the decades its members extended outreach through jail ministry, a food pantry, and a free medical clinic.
Captain Charles Schreiner
Kerrville, TX
Born in France in 1838, Charles Schreiner emigrated as a boy, rode with the Texas Rangers, and fought for the Confederacy before opening a Kerrville general store in 1869. From that counter he built an empire — banking, ranching, and the marketing of wool and mohair through one of Texas's first such warehouses — until by 1900 he owned some 600,000 acres. A noted philanthropist, he founded the Schreiner Institute that still bears his name.
The Original Building of Tivy School
Kerrville, TX
Captain Joseph A. Tivy, a Canadian-born surveyor who settled in Kerr County around 1870, served as Kerrville's first mayor and a state legislator. In 1890 he donated land and a hundred acres to fund a school on this site, and classes began in 1891. Among its early pupils was Chester W. Nimitz, the future Fleet Admiral of World War II; the native-stone building was damaged by fire in 1942 and housed Tivy High School until 1967.
