The Story
Cattleman John Pierce and his Masonic brethren built this two-story hall at Deming's Bridge near the sprawling Pierce Ranch in 1875, sharing the ground floor as a Baptist church and community meeting place. When the town of Blessing was founded around 1903, the building was moved to follow the community. It survives as a rare frame relic of ranch-country civic life in coastal Texas.

Just five years after the town of Blessing was founded, Catholic residents gathered for their first Mass in 1912, celebrated in private homes by traveling priests. Town founder Jonathan Edwards Pierce's Townsite Company donated land in 1914, and the parish of St. Peter's took shape the next year, gaining its first resident priest in 1930. The congregation has since rebuilt twice—including a remodeled army chapel—and become known for feeding seniors and hosting the community's beloved fall festival.
Hotel Blessing

Built in 1906 by prominent developers Jonathan E. Pierce and his son Abel, Hotel Blessing served both as a family home and as lodging for land-seekers pouring into the Texas coastal plain. The town and hotel took their hopeful name from the settlers' gratitude for the railroads and coastal development transforming the region. It stands as a relic of the great early-1900s Gulf Coast land boom.
Old Hawley Cemetery
Matagorda County, TX
Established in the late 1830s as Deming's Bridge Cemetery, this coastal Texas burial ground grew alongside a frontier community anchored by an early Baptist congregation and one of Matagorda County's first post offices. Land donated by the Savage family and later Jonathan E. Pierce shaped the settlement that became Hawley around 1900. Among those buried here are the celebrated cattlemen Jonathan and Abel 'Shang' Pierce, along with dozens of war veterans.
Deming's Bridge Community
Blessing, TX
A wooden bridge built across the Tres Palacios River in 1857 for landowner Edward A. Deming gave rise to a gathering place for the settlers of western Matagorda County, complete with a Baptist church, post office, and Masonic hall. When the railroad drew people to nearby Blessing around the turn of the century, the community's institutions followed and the old crossing faded. Its cemetery endures, holding the graves of famed cattlemen Abel Head "Shanghai" Pierce and his brother Jonathan Edwards Pierce.
