This congregation originated in the community of Wadeville (3 mi. S), where a Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized at the home of Noble Wade (1808-1878) on June 5, 1869. The first church building also served as a school and Masonic Lodge hall. In 1881, when Kerens was founded along the railroad, the congregation purchased this lot and completed a church building in 1883. They shared this facility with the Baptists and the Methodists for several years. Four members of this church have entered full-time Christian ministry.

The Story
This congregation began in 1869 in the home of Noble Wade in the community of Wadeville, where a Cumberland Presbyterian church was organized and its first building doubled as a school and a Masonic lodge hall. When the railroad created Kerens in 1881, the congregation followed, completing a new church in 1883 that it shared for years with Baptists and Methodists. Four of its members went on to full-time Christian ministry.

Trinidad Independent School District
Trinidad, TX
First known as Trinity Switch for its spot on the Trinity River, the town became Trinidad in 1880 and opened its first school—a log hut—in 1888. Through a series of consolidations, new buildings and the arrival of the TP&L power plant in 1925, the district grew into the Trinidad Independent School District, adding a gymnasium in 1952 and a 1954 regional football championship. In 1965 the school board integrated Trinidad's schools across all grades.
Home of Whitney Montgomery, Poet

Whitney Montgomery was born in Navarro County in 1877 and began writing poetry at fifteen, going on to publish more than 500 poems in major magazines and win numerous prizes. After moving to Dallas in 1927 he edited and published the 'Kaleidograph' magazine and press and helped lead the Poetry Society of Texas. His family erected this marker in 1967, incising his poem 'I Own a Home' at its base.
Roane Baptist Church
Corsicana, TX
Roane Baptist Church was organized in 1897 by 26 charter members, who first worshiped monthly in the Roane School building under their first pastor, the Rev. E. T. Jones. In 1901 they built a church of their own on land donated by two local men, and the congregation called its first full-time pastor in 1948. Improved over the years, the church remains an integral part of its community.
St. Paul Industrial Training School
Caney City, TX
In 1926 two young Alabama-born educators—James William Smothers, trained at Hampton and Prairie View, and Alice Wingfield, a Tuskegee graduate—came to Henderson County's self-sufficient St. Paul community to run an industrial training school. They arrived to a single schoolhouse of twelve pupils; children soon came from across Texas, and even after a 1942 tornado leveled the campus the couple rebuilt it in brick. Alongside academics, students learned scientific agriculture, home economics, blacksmithing, sewing, typing, and music before the school closed in the 1980s.
