In 1869, Texas was in the middle of Reconstruction. The Civil War had upended the economy and politics of the state, and small towns across Northeast Texas were rebuilding and reorganizing. Trade depended on local merchants who stocked everything from dry goods to medicine.

The town was not even called Mt. Vernon when the business began. The marker notes it was known as Lone Star before taking its present name. In communities like this, one general mercantile store often carried a bit of everything, and a separate drugstore was a sign of a town growing up.

The country drugstore was a vital institution in that era. Doctors were few and far between, and the local druggist was often the most accessible source of medicine and health advice. He mixed remedies, sold patent medicines, and was frequently one of the best-known people in town.

John Griffith Lock Rutherford was a Texas-born young man, about eighteen according to his birth year, when he began in the drug trade in 1869. He started small, handling a modest line of drugs inside the Ruth Pattillo & Co. Mercantile store. In 1877 he opened his own store at the present site.

He carried a name with history behind it. The marker says he was the great-grandson of the American Revolution general for whom a Tennessee county was named, meaning General Griffith Rutherford, a figure of the Revolutionary era in the Carolinas whose name is on Rutherford County, Tennessee. The family's heritage is written right into John's middle name.

Rutherford also served his town as postmaster from 1874 to 1882, the years when Lone Star became Mt. Vernon. The marker says he seems to have kept the post office in his store, and that would have been common practice. It would also have made the drugstore the place where everyone came for their mail as well as their medicine.

The business passed down through the family. His son, Griffith Wright Rutherford, took it over after 1914. When the marker was placed in 1974, the store was in its second century and an heir still held an interest in it.
