Lutheran clergy served people in this area as early as 1886, but this congregation did not officially begin until 1890. The first worship service was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Stern, and Henry Stern deeded land for a church and cemetery. The Rev. Renatus Fiedler served as first pastor, and a church building was dedicated on October 12, 1890. The congregation also operated a day school for a time. Some worship services were conducted in the German language until the 1940s. The original sanctuary was replaced in 1965. (1990)

The Story
Lutheran clergy reached this part of Austin County by 1886, and in 1890 German settlers formally organized Saint Paul, holding their first service in the John Stern home before Henry Stern deeded land for a church and cemetery. The Rev. Renatus Fiedler served as first pastor, and German-language worship continued into the 1940s, a marker of the community's deep immigrant roots.

Rosedale Nursery
Brenham, TX
English immigrant William H. Watson founded Rosedale around 1860 as Texas's first commercial nursery, growing it from three acres in Brenham to some 200 acres by 1897. Specializing in peaches and grapes, Watson issued detailed catalogs, stocked ornamental plants, and in 1874 introduced his own "Rosedale Hybrid" arborvitae. He employed gardeners trained at England's renowned Kew Gardens, and his sons carried the business into the twentieth century.
Meinecke Cemetery
Kenney, TX
Johann Friedrich and Sophie Meinecke, who emigrated from Bremen, Germany, in 1847, established this family burial ground in 1858 after two of their sons drowned in the Brazos River. They had bought land near Kenney from the town's namesake, evangelist John Wesley Kenney, and became noted local farmers, ranchers, and educators. The cemetery's vertical stones, curbing, and German-language inscriptions still record the pioneering family and the wave of German settlers who shaped this stretch of Austin County.
Germania Mutual Aid Association
Brenham, TX
Texas farmers in the 1890s had little protection when fire, lightning, or storms destroyed their crops and buildings. In 1896, merchant L. A. Niebuhr and attorney E. W. Hander gathered 34 members in a Perry, Texas schoolhouse to form the Germania Mutual Aid Association, a cooperative that let farmers insure one another. From those beginnings it grew into a major insurer, adding coverage for hail, explosions, theft, and more as it spread across the state.
Salem Lutheran Church
Brenham, TX
The Rev. Johann G. Ebinger and seventeen charter members organized this congregation in the German Salem community on November 22, 1856, first worshipping in a log cabin on land deeded by Wilhelm Bohne. In 1913 the church moved to its present site. As the second-oldest German Lutheran congregation in Washington County, Salem anchored local life with a cemetery, a school, and a succession of church societies stretching from the 1860s into the twentieth century.
