Harmony Baptist Church and Cemetery

According to oral tradition, the Harmony Baptist Church began in 1864. A church building was constructed by 1875, when Thomas Ragsdale donated land at this site to the church. The building was used also for school classes and Woodmen of the World Lodge meetings. The nearby cemetery is the burial site of some early settlers of Harmony and Karnes County. The oldest marked grave, that of Martha Rabb, dates to 1875. Although the Harmony Baptist Church disbanded in 1974, descendants of early members continue to meet here annually.

The Story
Oral tradition traces the Harmony Baptist Church to 1864, and by 1875 Thomas Ragsdale had donated land here for a church building. That building also hosted school classes and Woodmen of the World lodge meetings, making it a center of community life. The adjoining cemetery holds early settlers of Harmony and Karnes County, its oldest marked grave dating to 1875, and descendants still gather annually though the church disbanded in 1974.

Old Helena Courthouse
Helena, TX
When Karnes County organized in 1854, a simple frame courthouse rose in the middle of Jefferson Square in the frontier town of Helena. After storm and fire destroyed that first building in the Civil War years, a sturdier rock courthouse replaced it in 1873. The county seat moved on to Karnes City in 1894, but the old stone hall found a second life as a schoolhouse until 1945.

First Store in Panna Maria

Built in 1855, this stone storeroom stood at the heart of Panna Maria, the oldest permanent Polish settlement in America, founded the year before by immigrants from Upper Silesia. It held the landlord's share of the colony's crops, and its Catholic owner John Twohig set aside a room to serve as both church and school for the young community. The Snoga family has kept the building since 1918.
St. Ann's Catholic Church
Kosciusko, TX
In 1880 some sixty Silesian Polish families bought land in this quiet corner of Wilson County and named their community Kosciuszko for the Polish-born hero of the American Revolution. They opened a one-room Catholic school, St. Ann's, in 1892 and raised a large wooden church of the same name in 1898, one of the biggest in the county. Through choirs, societies, and a growing parish, St. Ann's became the enduring heart of a Polish community that still keeps its ancestors' traditions.
