Rosedale Nursery

Established around 1860 by English immigrant William H. Watson as the state's first commercial nursery, Rosedale grew from three acres in Brenham to 200 acres southeast of the town by 1897. At Rosedale, Watson specialized in peach and grape cultivars. The nursery's 31-page catalog for the 1869-70 season revealed that Watson stocked not only fruit trees and grape vines, but also numerous ornamental plants. In 1874, he produced the "Rosedale Hybrid" arbor vitae. Over the years, Rosedale employed several professional gardeners who trained at England's Royal Botanic Kew Gardens. The Story
English immigrant William H. Watson founded Rosedale around 1860 as Texas's first commercial nursery, growing it from three acres in Brenham to some 200 acres by 1897. Specializing in peaches and grapes, Watson issued detailed catalogs, stocked ornamental plants, and in 1874 introduced his own "Rosedale Hybrid" arborvitae. He employed gardeners trained at England's renowned Kew Gardens, and his sons carried the business into the twentieth century.

Germania Mutual Aid Association

Texas farmers in the 1890s had little protection when fire, lightning, or storms destroyed their crops and buildings. In 1896, merchant L. A. Niebuhr and attorney E. W. Hander gathered 34 members in a Perry, Texas schoolhouse to form the Germania Mutual Aid Association, a cooperative that let farmers insure one another. From those beginnings it grew into a major insurer, adding coverage for hail, explosions, theft, and more as it spread across the state.
Milroy's Garden and Orchard

Born in Liverpool to Scottish parents, Alexander Douglas Milroy immigrated to Houston in 1877 to work in the cotton export trade and, after prospering, settled his family in Brenham in 1893. There he built an English-style country retreat on forty acres, with bridle paths, a carriage house, and an orchard of fruit and nut trees imported from England and tended by an English gardener. Milroy died in 1931, and in the 1950s his orchard gave way to the Walnut Hill Subdivision.
William H. Watson
Brenham, TX
Born in Ireland in 1837, William H. Watson emigrated to America in 1853 and settled in Brenham by 1859, where he and his wife Sarah established the Rosedale Nursery by 1860. From the 1870s he recruited other horticulturists to Texas and won wide attention for his Rosedale arborvitae hybrid. He served as an officer of the state's early horticultural societies, rising to president of the Texas State Horticultural Society in 1889 before his death in 1897.
Schmid Bros. Building
Brenham, TX
Swiss immigrant Josef Schmid opened a Brenham mercantile in 1880 and, joined by his brothers Benjamin and Sigmund, formed Schmid Bros. in 1889. At the turn of the century the brothers raised this handsome Renaissance Revival building — round-arched windows, hood moldings, and multi-bay fronts on both floors — to house their growing enterprise, a fixture of the downtown even after the family sold it in 1934.
