East and South (route marked) is located the Odessa Meteor Craters, formed in prehistoric time when a great shower of nickel-iron meteorites collided with the earth. Geologists estimate that the time of the meteor fall was about 20,000 years ago. The shower was composed of many thousands of individual meteorites of various sizes which fell over an area of about 2 square mile. The smaller meteorites, which were by far the most numerous, either came to rest on the earths' surface or at the bottom of shallow impact pits within the soil. there were several very large meteoritic masses in the shower, however, and these struck the earth with such enormous energy that they penetrated deeply into bedrock and shattered with explosive force, thus producing craters in the earth at the places of impact. when freshly formed the craters were funnel-shaped depressions, the largest about 550 feet in diameter and 100 feet in depth. More than 100,000 cubic yards of crushed rock was ejected from this crater by the energy released from the impacting meteoritic mass. Smaller crater in the vicinity of the main crater range from 15 feet 18 feet in depth. In the ages following their formation the craters gradually accumulated sediments deposited by wind and water. The main crater was eventually filled to with 6 feet of the level of the surrounding plain. It now appears as a shallow, nearly circular depression surrounded by a low, rock-buttressed rim. The several smaller associated craters were so completely buried that their existence was not suspected until they were exposed in excavations made by the University of Texas, in the early 1940's. Meteor craters are among the rarest and most interesting of land features. Observations by astrophysicists indicated that meteoritic bodies which strike our earth originate within our Solar System, probably form the steroidal belt located between the planets, Jupiter and Saturn.

The Story
Roughly 20,000 years ago a shower of nickel-iron meteorites slammed into the West Texas plains, the largest gouging a funnel-shaped crater some 550 feet across and 100 feet deep. Over the millennia wind and water filled the depressions until they nearly vanished, and smaller buried craters went undetected until University of Texas excavations exposed them in the early 1940s. Today the main crater survives only as a shallow, rock-rimmed dimple in the earth.
Why it matters
The Odessa craters are among the very few confirmed meteorite impact sites in the United States, a rare window into the violent geology that shapes the planet.

Odessa Telephone Exchange

Odessa's telephone exchange opened around 1897 in the early years of rural Texas telephony, when connecting far-flung ranches meant improvising with whatever ran across the land. Under pioneer rancher A. Quincy Cooper, service reached the countryside by stringing calls along barbed-wire fence lines. In a remarkable coincidence, Cooper's repair work on one such line in 1915 briefly broke into the first transcontinental telephone call between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, and the exchange was folded into Southwestern Bell in 1928.
Odessa Petrochemical Complex

In 1946 four West Texas oilmen founded the Odessa Natural Gasoline Company to capture the natural gas being flared away as waste in the oil fields. That gas proved ideal for making butadiene and styrene—the building blocks of synthetic rubber—and through the 1950s the Odessa Chamber of Commerce helped attract a cluster of plants that grew into what was then the largest petrochemical complex in the world. Firms like Shell, Rexene, and El Paso Products anchored an industry that reshaped the town.
The Cable Tool Rig
Odessa, TX
The cable tool rig, which dropped a heavy bit on a steel cable to pound its way downward, replaced the older spring-pole method and let drillers reach the deep formations of the Southwest. Introduced in Texas in 1866, it brought in the first great wells of the Permian Basin, including reconstruction from rigs used at the legendary Santa Rita No. 1, which blew in near Big Lake in May 1923. Texas pioneered much of the surrounding industry, from the first oil lease to the first pipeline and storage tanks.
El Paso Natural Gas Company's First Compressor Transmission Engine
Odessa, TX
This 800-horsepower Cooper-Bessemer compressor engine went to work in Culberson County in 1931 as the first machine of its kind at El Paso Natural Gas Company's original transmission station. Founded in 1928 by Houston attorney Paul Kayser, the company was among the earliest gas transmitters in the Permian Basin. Over 38 years of service the engine ran more than 152,000 hours and moved over 144 billion cubic feet of gas toward El Paso and the Southwest.
