Founded in 1729, PGH was the nation's longest operating public health care institution. Originally an almshouse, the hospital moved to this location in 1871. PGH implemented innovative medical care and education under Dr. William Osler, and the work of Florence Nightingale protégée Alice Fisher advanced nursing as a profession. Pioneering methods of cancer diagnosis and radiation therapy were applied. The hospital closed in 1977.

The Story

Founded in 1729 as an almshouse, Philadelphia General Hospital grew into the nation's longest-operating public health care institution, moving to this site in 1871. It became a cradle of American medicine: Dr. William Osler advanced clinical teaching here, and Alice Fisher, a protégée of Florence Nightingale, helped establish nursing as a trained profession. The hospital pioneered methods of cancer diagnosis and radiation therapy before it finally closed its doors in 1977.

Mother Jones (1830-1930)

In July 1903, the Irish-born labor organizer Mary Harris "Mother" Jones launched her famous March of the Mill Children from Philadelphia, leading textile workers and children maimed by factory machinery on a long walk to dramatize the toll of child labor. A fearless presence in the coal, steel, and textile struggles, she made the nation look at the young hands turning its looms. Her march helped push child-labor reform onto the American conscience.

The Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology

Founded in 1892 by Isaac Jones Wistar, this Philadelphia institution became the nation's first independent center devoted to biomedical research, growing out of an older anatomical museum. Within its walls scientists developed important vaccines and bred the albino 'Wistar rat,' a standardized laboratory animal that spread to research labs around the world. It marked a turning point in American science, when discovery moved from lecture halls into dedicated research institutions.

Hilary Koprowski, M.D. (1916 - 2013)

Polish-born Hilary Koprowski fled the turmoil of mid-century Europe and became one of America's most consequential medical scientists. Before arriving in Philadelphia he had developed the first successful live oral polio vaccine, and as director of the Wistar Institute from 1957 to 1991 he built it into a world-leading biomedical research center. Under his leadership the institute produced vaccines for rubella, rabies, and rotavirus and pioneered the use of monoclonal antibodies in fighting cancer.

ENIAC

In 1946, in a lab at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly unveiled ENIAC — a room-filling machine of some 18,000 vacuum tubes originally built to calculate artillery firing tables for the U.S. Army. Programmed by rewiring and setting switches, it could perform thousands of operations per second, dwarfing every mechanical calculator that came before. From this first general-purpose electronic digital computer descended the machines that now sit on every desk and in every pocket.
